| Cool, I'm not the only one who thinks of "Titanic" when I hear this song! The song came out in 1989 or so, but I heard it for the first time right around when "Titanic" came out. I always equated the lyrics to the story, b/c the lyrics make me think of someone who is lost at sea at night and trying to find home and the one they love. I wish that they had used this song somewhere in the movie -like right before Rose decides to kill herself or after Jack dies, or at the end where Old Rose is dropping the necklace and dreaming of Jack. | |

Wow! I would have never thought to interpret this song as one about 2 people who are so in love and have been in love for so long -that they no longer have to say it, and still see eachother as the children they were when they fell in love. I always took it as a typically sad Cure song, and viewed it as a couple that grew apart, and that when that happens -silence can be the most deafening and devastating sound. -I guess the song could go either way! I do have a new (happier) appreciation for the song though! |

This song totally rocks! It was featured in BATMAN RETURNS, and it plays when Selena Kyle (Catwoman) is dancing with Bruce Wayne (Batman) are dancing at a party. By a mere slip of the tongue - on each person's part, they reveal to eachother that they are Batman and Catwoman. I think it's a song about a person who leads a double life and finds that it interferes with their romantic affairs. |

| I made the mistake of singing this song on the night of September 11th, 2001, at a karaoke club! I started getting teary, at the lyric "In the end, only kindness matters," I started getting teary. -By the time I had finished the song, nearly everybody in the club was crying (unless they were drunk). Now, everytime, I hear it I think of 9/11, and the old saying 'All gave some, and some gave all,' and how so how so many lives were lost, trying to save others' lives, -which is, by far, the biggest, greatest, act of kindness in the universe. I agree with madchester...the original ROCKS, and the No Doubt version is crappy! I don't know how much truth there is to this, but I heard they wrote the song b/c they were Pro-Animal Rights, and it was meant to be from a pet's point of view toward their owner. Silly as that may sound, it kind of makes sense to me, b/c pets love their owners unconditionally, and all they expect in return is that same unconditional love. I also heard that the band donated a large portion of the earnings from this song to several humane societies. If I remember correctly, they let the humane society use this song in a commercial, back in the 80's. Like I said, -I don't know how much truth there is to that, and I'm sure that anybody who reads this will think I'm a lunatic, but I can see where it makes sense. |

I don't know what this song meant in the 70's, when it was written, but ever since 9/11, the lyrics really hit home! "In a New York minute, everything can change" "In these days, when darkness falls early, people rush home, to the ones they love" "One day they're here, next day, they're gone" "I know there's somebody somewhere can make these dark clouds disappear, but until that day, I have to believe, I believe" -I never really thought about until one day, my local rock station was playing this song with quotes from the president (saying stuff like, "We will prevail" and that kind of thing) and Rudy Giuliani. It was pretty wild, and I hadn't thought about the lyrics in that sense. Now, everytime I hear it, 9/11 is all I can think about. |

this song actually reminds me of my boyfriend's psycho ex girlfriend and her feelings toward me! after they broke up, she started encouraging him to hang out with me, even though she had only met me twice! -but after he and i started getting serious, she then became very hostile toward us and was accusing me of ruining the relationship even though they broke up before he and i had met! the point is, i have moved into his house, and i have become very good friends with his friends and the people in his neighbourhood, and i come see her projecting these lyrics: "Flaunt all she's got in your old neighborhood, I'm sure she'll make a few friends. " toward me, with her sarcasm. this lyric: "Lover, brother, bogenvilla, my vine twists around your need." makes me think of the way she got clingy with him in attemps to keep him in her life, and "I can be cruel" just describes her perfectly. if i didn't know who tori amos was, i would swear that this girl wrote this song for herself, and was leading a double life as a professional musician! the scary thing is, her name is Torrie! |
