The Wrens – Miss Me Lyrics 15 years ago
I think they took the very best parts of this when they made "Boys, You Won't." When you hear it again on the Meadowlands, it gives you a warm familiar feeling, but it is a more mature song.

Halo Benders – Your Asterisk Lyrics 15 years ago
I hear "bulldoze our way to a brand new peace accord"

The Weakerthans – The Reasons Lyrics 16 years ago
The Weakerthans are probably the single best band to rewrite as prose, but i would have loved to see this as a bulleted list.

The Rolling Stones – Connection Lyrics 16 years ago
This song always jarred me (in a good way), and finally I realized it was because the song starts in the middle of the chorus.

Built to Spill – Twin Falls Lyrics 16 years ago
As good as "Unless of course she peeked" is, I always cringe a little at "or maybe it was three." That one just seems to serve the rhyme.

Built to Spill – Fling Lyrics 16 years ago
Honestly, calling it a double entendre is *generous*.

Tupac Shakur – How Do U Want It Lyrics 17 years ago
No, the best line is "baby, just alleviate your clothes"

submissions
The Wrens – Surprise, Honeycomb Lyrics 17 years ago
"It protects me from you" is at the heart of the song. Marie knows who she's dealing with, but she comes back anyway, with a talisman for protection.

Halo Benders – Love Travels Faster Lyrics 17 years ago
It's "no more abuses to endure but plenty meted out":

meted out - given out in portions

The Magnetic Fields – The Village In The Morning Lyrics 17 years ago
"telephone my drummer and have her get your things" is a wonderful little autobiographical detail that makes the song more powerful somehow.

The Magnetic Fields – Two Characters In Search Of A Country Song Lyrics 17 years ago
"at a hundred per" is such a beautiful contraction.

The Magnetic Fields – The Desperate Things You Made Me Do Lyrics 17 years ago
"Time provides the rope but love will tie the slipknot and I will be the chair you kick away" is one of the best lyrics in the history of music.

The Magnetic Fields – Papa Was A Rodeo Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one where Stephin Merritt has actually said that it's about a girl named Mike. Love "home was anywhere with diesel gas"

The Magnetic Fields – Long Vermont Roads Lyrics 17 years ago
Mesa Verde / Kansas City verse may be my favorite verse of any song, ever. It's only a shame you have to explain the Missouri/Misery pun if you write it out.

The Magnetic Fields – I Thought You Were My Boyfriend Lyrics 17 years ago
This song wins the award for best use of subtraction in music.

submissions
The Magnetic Fields – Fear Of Trains Lyrics 17 years ago
I feel like the idea that "the straw that broke the camel's back was you" goes unexplored in the song. What did I do to her?

Also: I am a big fan of the phrasing in "her momma shrieks about the lord."

The Magnetic Fields – Epitaph For My Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
My favorite part of this song is the allusion to the songs he writes as "heart droppings."

The Magnetic Fields – Deep Sea Diving Suit Lyrics 17 years ago
Being "stuck" in a deep sea diving suit is being mired down by your past relationships. You wear the suit to survive the ocean, it is the protection you need to survive in a harsh environment. If you suddenly find yourself in an inviting environment, however, the suit becomes a hindrance, bulky and heavy, and it slows you down. Similarly, the emotional barriers you build to protect yourself from one bad relationship may hinder you when a good relationship comes along.

Beautiful that he doesn't beat you over the head with other ocean metaphors, though.

The Magnetic Fields – All You Ever Do Is Walk Away Lyrics 17 years ago
Both the image of birds and bruises and the pounds of flesh (which suggest ruthless collection of an obligation or debt) hint at a pretty unhealthy relationship, and yet the chorus tries to suggest a really good life being abandoned. Maybe a song about people who don't know how much they hurt each other.

The Magnetic Fields – All The Umbrellas In London Lyrics 17 years ago
The afterthought: "I guess I've got no sense at all" is what makes the song for me. It's a small admission of responsibility for his own pain, whether the responsibility is his or not.

submissions
The Magnetic Fields – All My Little Words Lyrics 17 years ago
I feel like the most important line in the song is "it is your wings that make you beautiful." It isn't just that it can't work out, it can't work out for the very reasons he is in love.

Magnolia Electric Co. – The Dark Don't Hide It Lyrics 17 years ago
The first verse sets the song up, but the last three are what really kill me about this song. Especially "I had a job to do but people like you have been doing it for me to one another--at least I don't hide it."

The Mountain Goats – Born Ready Lyrics 17 years ago
It's not clear where the voice in this song is coming to San Jose from, but it's probably as far south as Los Angeles. The formulation "the 101" is a southern california-ism. In San Jose and its environs, it would simply be "headed up 101".

The Wrens – She Sends Kisses Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with Snevik 100%, the hyphenated lyrics stand out as some of my favorites in the two songs. "Charles, hold-me-downs" astounded me when I finally figured out that those were the words.

Kleenex Girl Wonder – I'm Pregnant Lyrics 17 years ago
I believe it's "cuirass," meaning breastplate, not "queer ass." So it should be something like "run right through my scarred cuirass and shatter my heart of glass"

submissions
The Wrens – Ex-Girl Collection Lyrics 19 years ago
I wish I understood what the "Banner hanging from the eaves / marking the eve of election" meant.
