Totally! Most of Gary Numan's song are about man's relationship to machines.

emjay946 is 100% spot on. The album this song is from("Replicas") is very much a concept album inspired by Phillip Dick's "Do androids dream of electric sheep?"
Gary Numan is THE quintessential cyberpunk rocker.

Oingo Boingo – Only A Lad Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is very much about society rewarding bad behavior. A guy who not only misbehaves as a child, but goes on to lead a life of crime and garners sympathy from other people and even admiration for being a "bad boy". Yes Elfman's lyrics were satirical and full of sarcasm, and in this case I think he's satirizing liberals for their belief that showing empathy will persuade people from doing bad things.

Oingo Boingo – Only A Lad Lyrics 11 years ago
I disagree. There is plenty of sarcasm and satire in this song but I think he is trying to make a point.

WTF would a straight man be doing at the beach wearing a speedo trying to tan his cheeks? Animal print pants??

This song is hella gay.

Tears for Fears – The Working Hour Lyrics 11 years ago
Might I add: "Songs from the big chair" is very much a critique of the modern life in the western world and its negative impact on individual people.

Tears for Fears – The Working Hour Lyrics 11 years ago
I see this song as a lament of capitalism and particularly supply side economics. You work to eat, you eat to live, you live to work. The cycle is complete. When Roland sings "we are paid by those who learn by our mistakes", he is making a metaphor for how employers use their employees sacrifice for their own benefit. They have other people making mistakes so they can learn from them: They reap the rewards but assume none of the risks and the consequences.

Depeche Mode – Two Minute Warning Lyrics 11 years ago
The song title comes from the "doomsday clock" created by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists where midnight represents the outbreak of an actual nuclear war. So when Gahan sings "2 minute warning! 2 minutes later when time has come...my days are numbered" he is talking about the anticipation of an impending nuclear attack.

submissions
Landscape – Einstein A Go-Go Lyrics 11 years ago
I think that this song is clearly about nuclear war. Given that E=Mc^2 has implications in nuclear physics which led to the development of the atomic bomb.

Landscape – Einstein A Go-Go Lyrics 11 years ago
IDK why maxilyrics can violate these alleged "copyright restrictions" and songmeanings dot net cannot, but here they are:

You better watch out you better beware
Albert said that E equals M C squared

Einstein A Go Go x3

Bible says we must pay
I am the judge for the judgement day
There'll be no warning no alarm
I'll be the one who's saved

Einstein A Go Go x3

I've got facts I know the truth
You're all corrupt you're all depraved
A few devices around the place
I'll blow you all away

"God does not play dice with the world"
But things aren't right in the outside world
But still there's vice in the world
I'll put things right

Einstein A Go Go x2

You better watch out you better beware
Einstein A Go Go
Albert said that E equals M C squared

Einstein A Go Go

You better watch out you better beware x7
Einstein A Go Go
Albert said that E equals M C squared
Einstein A Go Go

U2 – New Year's Day Lyrics 11 years ago
Happy 30th anniversary, "new years day" !

Pretty sure this song is not about the end of the world; it's more about failed doomsday prophecies. I remember listening to this song on New Years Day in 2000 and it was just too appropriate. New Years Day can be kind of a let down after the excitement of NYE when you wake up and realize that nothing really has actually changed despite it being a new year.

The Church – Disenchanted Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm surprised that nobody has commented on this song so far. Although it's little known, it's truly one of their best songs. In fact, this quote really encapsulates its meaning: ""People spend a lifetime searching for happiness, looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within.""

The protagonist in this song is a rich rock star who thought that money, fame, and admiration would bring him fulfillment in life...And yet he's still unhappy. But the truth is that happiness is not something that you can get from outside of yourself, not even through personal success.....It has to come from YOU.

submissions
Iron Maiden – Infinite Dreams Lyrics 11 years ago
But he makes no direct allusion to God as *he* is understood by religion. In fact, the protagonist describes how up until recently he has been a skeptic and a materialist but can no longer ignore his curiosity about what lies beyond perception and the fate of this world........More like the fate of the entire Universe. He formerly rejected the Supernatural due to fear of the unknown but these nightmares are transforming fear into curiosity.

The Church – Dome Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is an allegory about the human condition and how history repeats itself. But the message of this song is that while people develop cultures and build civilization, they have this innate hubris that causes them to believe their ways are superior and they need not respect the ways of others and believe they'll be around forever.....Only to be blown into dust by the wind of sudden change.

Donna Summer – She Works Hard For The Money Lyrics 11 years ago
@velvetmau: You're also wrong. The 9AM reference precludes stripping since exotic dancers work in evening(and into the night). Furthermore, stripping PAY$ A LOT. It's kinda obvious that the protagonist in this song is working a minimum wage job were the patrons take her for granted but what motivates her to keep going is that she has 2 kids to support who need her and think she's the greatest.

This song is about working mothers and celebrating the sacrifices they make for their families. It's also trying to send a message to rich people with a lot of leisure time to show some sympathy and respect for minimum wage workers.

Donna Summer – She Works Hard For The Money Lyrics 11 years ago
You clearly don't know what the fuck you're talking about, "courtneeh". This song is based on a true story about a working mother named Onetta Johnson who worked 2 minimum wage jobs, one of them as a bathroom attendant at Chasen's in LA. Besides, hookers don't usually have a strict schedule and usually work @ night. Please inform yourself before you post here. Kthnxbai~

Pet Shop Boys – West End Girls Lyrics 11 years ago
There certainly is an element of wealth and social class to this song, but the fact that the Pet Shop Boys are from London means nothing when it comes to this song. It is NOT about London! It is about BERLIN during the cold war. The line "from lake Geneva to the Finland station" gives away the songs meaning: That's the train rout that Lenin took when he was smuggled back into Russia by German socialists during WW1. It's about how East Berlin was poor and repressed whereas West Berlin was affluent and liberated. But I do think there is an element of truth to JimmyCarlBlack's statement about love between 2 people from different worlds, an east German man and a west German woman who both live in Berlin on opposite sides of the Berlin Wall.

Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours Lyrics 12 years ago
I just wanna say to all of you who are pontificating about Depeche Mode's view of religion and Martin's religious beliefs: This song was written and recorded when Alan Wilder was a member of the band. Although he had just joined 2 years earlier, his influence on their musical style AND on the content of their lyrics was profound on Some Great Reward(which this song was the final track on). Even though Martin Gore is credited with writing this song, there is no doubt that Alan had something to do with the inspiration for it as Alan Wilder has been very open about the fact that he is a fervent Atheist and has always been extremely scornful or organized religion. Since his departure from Depeche Mode, the bands lyrics have become even more spiritual and overtly religious in the sense of mentioning God directly. One could argue that the spirituality found on SOFAB is what drove Alan to departure.

Oingo Boingo – Capitalism Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is a reality check and a slap in the face to ALL those pretentious, rich urban white liberals who promulgate socialism and liberal ideals in order to make people think that they're a "good person" and advance their social status. I actually think this song is FAR more relevant to the politically correct 1990s defined by the dot.com boom(which MANY of those PC liberal hypocrite grunge meisters took part in) and limousine liberals. All you lib-ass hiptards who hailed Obama as the messiah back in 2008 thinking he could solve all the worlds problems could also learn a thing or two from this song if you're so inclined.

Dead Kennedys – Nazi Punks Fuck Off Lyrics 12 years ago
Songs like this are the main reason why I dispise amurcapunk like the dead kennedy's. The lyrics are just so fucking bratty, pretentious, and cliche' it's not even funny. They claim to hate nazis and racism because they're trying to politically correct libtarded hip white kids who honestly have no concern for anyone else besides their own little pathetic subculture. If you TRULY think for yourself, you have no need to join a subculture and imitate other clueless teenagers desperate to fit in while pretending that you're "different".

Robert Palmer – I Didn't Mean To Turn You On Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is a cover of a song made 2 years earlier by R&B singer Cherelle. I remember hearing this song and thinking that it's coming from a female point of view despite being sung by a man....And I was right. Anyway, Palmers cover is way better than the original version.

The Offspring – Self Esteem Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is dedicated to all of you "Nice Guys" out there in this world. You know who are: The kind of guys that women refer to as a "doormat".The kind who basically kiss ass to women(NOT literally though! lol)in the hope of getting a 'sympathy fuck'. The kind of guys who put up with being treated like a dog just to get access to a vagina and then whine about how "Im such a nice guy" after getting dumped for a guy with balls and self-esteem and then proclaim that "women only like assholes".

And BigE254: Why are you sympathizing with these losers? If you don't respect yourself, then NOBODY will respect you. End of story.

Metallica – Disposable Heroes Lyrics 13 years ago
Alright, I just have to say that I do NOT think that this song is lamenting war nor is it referring to war in general...........It is SPECIFICALLY about the Vietnam War through the eyes of shell shocked soldier who was drafted against his will and conditioned his whole life to be a solider even though he never wanted this to be his life.

TLC – No Scrubs Lyrics 14 years ago
Conceited? Vain? Absolutely! But moreover its incredibly vulgar, trashy and tacky but that's to be expected of modern hip-hop/R&B. I'm pretty sick of the gawdy flaunting of wealth by hip-hop artists for the last decade. WTF ever happened to dark, gritty, gansta rap? I remember when rap was RAW and about Real Life. Now its just about sex, money, and booze. I will admit that video is pretty cool, though. Its OBVIOUS that chicks won't put up with guys freeloading off 'em but such chicks have every intention of freeloading off of guys! And FTR, idntfcklosers==FAKE ASS HO.

Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels Lyrics 14 years ago
Ive always liked this song a great deal. Pardon me if Im wrong but I never thought of it as having to do with love or relationships. To me, its about a man feeling frustrated with his professional life and the modern world. The last section of the song makes me think of a man running amok...."its hard to be a man when there's a gun in your hand".

Def Leppard – Love Bites Lyrics 14 years ago
I honestly think that song is really about Mistrust in a relationship. He loves this girl but he realizes that she isnt exclusive to him and it makes him feel like he's not so special. "I don't wanna touch you too much baby, 'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy" He's saying he doesnt want to get too involved for fear of becoming attached to someone who is unfaithful."So I don't wanna be there when you decide to break it" .....He knows he is going to get hurt in the end and so he is setting limits on how close they will get.

The Offspring – Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this songs message can best be summarized by the witty 1-liner: "You think you're so cool but you're nothing but a fool".The Offspring totally stick it to all those white gangsta wannabe ass clowns trying hard to be something they're not because they think it makes them look cool and authentic.

Duran Duran – Lonely In Your Nightmare Lyrics 15 years ago
Ya know, this is a rather DARK song. Which is unusual for Duran Duran and particularly for the album "Rio".
I suspect that this song has to do with war and the military, like when he talks about soliders coming home and "homing angel"s.

Yes – Owner Of A Lonely Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the bottom line of this song is: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained". Its a message to those who have

get out there and give it another shot.Basically, never give up, even if you dont succeed right away.

Depeche Mode – Walking In My Shoes Lyrics 15 years ago
To say that I can relate to this song would be an understatement. It is the story of my life. I see this song
as telling the story of what its like to be an outcast and to have faced unjustified persecution for who you
are. Telling the listener: "before you judge my actions, try to imagine what YOU would do if you were treated
the way I was".

Katy Perry – I Kissed a Girl Lyrics 15 years ago
I honestly think this was katy perry's attempt to be scandalous and get attention. But furthermore this song really seems to be intended to titilate guys and make girls think that schmoozing with other girls is the way to get guys turned on. She's totally commercial so beyond that there's pretty much no substance to this poptune.

I TOO am a Diehard DM fan jotenko. Just exactly HOW do you know that your intepretation is correct?
Got any evidence to back this up? Its about how romantic relationship changes over time but some things are still the same. Like his feelings for the subject he speaks to in this song. "the sun and the rainfall" is very much a metaphor for the changing of seasons.

Serenity, I agree with your intepretation 100%. I would to add that this song reminds of one of Ghandi's most famous and oft-said quotes: "You must be the Change you wish to see in the World".I have No doubt that that statement was part of the

Portishead – Wandering Star Lyrics 16 years ago
You people have got it ALL wrong-especially YOU Ravendaymon. The Earth AND the Heavens will ultimately be cast into the dark abyss! This song,
perhaps unknowingly, fortells the fate of the Universe. Cosmologists have determined that in fact the Universe will die a "heat death". It will continue to expand and eventually all the stars will burn out, and galaxies will collapse into black holes. As space expands matter and energy will become more dispersed, dropping the temperture of space down to absolute zero and plunging the universe into eternal darkness.
