You seem to have a pretty intricate understanding of the Bible to not be a Christian. Well said.

I don't see how it can be a generalization. The word numinous is often used by C.S. Lewis, admittedly one of Dustin's great influences. It's a word that "describes the power or presence of a divinity." (Wikipedia definition).

@jcanfield There's no reference in scripture to this exact metaphor of being pulled out of the water, but basically Romans as a whole alludes to this. The basic idea being that we were given the law and told to keep it, but we couldn't and we sinned against God in doing so. Therefore we were "sinking" with this heavy book because we couldn't satisfy its demands. Then Christ comes in and keeps the law perfectly and lives a perfect life, satisfying the demands of the law, something that we couldn't do on our own. We were cursed, but through his death, the curse was lifted ("and the lifting of a curse from my heart")...

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or genuine. But, yes, that's precisely what I believe it means.

I think it's "wading waist deep, I saw a book there in the river", not "waiting..." but it's no big deal.

I think the book referenced in the song is the book of Law in the bible. The more he tries to keep the law by himself, he sinks deeper in the water, until finally Christ pulls him up and saves him by perfectly keeping the law, something that he (the speaker) couldn't do by himself: "someone took that heavy book from my hands/all its weight they set aside/after they had satisfied its demands"

I think most of it seems right, but those first couple lines I'm pretty positive are,

"Our lives spell tin cans and string, but the cornerstone laid is a wondrous and beautiful thing, sure in the ground."

If he wants to take a shot at Chiodos or whoever their singer is, he can. The lyrics Cody writes are immensly better than anything I've ever read from Chiodos.

Totally agree. The last verse really says it all. While still betrayed, Christ pulled us up out of the water, laid us on the beam he clung to, and sank under the waves.

Thrice – Talking Through Glass Lyrics 10 years ago
I agree with the phil dude. I think it might be about doubts that he has concerning his faith and following an invisible God. Example: "It feels like I'm trying to catch the wind". All followers of Christ have doubts, and he's having trouble at times believing in God. He's frustrated in the end, saying that one one hand, he'll never find anything like God, but he's thinking about giving up and asking "what else can I do?" I can really relate to this, personally.

The relationship with a girl theory doesn't make sense to me given the lines about chasing the wind and banishing myths/ghosts in your place. But that's just me. Plus as far as I know he's happily married.

I think this song takes "Made Too Pretty" further. Made Too Pretty says "If we are the Body (the body of Christ), how'd a pretty man get so ugly", meaning the Body is made up of all different kinds of sinners with struggles and such.

And in this song, I think he focuses on his struggle with lust, constantly saying "SHE won't stay dead, stay down", and he references Made Too Pretty saying "It's getting pretty old keeping it pretty", meaning it gets harder and harder struggling with lust and keeping the Body of Christ pretty.

That's my two cents.

Title is from Dumb and Dumber. Harry drove an 84' Sheepdog. Has nothing to do with the song, unless I'm not looking deep enough.

Now that my attention has been drawn to it (above comment), I'm pretty sure where it says

"Where inside he moves from room to room,
but sometimes he climbs our spines,
to remind our grieving hearts,
that in this way he hasn't left"

"hearts", should be changed to "HEADS", because in the paragraph above this one it says "a ghost has taken his place in our hearts". Therefore he wouldnt "climb our spine" to the HEART, where he already resides.

Anyway, short and sweet: change "hearts" to "heads" right there.

I agree with sabio for the meaning, it's from Air's perspective.

But as for the song itself, for whatever reason I'm drawn to it. I think it's one of the greatest songs I've ever heard, and I'm not exaggerating. Musically, Lyrically, Spiritually, and any other aspect, it's incredible, to me at least.

I'm not sure of the rest of the song, but I think in the chorus he must be comparing God to the ocean...because it gives and takes away.

sabio, your second to last paragraph regarding people arguing about Thrice's lyrics and faith was brilliant. "Amen" is all I can say to that.

Oh, and your interpretation of the song was spot-on too.

I'm all about the biblical references...but look at what Mortisfacio3 said in the first post...and then read the lyrics. It all makes sense after reading what he said is on the website, and its freaking brilliant. Wow.

Oh, and Cody told me he was a believer, exitrequired, but either way Hell is a very haunting and touchy subject. So whether or not someone is a believer it makes people think of Heaven and Hell when someone commits suicide.

Timothy used to play keyboards in Jonezetta. Cody from ACB and Ty from Jonezetta told me he committed suicide. So that should explain some things.

It's actually:

"between the river and the ravens i'm fed
between oblivion and the blazes i'm led"

I got the CD today and looked at the lyrics, which are all incredible...

And yeah i think its a reference to Luke 24(?)

I'd love some input on figuring this out, but i think it has something to do with Jesus talking to the Samaritan woman by the well in John.

Scogin didn't produce the whole album. He only produced "The Widow" (which is strange because it's the softest one on the album). Matt Goldman produced the rest. Look in the little booklet.

Good song, though.

thisismyname said something about Corinthians 1:27-28...As Cities Burn has a reference to that passage in one of their songs too, if anyone is into that band...they have some pretty amazing lyrics if you havent already seen them...

sorry i have nothing to offer about this song, just thought i'd point that out.

i think most of you guys get it...im not going to put any input into it except for the whole thing of referring to his mom as "mother" instead of "mom"...

i dont think he thinks of his mother like he thinks of his father..."mother" just fit in the song better...if he said "and my mom's heart breaks..." it would not fit because its only one syllable...

As Cities Burn – Incomplete Is A Leech Lyrics 13 years ago
it's pretty obvious when you think about it.

"...and make stone beat..."

The stone is the writer's heart. He says unless God can make his heart beat (which He obviously can), then there's no hope for him.

"part my ribs like the sea and change me"

...It's obvious what he means there, and those are great lyrics by the way...

"'cause stone doesn't beat
and rock hearts don't pump anything
but i've grown not to mind because at least
stone doesn't sling like blood
or spill like guts across the floor"

The writer knows that the things of the world (and his sins) make it to where his rock/stone heart doesnt pump anything (as in he has the wrong things in his heart)...

But he has "grown not to mind" because God, through His grace, allows him to keep breathing, and at least his stone heart "doesn't sling like blood or spill like blood across the floor."

dude, think about it, how is that NOT related to pornography? "real men" (sarcasm) keep the fact that they look at pornography quiet.

Husbands look at pornography and then go to sleep next to their wives, when in reality they love pornography so much that it takes over their lives...

they exaggerated (which was awesome) and said that they dont love their wives at all...

and keep in mind that my friend does know them personally, the writers TJ and Cody told him to his face.

Blink-182 – Not Now Lyrics 13 years ago
Well, let me explain what i think.

It most definitely says "for" in the Greatest Hits booklet, but listen to the way he says the word. He wouldnt pronounce it like that for no reason at all. They put "for" in the booklet to be secretive about their faith, because they've done that for years. Also, bands do that all the time. He says "Lord", i guarantee it, however it does say "for" in the booklet.

Unfortunately, not to bum you out or anything, but you are all wrong.

The song is about the writer's struggles with pornography.

My friend knows them personally, so im 100% sure that's what it's about. Read it and it will make sense.

yes, tom delonge did say that its about dying and youre realizing youre dead and your lady is right there but she cant he or see you and you want to say goodbye, and its obvious there is some influence of his faith with God in there too.....dont deny that....
