Cheap Trick – I Want You To Want Me Lyrics 9 years ago
I think the meaning is fairly obvious, but I just want to say more specifically that this song is about a guy who wants a girl to like him as much as he likes her. He wants her to have the same degree of passion and intense feelings that he does. There's always a parallel between the way he feels and what he wants her to feel. The intensity increases from want to need, love, and even begging. He doesn't just want to win the girl over, he wants her to be in love with him. A simple and straightforward meaning.

I imagine that this girl is someone lofty and seemingly unattainable. Maybe she doesn't show much interest in him and she puts on a tough exterior. When he asks "didn't I see you crying" it's almost like he's spotted a chink in her armor and can now see that she has a more vulnerable side to her after all, and perhaps there is room in her heart to have those same sort of feelings for him.

Kelis – Bossy Lyrics 9 years ago
The intro to this song always stood out to me.

"You don't have to love me..... you don't even have to like me...... but you will respect me........"

Could you imagine if that was your wife's marriage vows at your wedding? Lol! It's just a thought that crossed my mind. No doubt some women are really like that, especially a lot of black women (not all of them, okay?). But I've always hated that attitude. I only enjoy this song because I try not to take it too literally. Nobody should brag on themselves this much unless it's a bit of a joke. At least half joking. It's nice to feel good about yourself, especially when other people are trying to put you down. But you don't need to completely buy into your own hype.

High School Musical – Bop to the Top Lyrics 10 years ago
I suppose this is one of those songs like Afternoon Delight where most people don't get the full meaning of it on first listen, if ever. It's just so light, bouncy and fun so they don't give it a second thought. But I tip my hat to Disney for pulling this one off. It's a funny song.

Hanson – Running Man Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a cool song. Catchy melody, great vocals.

I agree with your song meaning. It also sounds like the singer might have tried to confront this girl about the situation before, but it didn't go over well. And now he wants to explain his actions. He wants to convince her that the other guy isn't good for her. It reminds me of You're Going To Lose That Girl by the Beatles.

Judging from some of the lyrics, it almost sounds like it didn't work out for the guy.

I need to say goodbye
You think I didn't try
I'm not that other guy
I'm feeling so sad

But the way the song ends, I guess we can assume he didn't give up.

The Rolling Stones – Under My Thumb Lyrics 11 years ago
I agree with crash400, and I'll add to that by saying that it's understandable for the guy in this song to want the upper hand in the relationship. Especially considering the fact that this girl used to be a haughty and manipulative type who pushed him around.

I suppose the relationship described in this song may be a bit exaggerated, and in a real life relationship it would be unnecessary for the guy to gloat like this. But this song paints an ideal picture of the sort of submissive, obedient woman that most guys want. Probably my favorite Rolling Stones song for that rason, and because it sounds so cool.

Sean Lennon – Tomorrow Lyrics 11 years ago
Even though there is a rift in their relationship that will lead to them breaking up, he still can't get over the feeling of being with her. He wants to set their differences aside and pretend that everything is okay so they can be together one last time. I think that's the meaning of this song.

On a personal level, for me it's the difference between knowing something in your head but feeling something else in your heart. The heart is not always right, but you still feel it just the same.

Regina Spektor – Fidelity Lyrics 11 years ago
First of all, I agree with the explanation made by venus in mohair at the very beginning. I also have some additional thoughts...

When Regina says:

“I hear in my mind
all of this music
and it breaks my heart”

to me, that describes the desire to express yourself artistically. Like how someone could have a very strong feeling but they're not able to fully express it in conventional methods, so they do it through music or some other art form. And her ability to express herself through music is so beautiful that it breaks her heart. The music moves her just that deeply. That's what I thought of this verse when I first heard it. It could also mean that the music in her head is heartbreaking until she is able to form it into an actual song and play it. But that's just what I get from it.

The real meaning of this verse is probably that she got so “lost in the sounds” of her music that she was still too afraid to seek love in real life. Sometimes it's easier and safer to write about something than it is to live it. You don't experience quite the same joy, but you also don't risk the pain. When she finally takes that risk and suffers for it, then her friends console her by telling her it will get better.

Regina Spektor – Real Love (John Lennon cover) Lyrics 11 years ago
This is one of my favorite John Lennon songs. I don't really acknowledge the “Beatles” version. With all due respect, it was a fascinating and sentimental peculiarity, but not a real Beatles song. This Regina Spektor rendition is the only true and complete version, as John sadly did not have the opportunity to do a finished recording.

This song is about the happiness of finding true love. It's about more than just being in a semi-functional relationship. It's about finding a soulmate. That's why he/she says:

“Thought I'd been in love before
but in my heart I wanted more
seems like all I really was doing
was waiting for you”

They've found the one person that they were always longing to be with. The person they were made for. Of course such a thing may not actually exist, but it's a nice thought for someone to be in such a positive relationship that they feel perfectly compatible together.

I understand what John meant when he wrote:

“From this moment on I know
exactly where my life will go
seems that all I really was doing
was waiting for love...”

It's the security a person would feel from knowing they've found THE ONE. They know their future is going to be planned around the person they love, and they can just imagine being together forever.

I don't generally like most John Lennon covers, but I love this one. I'm glad Regina did such a respectable job on this.

Regina Spektor – Your Honor Lyrics 11 years ago
Her boyfriend got into a fight trying to defend her honor, but she thinks it's unnecessary. That's plain enough, but to break it down a bit...

I think that when she refers to him as "your honor" she is kind of teasing him about how he's overly concerned with honor. It could also mean that she thinks he was fighting for his own honor as Scuzzi said.

When she says "I don't kiss losers and I don't kiss winners" she is basically saying that she's not impressed by fighting over such things, and she's not motivated to reward or console him for the fight (whether he won or lost).

And finally, when she says "But I know what I am and I know what I ain't" she's saying that she doesn't care what people say about her because she already knows what flaws she does or doesn't have. Most people take themselves too seriously; trying to maintain a perfect image in front of others. A lot of their problems wouldn't become so severe if they just openly admited to their own imperfections in the first place. That's what it means to me.

...incidentally, the intro to this song is very irritating and the whole song becomes annoying after a while. Most Regina Spektor songs are very much of an acquired taste. I wouldn't say she's a genius. She's a talented pianist and a fair lyricist. But when it comes to her performance style, you either love it or hate it. I'm always surprised that they even let her put out records and videos, but I'm glad they do.

Sean Lennon – Falling Out Of Love Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a sad and darkly beautiful song. I'll just try to explain what it means to me by examining a few lines:

“Please just forget me”
“Never let me into your heart”
“‘Cause the one thing I am afraid of”
“Is falling out of love”

This clearly seems to describe someone who is afraid of hurting the people he loves. He's afraid to enter into a new relationship because self-doubt and past experiences have convinced him that it will probably end badly. At this point, he doesn't want to let the other person down. So it's easier to end the relationship before it even becomes serious. He also says:

“Please, I'll forget you”
“Never let you into my heart”

So he’s not only afraid of being loved, but he’s also afraid of loving someone else. He wants to avoid being hurt or betrayed. The meaning of these parts seems pretty obvious, but then he says:

“I’ve lived for the devil”
“With a head full of devilish things”
“It only was because”
“‘Cause I was so afraid”
“Of falling out of love”

It may not be as immediately obvious, but to me it says that the hopelessness and depression of the situation that caused him to give up on love also causes him to engage in dissolute and self destructive behavior, which only goes to perpetuate his problems further. When he says “Stay Away, I’m not myself” that also suggests that he’s depressed and is acting out. He has “lost his way.”

Handsome Boy Modeling School – Sunshine Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is so cool! I've always loved it. The contrasting vocal styles, the laidback, funky groove and pretty melody.

As for the meaning, it actually seems to be about a troubled, eccentric drifter who suddenly disappeared, leaving all of his friends behind to wonder what happened to him. He has cut off all ties with his former associates for some reason. He may be in rehab or something, but at times it almost sounds like he's dead! Anyway, he discovered something or someone to live for and is pursuing that "sunshine."

But somehow, this song also makes me chuckle.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Cheated Hearts Lyrics 11 years ago
My idea of this song's meaning is closer to what peaceischeaper posted above.

I think her heart was broken by her last relationship ending. Didn't necessarily mean that she was cheated on in the traditional sense, although she might have been. It could also just mean that she feels cheated by life, maybe because her boyfriend or husband died.

Whatever the case, she doesn't feel like starting a new relationship or getting married again. But she's not completely ruling it out for the future. That's what it means to me.

I agree with Major Valor and everyone else who has commented so far. The lyrics are very sweet and I like the straightforward proclaimations of love. I hope to be in love like that, where you're just so sure of your love and so commited to each other.

And the accent is really cool.

The Beach Boys – Caroline No Lyrics 11 years ago
To me, this song is about the impermanence of everything good and beautiful in this world, and our inability as humans to control or prevent change and loss in our lives. Nothing stays innocent and pure for very long before it becomes corrupted or irreversably altered.

It was true of the Americas that were once viewed as a prestine "New World" but often feels like an overdeveloped mess now. And it's true of we ourselves as well.

But although the meaning of this song is applicable to many things in this broad sense, I have to say that the example of the girl (Caroline) resonates with me most of all. Women always try to change themselves in an effort to be more acceptable in someone else's opinion, even if they seemed as if they were perfect the way they were in the first place. I think it's tragic, some of the things women do to themselves. Why can't they just be who they naturally are?

And from my perspective, it does feel like a betrayal of whatever personal feelings you might have invested in a girl. Even if you barely know her, it's still sad to see. In a way, it goes along with the Cranberries song, "Pretty". This is probably my favorite Beach Boys / Brian Wilson song.

Nellie McKay – Happy Flower Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song is about a couple with a somewhat dysfunctional relatioship. And yet, there's still love. They strive to succeed, but sometimes they fail. They struggle with their own faults, and the "Happy Flower" represents their love and their hope.

The song also makes me think of children that have very flawed parents like this. But even in the midst of serious family problems, the child still manages to thrive, almost as if the child were the "happy flower" that will bloom one day.

But anyway, it's a very pretty song.

The Cardigans – Carnival Lyrics 11 years ago
I listened to this song a lot back in 1995 when I was 12 years old. It brings back a lot of memories. It's such a dreamy and pretty song, but it always sounded kind of sad too. Perhaps the only song that can match it for melancholy beauty is Sean Lennon's "Parachute" song.

I think this song is about someone who is in love with a friend of theirs, and they think the feeling is mutual but the friend never tells them how they feel. So it ends up being an unrequited love on both ends.

Oasis – Half The World Away Lyrics 11 years ago
This song seems to be about someone who lives in some dullsville town where their life and creativity can't thrive. For years they've had ambitions to leave and accomplish something great. But they've encountered a setback or two in their time, and are now feeling discouraged. "Scratching around in the same old hole" seems to indicate that they still haven't managed to get out of this dump yet. Though their body is still technically young, their mind seems very old because the years have gone by without them seeming to have gotten any closer to their goals. Their youthful spark is fading away.

The person who is "Half the World Away" is someone they're in love with, or a fantasy soulmate they've never met but they imagine is somewhere out there. But the dream of being with this wonderful person (real or imagined) doesn't do them any good as long as they're stuck in the same old town; the same rut. They're half the world away. Nobody can give them their dreams; it's something they're left to work for on their own.

Natasha Bedingfield – Unwritten Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't often listen to female singer-songwriters, including Natasha. In fact, I'll state that I'm more of a Daniel Bedingfield fan, since I guess there's the whole competition thing/sibling rivalry or whatever. Ha ha! But anyway, a good song is a good song, and I really like this one.

I'm normally kind of pessimistic, but I like this song because it encourages you to not give up before even trying, which I have a tendency to do. It makes you feel like you don't have to be bogged down by mistakes you made in the past. You can move forward and live your life. It's a hopeful song. It makes you feel special, like there are things that only you can do. It's actually inspiring.

No Doubt – Different People Lyrics 11 years ago
I think of this song as an appraisal of Earth and it's inhabitants. Unique in that we're made in God's image, humans are the greatest of all Earthly creations. I also like the brief overview on some common characteristics of people that we share, such as our capacity to love and our ability to touch the lives of others and form bonds of friendship.

I never get tired of listening to this song. Musically and lyrically it's just beautiful. It's my favorite No Doubt song. It makes me feel good about the planet Earth itself, as well as the potential of human beings. But the song is not OVERLY optimistic with the last line being "For better or for worse, different people". Exactly right.

No Doubt – Move On Lyrics 11 years ago
I like this part of the song:

Water the music, plant the seeds in the pot
Music's the life flowing through... is it not?
Don't forget your roots, but also don't rot
Move on, move on, move on
Plant the seeds and move on

These lines seem to encourage an artist's musical growth and change. You don't want to forget your roots, but if you're never willing to try anything different you might "rot", or get stuck in a rut. You'll never develop and grow. If you look at it that way, maybe Gwen didn't really sell out as much as some of us think...

Not that I like her solo stuff, but still...

No Doubt – The Climb Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about taking on a great challenge. Others have tried and failed, and many view the obstacle as insurmountable. But determination pushes you on because the goal is worthwhile.

I like how the person in this song reflects on how far they've already come. The fear of losing or wasting all that progress encourages them to keep going. And then there's my favorite lines in the song:

"pulling myself up by a rope I better my view"
"the only thing in sight is what I must do"

So even though they see how far they still have to go, they don't think about giving up. Instead of seeing the actual obstacle, all they see is what needs to be done. Failure isn't an option to them. As they reach the end, they're probably looking back at all the people who said it couldn't be done, or at someone who got discouraged and gave up.

No Doubt – Sinking Lyrics 12 years ago
I totally agree with cellophanegirl. I don't think anyone could summarize the meaning of this song more concisely or accurately, besides Mr. EMS himself.

I like the clever, nautical analogies comparing the person's situation to a sinking ship. The music is great and I simply adore Gwen's punchy, youthful vocals. She's always great. This is probably my favorite song from the first album.

I must admit that sometimes when I listen to this song, I imagine a bunch of pirates who get so drunk celebrating some triumphant victory that nobody notices when the ship starts sinking till it's too late.

No Doubt – Just A Girl Lyrics 12 years ago
I love the music in this song but I don't like the lyrics. I think it's TOO feminist. It's okay to promote women's rights without being kind of nasty about it. I understand that Gwen was supposed to be ticked off at her dad when she wrote this song. Maybe he was overprotective at times from what I've heard. But it's a bit of an overreaction to suggest that the average girl lives in captivity and doesn't have any rights as the song says. Of course I'm sure it's not meant to be taken literally, but I just don't care for it personally. I think there's better ways of helping men and women to get along without being adversarial. Just my opinion.

No Doubt – Blue In The Face Lyrics 12 years ago
I love the lyrics and the strange melody. I think the part where Gwen says zzzZAP! is cute.

The meaning of the song is pretty obvious. It's about someone who worries too much! They run around trying to hold everything together, but it's more beneficial to cross certain bridges when you come to them. Perhaps a lot of the members of No Doubt felt this way back then. They worked hard to succeed. Maybe the song is about one or all of them.

I wonder if it's about Paulina Porizkova? I bet it is!

Cool. Thanks for that insight into that lyric, beyondchance. That makes sense to me. And the cheater is probably just trying to convince themselves that nothings wrong. No Doubt – That's Just Me Lyrics 12 years ago
This song was written by Eric Stefani and his buddy Eric Keyes. Maybe this song is about Eric's confidence that No Doubt would be successful despite what some naysayers told them.

Consider the line:
"It doesn't matter what you say
'Cause my confidence will lead the way"

And it could also be about their determination to be successful doing things their own way, without changing up their musical style to fit the grunge style that was popular at the time. It could also be a message to some other musician(s) who sell out just to be popular.

"You're always getting what you want
But you still keep looking "
..."You still keep looking for your dream"

They get what they want, but they still never fulfill their dream because they went about it the wrong way.

By the way, I'm not trying to apply this theoretical meaning of the song to No Doubt in their later years (which I also love) or to Gwen Stefani in her solo career. I really believe she's just doing what she wants and staying true to herself and to the meaning of this song.

This is a very joyous song, musically and lyrically. It seems uncharacteristic of the band in their later years, especially with Return of Saturn. But it's all good. I like Return and Rock Steady, but if only they could go back to this style once in a while. We'll see.

This song puts me in the mind of a whimsical cartoon skit put to music. Like something you might see on Animaniacs or a similar program. I like the vivid descriptions in the lyrics and the directness and simplicity of the story. I don't necessarily think the song has a double meaning but all theories are interesting to me.

I really like the part where she sings:
"Well along with my teeth my money also left me
As he made out the bill, I was moaning"
I suspect the size of the bill hurt almost as much as the tooth had!

This song was written by Eric, and you can see his sense of humor come through. I love it.

No Doubt – Sometimes Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is definitely about mistakes that someone made when they were young, whether it's sex, drugs, or whatever. They regret living a selfish life of pleasure seeking, and now they want to change. But sometimes they still find themselves in that dark place where "sunshine does not want to shine on them" and in the back of their mind they still struggle with the desires that they feel enslaved to.

It's a beautiful song that I can really relate to. Tom was the lead songwriter on this one, right? I love those early No Doubt records.

David Bowie – Under Pressure Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song. It seems to talk about all the troubles of the world, from large scale major problems to the everyday pressures that we all face.

I've always thought that this song was partially inspired by John Lennon, in the sense that a lot of musicians seemed to have become more socially conscious as a result of John's death AND the way he lived his life. I mean, there was Band Aid, Live Aid, and this song in the years following John Lennon's murder. Of course George Harrison definitely inspired those events too. But I feel Lennon's same spirit and passion in those events and even more in this song.

What is Frostie's problem?

Anyway, I dare anyone who says this song is gay to actually offer any evidence that it is! There's NOTHING in the lyrics to suggest that it's about homosexuality. Sure Melissa Etheridge is gay, but this song is not particularly gay in itself. I'm actually still curious about what some of the lyrics mean. Like:

"Go on and hold her till the screaming is gone
Go on believe her when she tells you
nothing's wrong"

What is that about?
