The "???" line, phonetically, is "uh wun no hole".
Factoring in Bert's style of dropping consonants, this leaves the line very largely open to interpretation until an official lyrics sheet comes out.

uh: A, I
wun: won, one
no: no, know, (wan)na, note
hole: hole, whole, hold, hoe?
... "to make this quite unpleasant poison"

For the line to read grammatically, the four syllables would have to read into a noun (A one-note hole) or a full sentence (I won no hoe). "Poison" almost sounds like "for yah", but there's definitely a "Z" between the syllables.

I'm partial towards "I wanna hold [pause] to make this quite unpleasant poison", but everything past the root sounds is merely interpretive.

You make me sad by attacking my person. I cry because of your piercing words...

Fuck you, he's unoriginal. What's funnier, in trying to refute my argument you've supported it: "Just because his lyrics look mostly like the site's". Like, duh?

It would take a retarded leper to mishear lyrics like "enjoy the carbon copy" & "these worms are sugar coated" as "enjoy the cup and coffee" & "these words are sugar coated." Really, it would. Not that he heard anything anyway, since all he did was copy, word-for-word, a HUGE majority of the lyrics straight off of the site. Last I checked, that's textbook UNoriginality.

And Jesus, when did At The Drive-In last have a song on the radio? Bunch of pussies, can't even play their music correctly live. Fuck you again.

You silly kids!

On the Maybe Memories DVD, Quinn mentioned seeing Bert singing with another band before asking him to come in for a test run of what would become their first demo, "Maybe Memories." Yes, Bert was in music before the Used-- as if that wasn't as plain as daylight already.

Thus, this song is not by the group we've come to know and love as The Used. 801 Underground was recorded by the band Bert was in BEFORE he joined Quinn / Branden / Jeph on a much more influencial musical pilgrimage. The Used--as a whole--had nothing to do with this song... just Bert.

Finding some sort of meaning in a song written by someone who you otherwise may have never known or had anything in common with? I mean, if we couldn't think about the meanings of the songs to us, this site wouldn't even exist!

Think about it for a second hun.

Peace bitches.

----

I promise to think about it if you promise to think about how to properly punctuate those last two paragraphs. Deal?

OK. Now, check your address bar. "Song Meanings" dot net, correct? Song MEANINGS. Not Song INTERPRETATIONS. THIS SITE IS INTENDED TO PASS AROUND WHAT THESE SONGS M-E-A-N. The site's creators' noble intent of having a forum for sharing REAL information on songs has degenerated into a free-for-all where so many people register just to make a single-sentence examination of one line of lyrics:

i'm still not convinced on the dancing "holds"...

The difference when I decipher lyrics is that I don't bother myself with the meanings behind the words. If you want the song to be dirty, the lyrics mentioning *dancing hoes* IS more sensible. However, that doesn't make the L--nor the D sound I heard at half-speed and really, really loud--just disappear.

Again, I stand by my lyrics EXCEPT one typo I somehow missed; the fourth word in the song is indeed Crack.

The Used – Back of Your Mouth Lyrics 19 years ago
Notes to the preceding lyrics:

There are numerous little changes I made throughout the lyrics body, and not all of them may seem evident or even sensible on the first listen through. However, take my word for it: I've listened to this song so many times now, in so many different ways (sped up, slowed to half speed, as loud as electronically possible, all several times over), I know what I printed and stand by every little bit of it.

The first verse ("The worms" to "so politely") gave me the most trouble. The deciphering I've provided is most on target with what sounds came out of Bert's mouth. The last line might start with a girl's name, like "Chy," but it's still unlikely that "should I" got crushed into one syllable.

"I'm not scars from dirty scratches" doesn't make sense to me, either... but that's what he says.

There is a possibility of mishearing "judge" as "touch" since Bert doesn't say it right. It comes out like a crossbreed of both words: "jutch." I think some people were listening to the beginning of that word when deciphering lyrics while others listened to the end of it, which is why there is such vehement disagreement over which word it actually is. I decided to stay with "judge" because while there's no way the first sound could be a T, the "tch" sound is very close to the "dge" sound; the latter is merely voiced. (Ask a Linguistics major what this means. I'm too lazy to explain it myself.)

Everything else is self-explanitory for people with an open mind. Have fun rocking out to the skeemo, kiddies. (Ska + Emo)

THESE ARE THE BEST LYRICS FOR THIS SONG ANYWHERE SHORT OF BEING IN BERT'S OWN HANDWRINTING.
*x*'s denote changes from the lyrics at the page's top

Yea-yeah

The worms, they *crap* like words and
Turn your teeth up and *runtly*
*I'm on drinks, so I clean off all them*
*She* fit these so politely

All *praise is* sugar-coated
Looking between *your* mouth and mine
*I'm not* scars from dirty scratches
Scabs and ashes, the back of your mouth!!

In this exchange, I often judge myself
So go ahead and let those dirty words pass right through me
Just passing through, not stopping by
Not saying hi
Girl, you can't kill a liar

You throw up everywhere, *yeah*
Enjoy the *carbon copy*
I am the puddle, make me
Dancing *holds* and *stagnant's* OK

These *worms* are sugar-coated
*Crap(')s off*, they still *come out too tough*
*Left* scars from dirty scratches
Scabs and ashes, the back of your mouth!!!

In this exchange, I often judge myself
So go ahead and let those dirty words pass right through me
Just passing through, not stopping by
Not saying hi

Can't kill

Annie,
One of your earlier comments said it might be "changing phrases" as opposed to "changing places"... When I listen to the song I hear "changing places", but if you read back on my theory, "changing phrases" would actually fit it perfectly.

It's so weird that you people are ready to change what you hear--and I use the word "hear" in its VERY loosest sense--just so you can meld the lyrics into your fucking rediculous theories.

We need some artists commenting in these forums. Seriously!... although we should probably take a hint that somebody involved in the making of this song doesn't want its words printed, seeing as this is the ONLY song of 12 on this album that had next to no lyrics.

I have listened to this song on Windows media players( yes i can be usefull sometimes) and ive slowed it down to half of its original speed and they actually really say J-U-D-G-E.

The only person who used special media to listen to the song in a closer way says the word is:

I'm having lots and lots of trouble with the verses. Reading the originally posted lyrics again, some of the interpretations make much more sense than (and SOUND more like) what I came up with, especially the first verse. Likewise, some of my stuff just couldn't be wrong.

I'm sticking with "suddenly" over "should I fit these" for now; too few syllables for the latter.
"Cup and coffee" is DEFINETELY "carbon copy."
The two "dirty scratches" lines sound like he's saying what I wrote ("I'm not" the first time, "left" the second); lyrical sensibility aside, whoever thought the second one sounds like "got" was either smoking crack or just too lazy to figure it out.
"Judge," not "touch," without a doubt. Stop thinking it's touch, because you're wrong and thus wasting brain cells.
Learn to spell, kids; it helps, I promise. ("lier" = Liar)

I never fully trust lyrics that aren't directly from a CD inset... that is to say, pretty much all internet lyric sites. I mean, the one that leads this thread missed a very obvious "now" in the final chorus. People get ctrl + c happy and stop giving a shit about the accuracy of the lyrics they're posting.

I dunno. Does anyone else find it odd that everybody is trying to dissect lyrics to a song that has yet to be fully deciphered?

I think this song contains Bert's highest recorded note. I've got the same range as Bert and recently have been "experimenting," finding different ways to expand the upper end of my range. In my messing around, I had discovered one method which involves running air over the vocal chords while inhaling. The result sounds quite airy, and in my production of it, ambiguous as to exactly which note I'm singing.

That little thing he does at the end of the interlude--the last "can't kill"; you all know which one--is a falsetto D natural, the fourth line on the treble clef, about two half-steps away from reaching the top of female alto range. The quality of that note Bert sings is reminisent of the style I've come across, albeit far clearer. It is without a doubt in my mind his highest recorded note to date.

If you can prove this assertion wrong with another recording, please do.

men look at the date these were posted, long before you had the album and lyrics to go off of, please understand that i played off ear and things don't exactly have to be right.

"your sin" = wrong
"a little while" = wrong
singmeanything = wrong
anyone who cared, LISTENED to the song (ANY song), and in doing so actually extracted correct lyrics (annieneedsabandIL, myself) = right
anyone who disagrees with me = wrong, for i am God; eat it

I have to go and buy fireworks now. Because I am old enough to do so. Unlike many of the pre-pubescent morons who spread their worthless two cents all over this website, protected from their own idiocy and inaccuracy by the anominity of the internet, on whom I will waste no more of my time tonight.

ps: I originally came to this site thinking that it distributed official meanings behind the music and lyrics of songs. Imagine my disappointment when I came to find that it was largely written for by people who, based off of a three-word string or fewer of lyrics, just make any old shit up. Disappointment Central.

Well, even if "the ocean" doesn't make sense, he's still using the SH sound, not the S.

So I guess he's saying "your shin," eh?

Yeah, THAT makes a fuckload more sense. thx2u2lol.

"nor is it lyrically anything the used would ever write."

Good to know you're an expert on such things. It's so handy to have the guy who will tell us every lyric this band "would ever write" in the history of time and space around.
Does your all-encompassing knowledge on the matter tell you that Bert would be capable of writing
"So turn up the stereo and grab the mic
cause I know I'm alright
got my friends on the side
so stand up stand tall
let 'em know who you are
We're the band,
we're the band, gonna sing
Here we goooooo"?
Well, he did. Search "801 Underground" if you doubt.

In conclusion, you are a presumtuois cock, and you failed to learn how to capitalize, as you have (and shall) failed at everything else in life. Shut the hell up.

I'll check these lyrics more carefully later, even though it's clearly "lust to my brain" each time. (This includes the backwards part at the beginning)

Of the three ideas currently on the table about the theme of this song (sin --> repent / sex / suicide), I don't see how there's any contest: suicide creates the most sweeping consistancy with the lyrics.

They'll clean up the mess
Bite into the bottle/chew up the glass
Kick out the chair/hung there
The abuse (you've) been through

I think much of what turns people off about The Used -- yes, aside from Bert's less-than-palatable screaming, which I rather quite enjoy -- is the poetic, seemingly nonsensicle lyrics. Some people need to understand EVERYTHING a song is trying to say. I don't really give a rat's ass sometimes: if the music moves me to tears or to moshing, I could give a shit less what the singer says, as long as he says it EFFECTIVELY.

"Well, you're never gonna find it, if you're looking for, it won't come your way": ungrammatical.
"Dined and dashed, the pianist peddled into morning": meaningless.
So what? The songs evoke feeling that I cannot deny and will not ignore just because of the freaking words, y'know?

Hit the stop light, groovin to some Isleys
Rims still movin, so I bumpin little spinners while I'm
Smokin on a B, dippin through the streets, bumpin R&B, and I got the heat for the 23s
And I do it

When my Earth and the Wind smoke a Fire
Lemme get your sheets wet listenin to Keith Sweat
Put you in a daze with Maze
Fulfillin ou-wa every sensation, slow jammin, havin deep sex
You ready for the world, girl? Come and go with me,
I touch you all over your body, baby, don't say no to me
And ever-known you be controllin' me
I'm lovin the way you be holdin me when I be listenin to Jodeci
And when I come over and bend your ass
She be bumpin Teddy Pendergrass
I done hit it from the back to the melody of Roll It Slow
Now I gotta go up in it fast, but I'ma finish last
No matter how much of a thug you see, I still spit it like it's R&B
Come to the club with me
And when some Luther come on
I hope you feelin me instead of be in love with me
(Sha-rah)

Baby, drop another slow jam
And all the lovers need to hold hands
And if you ain't got no man, hop up in my Brougham
I keep it pimpin like a old man
You gots to roll with the plan, cuz if not then I
Take it to my dome, then I gotta bone, stay up in the zone, gotta get you home while I roll on chrome
And I do it

Baby, drop another slow jam
And all the lovers need to hold hands
And if you ain't got no man, hop up in my Brougham
I keep it pimpin like a old man
You gots to roll with the plan, cuz if not then I

Welp, I guess nest time I revamp shitty lyrics I'm gonna start from scratch. This is the forth or fifth time I've changed something after finally LISTENING to it instead of taking it for granted just because I thought the original author knew what he was doing.
Changes highlighted by asterisks

Make a circle square, a rectangle *curb*
Use a smile as a noun and now think like a verb

ALSO, I have to admit that I simply can't understand two lines in this song, and merely have my best interpretation at the moment.

When the shirt came off (Almost sounds like 'when the sugar cane ___'?)
Spoon fills with cancer (I just can't figure out the stuff before 'with cancer')

Heh, multiple edits like annie.

I originally thought it quite odd that these lyrics were the only ones not included in the booklet. Two possibilities crossed my mind: one--there might be lyrics in this song the band doesn't want in print (personal attacks, confessions, etc), or two--leaving out the lyrics left major room for ambiguity. I think it's feasable that the first line of the pre-chorus has a double-entendre in it, namely the word "blue," which could also be spelled "blew."

Of course, I have no proof of this whatsoever.

...

Jesus Christ, the lyrics booklet has Sean's lines right there... "THIS IS NOT A SMILE."

Personal notes updated.

Heh heh... well, after listening to the song more carefully, I have to concede that the "little while" lyrics are a misprint. Bert indeed says "Haven't seen him smile EEN awhile." I'd noticed the syllable shortage early on, but I had thought of it, even sang along with it as "Haven't seen him smile'na LIL while."

TWO NEW EDITS
When your pants came off and I TURN you over
Haven't seen him smile in AWHILE

I don't hear the L in "break out and howl," but "break out and how" just doesn't make fucking sense. Thoughts?

...

Annie, I just checked each of your suggestions (inside, really quick, sorta feels like cancer, phases, switch) and I've changed my second choral lead-in as such:

REALLY QUICK, switch sides, spoon fills with cancer
And the room is shaking, now you're changing places
Then I SWITCH my pace and my breathing races
When you mention blue...

I can see why you heard the other lyrics; like with "off" in the first line ending with a K, Bert's got some funny ideas on pronunciation.

*Time is said with a "ts" sound, like in "biTS": Get it up in tsime
*While the first part of the line is fairly incoherent, the last two words of that line are With Cancer
*There's definetely an L in Places

Thanks for your help! I welcome all other comments as well as somebody bold enough to figure out that poem at the beginning of the interlude.

This was the only song on the album that didn't have complete lyrics in the inset. I have no idea where people got the lyrics I find on most sites (including this one) but they somehow managed to get THE ONLY LINE PRINTED IN THE INSET wrong!
Wrong: Haven't seen him smile in awhile
Right: Haven't seen him smile in a little while
This leads me to doubt the accuracy of these lyrics’. I took it upon myself to figure out the lyrics for myself. It was really hard; Bert sure doesn’t have a die-hard take on pronunciation when he sings. (look at how on the first line, he ends “off” with a K-sound, or the ambiguity between “you” or “kill” in the heavy chorus.)
Here’s the best I could come up with. I’ve capitalized the parts that I thought sounded different from the lyrics above.

When the shirt came off, it was all in time
When a m.m.m.minute turned into a mile
And then I broke that GRID, and I cut it out

I’m very interested in hearing people’s thoughts on my interpretation of the lyrics. Again, ambiguity is prevalent throughout the song, so all of my capitalized changes are quite open to question / interpretation. (ps: anyone with good speakers / headphones -- or a professional sound editor? -- might be able to make out that poem in the interlude. doing so would instantly make you hot shit.)
