Annie Lennox – Pavement Cracks Lyrics 19 years ago
This song probably is about loneliness but it means something else to me. There was a rape on my college campus and after the assault, this song makes me think about how a rape victim would be feeling. When she sings "love don't show up in the pavement cracks" I think of how, when a person is raped, it is not an act of love, hence, when a person is forced to the ground (the pavement) no love can be found. The rest of the lyrics seem to be portraying a sense of helplessness or hopelessness. She's wondering when she'll be happy again, have "strength to live," and when she'll find her "comfort zone." When a woman is raped, I think she feels similarily. It may feel like her world has come crashing down and because sexual assualt is such a violent, intrusive act, the victim may feel like there is no safe place and she can never feel happiness again like she did before. Again, I don't think this was necessarily the story that was intended to be portrayed; it's just what it means to me.

Tori Amos – Mother Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that this song is about prostitution. The whole changing her name thing and being in someone else's dream is the girl playing the part the man wants. The phrase, "the car is here," references how prostitutes are often picked up in cars. A dancing girl is not a prostitute, but still sells her body for money, only it's by stripping, not sex. I think the part about being a soldier and not crying is about being strong despite the horror of having to sell one's self for money, which I'd guess feels as bad or even worse than being raped because a girl feels she has no other way of surviving other than allowing men to use them.

Garbage – As Heaven Is Wide Lyrics 19 years ago
The first time I read the lyrics it made me think of what Jesus may have been actually feeling when he was dying. Because Jesus was to die for our sins, every sin that a person commits is like another thorn in his side. I agree that it's about betrayal but it seems like Jesus feels betrayed by God.

Garbage – Milk Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about manipulating someone else, especially a woman who is acting weak and dependent in order to "make" someone else come back to them. The most obvious example of this is "I am weak/But I am strong /I can use my tears to/Bring you home," where she is saying that by crying and appearing weak she can make the other person come back to her. When she says "I'm waiting for you...," she is also demonstrating the same theme because it implies that the girl cannot live without the other person; that her life is on hold until the other person returns to her. Unfortunately I'm not exactly sure what the references to milk, red hot kitchens, or oceans has to do with the song. The kitchen part makes me think of a homemaker and the red hot part makes me think of a prostitute. What I make of this is once again, a girl is acting weak and dependent (stereotypical stay-at-home wife) but is seductive because of this supposed passive/submissive nature. The "I am lost/So I am cruel/But I'd be love and sweetness/If I had you" line once again is an example of manipulation. The girl's life has no meaning ("I am lost" without the other person and she is justifying her cruelness or negativity by blaming it on the person, saying she'd be sweet if he or she returned.

Otis Redding – (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song but it isn't a happy song at all. In my opinion, it's about someone very depressed reflecting on his life and trying to find himself. He speaks of loneliness, having nothing to live for, and nothing changing. He is unable to meet other people's demands or the standards they created for him (I can't do what ten people tell me to do). I think he's trying to find meaning in life or possibly the meaning of his life specifically. As he watches the tide roll away, he might be wishing he could go away with them and disappear like the waves.
