Arcade Fire – Haiti Lyrics 14 years ago
Clearly, this is about all of the unborn children killed under Duvalier's regime hiding in the rivers and jungles of Haiti, in spirit form, waiting until they've absorbed enough souls to become allpowerful. At that point, they plan to arise as a vengeful army of undead Haitian children and conquer the earth.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) Lyrics 14 years ago
I think its about how modern society places too much emphasis on youth, at the cost of respecting childhood and age. Its all about fast cars, fast dates, fast video games. TV programs and movies are all marketed toward the teen and young adult demographic.

The message of the song is that children need to be allowed to grow at their own pace, rather than being rushed into adolescence at age 7, and thatthe elderly are every bit as important as the young.

Arcade Fire – Haiti Lyrics 15 years ago
"Well, I myself have been to Haiti and this song really only looks at the negatives! The people there are some of the nicest and happiest people you'll meet. I went down there last Apriul to help build a school and I'm going again this april!! Super excited!"

Perhaps if you had been there while the Duveliers were ruling and your family was hunted down and killed by their secret police, you would have somewhat more mixed feelings about Haiti.

The Mars Volta – Tetragrammaton Lyrics 15 years ago
How's this:

The beginning of the song is about the priest trying to exorcize the demon ("when she awakes will she still be with us?"). When she is in her exorcism-induced trance, the preist asks the demon how he came to possess the woman. The demon explains that the nun created him herself, by believing in the "Christ summoned through candle and bell." Basically, it says that she created him because she believed in demons so strongly, and that all religious and supernatural characters are figments of the imagination. They have "stuffed a voice" inside God, making their own dieties and demons that they now have to deal with.

Dissatisfied with this answer, the priest crucifies her and leaves her to die. The rest of the song is about her gnashing her teeth and spasing out in the dungeon (the vocal sounds remind me of an epileptic seizure) and then, finally, she dies. The last couple verses are about her body being taken out.

Marilyn Manson – Valentine's Day Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure Valentine from Holy Wood was a guy, not a girl. The "pregnant girl" most likely refers to Coma White, the book's female protagonist.

He needs to get that damned book published already so we can finally understand the whole album; he's only released one chapter so far.

The Mars Volta – Televators Lyrics 15 years ago
Somehow, I can't quite bring myself to believe that they are talking about Julio going to hell (layer 5, or whatever). I know they use biblical symbolism a lot, but the hell thing seems to go against the grain of the song.

I think that "you should have seen the curse that flew right by you" could have two meanings.

On one hand, it could refer to the people who saw Julio's cursed body fly "right by" them on its way to the street.

On the other (better) hand, it could be an expression of guilt and injustice from Julio's still-living friends. The tragesies that pushed Julio to kill himself are a curse, and it could have hit anyone...but for some reason, God decided that Julio would be the one to suffer. They are talking about how the curse flew past them and took their friend instead, and how they wish it had been one of them instead. This goes hand in hand with the "pull the pills, save your grace" thing; pulling the pills is metaphorical for not doing drugs, which would "save your grace" from madness and suicide.

Also, the literal translation of "auto da fe" is "act of faith." This term was used to refer to religious executions, but the MV might have other meanings for it. It could also mean that Julio commited an act of faith by committing suicide, because he was sure everything would be better if he died (in Take the Veil it is hinted that he was mistaken, unfortunately). Or it could be sarcastic, telling us to have faith even though God has turned out to be heartless and arbitrary.

Marilyn Manson – Antichrist Superstar Lyrics 15 years ago
Hey Jesus rock girl, would you do me and everyone else a favor and read what it says on that little bar at the top of the window? You know, the one that appears whenever you use your web browser? Alright, see how it says "SongMeanings" before anything else?

You do?

Really?

Then why in God's name are you going off about your idiot religious opinions HERE of all places? If you think you have something to interpret about the song, that's great. If you can contribute any background information that makes the lyrics easier to understand, that's even better. But if you want to write an endless tangent about how much Jesus loves you and me (but not those baby-eating nonchristians; they're going to hell no matter what, those losers), go to a theology site. You'll probably end up getting your ass kicked by someone who actually knows anything about Martin Luther, Jesus, and the origins of Christianity, but at least you'll know where you are.

In the meantime, does anyone have anything to say about the SONG?

Billy Talent – Lies Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is more political than anything else. The "inside an office" and "bulletproof your limousine" parts make me think that the subject of the song is a member of the political elite, who keeps up his approval ratings by lying to the public and cleaning everything up for the media.

Kind of dissapointing, really. Billy Talent's distinctiveness comes from its usual first person vignettes (River Below, Standing In the Rain, etc). Making another generic punk rock song about how bad the government is sort of cheapens them.

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 16 years ago
You guys are all right. American Pie has millions of double meanings and each stanza is deliberately designed so it can be interpreted many ways. However, all the possible meanings of the song are thematically linked: they are all about the inevitable death of America. The music personalities are only symbols that McLean uses to illustrate the loss of our prosperity and worthiness in general. I think the second to last verse especially makes this apparent, with the flames symbolizing destruction and the satanic figure taking the place of the old music legends showing us that our culture and way of life has given way to corruption and decadence. In short, the song is saying that we are past our prime; no matter that area you are talking about, its only downhill from here.

Marilyn Manson – Antichrist Superstar Lyrics 16 years ago
OH MY FUCKING GOD!!! This is the most infantile shit-throwing match I've ever forced myself to read! None of you morons know anything about religion, Christianity, or anything at all. Most blatantly of all, ninety percent of you DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND THE FUCKING SONG!!!

It's about the well of repressed hatred that looms within the hearts of all human beings. Marilyn isn't complaining about Christianity, nor is he advocating the antichrist (which he doesn't even believe in). The whole point of the band is to reflect the darker side of the human psyche and make people aware of what makes them do bad things. If Marilyn is evil for making songs about bad shit, then doctors must be evil for publishing their research on cancer cells. On the other hand, he isn't a fucking saint; Manson wants to make a profit just like everyone else, but he also wants to get his message accross.

Stop voicing your tragically uneducated philisophical views and TALK ABOUT THE GODDAMNED LYRICS! What are you all, four years old? Makes me sick.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there, skeggs. Terrorist groups have political motivations. This song stresses that the bomber has personal motivations. Enya – Only Time Lyrics 16 years ago
The only Enya song that doesn't suck ass. For once, the slick bitch doesn't cash in on fairies or unicorns and just makes a nice song. The cliches about your love lying and your dove dying might betray a little bit of her poser-sentimental new age stupidity, but if you don't listen to the lyrics too closely (and why the hell would you want to?), this is an awesome song. Lil Jon – Get Low Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is truly a great country we (or at least Li'l John and myself) live in. In the Land of Opportunity, anyone can strike it gold, and every human being has the potential to acheive their dreams. Just think about it: some poor, practically retarted southern black guy with long dreads and a really nauseating grin just has to scream "skeet" a few million times into a microphone, and he's a celebrity. Instead of dissing Li'l John, we should be congratulating him for defying all odds and proving to brain-dead patients everywhere that they still have a chance. And hey, if people like to dance to it, there's nothing to complain about.

PS: There are several meanings for the word "skeet," but the most common one means to pull out before ejaculation. White people aren't supposed to know that, but knowledge is meant to be shared. Thank you to David Chappelle for helping spread the word.

Reinvent the meaning of the word "ridiculous" in ninety minutes. Go, Tenacious D!

Alright, this has been going on long enough. Everyone so far has either made some sort of half-composed barely coherent attack on the rap genre, or struggled to defend Fiddy from the above. In the interest of ending the bullshit, I challenge anyone to answer this question:

How is this song more degrading to women than to men?

See kids, there are two people singing this song. One is a man, one is a woman. Both of them talk about having oral sex, most likely with each other. You all following me? Even the special kids in the back row (I'm talking to you, Acci)? Good.

So, how is this offensive to any particular gender, race, ethnicity, or any other politically correct categorization? Go on, I'm all ears.

Billy Talent – River Below Lyrics 16 years ago
For the sake of people like Nobodys Hero, I give you all this:

"Rejected...since day one...
My name is....bastard son...
I've been damned...so many times I've lost count..."

This part is saying that this character has fallen short of every standard he ever set for himself and was rejected and unwanted his entire life.

"Blue collar...working man"

He is a low-wage worker whose creative potential and sensitivities are ignored.

"Devices...master plan"

The "devices" in question are the gadgets he is building to carry out his vengeful "master plan" of destruction.

"Bipolar...with a mental side arm"

He is so deppressed and bipolar that he is potentially deadly (mental sidearm).

"I'm sick and I'm twisted,
I'm broken you can't fix it"

At this point in his life, the character is pushed so far that he is beyond redemption. It is too late for anyone to change his mind about the "master plan."

"Don't make me, cause I'll do it;
red button and we'll all go...into the river below"

One more little push could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. He'll push the button to detenate his homemade bomb and send himself and everyone he knows into the "river below," a mythological term for the land of the dead.

"Into the river below...all running from the inferno,
They'll think I'm insane...but you'll all know my name."

The inferno could either mean the fires of hell, or the explosion from the bomb. Everyone will think the bomber was insane, but as long as he got famous for it, its alright with him. Anything is better than living life the way its been so far; KILL EVERYONE!

"Into the river below...I'm running from the inferno,
I'll take all the blame, the front page and the fame."

This is a highly accurate description of how many mass murderers think. I saw an FBI interview on TV, and seeing their names in the paper is what motivates most MMs.

"Contraption...made up of...
nuts and bolts...creates the...
new monster...to burn your family tree down."

Reiterating that he is building a bomb to kill many people. The "new monster" is the explosion, and killing someone would destroy part of his family tree.

"Tick-tocking...time's up now..."

The bomb is about to explode.

"Split second...the world frowns..."

In a momentary flash of light, the mass murderer and all his victims are gone forever. The world frowns on his mass homicide, but at least now he will be known for something.

"Lonely heart...never had nobody."

If only someone had recognized the character's virtues and given him the affection that every human being is due, he would have never thought of building a bomb. As it is, since no one cared about him he is losing nothing by killing himself...among other people.

This is basically a sympathetic look at the last century's rash of mass murderers and what drove them to do what they did. On Billy Talent's website, Ben says that they were inspired by Columbine, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the DC sniper. The message is that everyone has the potential to do terrible things, and under enough stress anyone could be the next John Lee Malvoe.

50 Cent – Candy Shop Lyrics 16 years ago
Let me clarify a couple of things. I personally despise rap, but saying that Fiddy should be in jail or shot yet again is just fucking retarted.

1. Rap does not degrade women. If anything, Candy Shop makes men out to be sexually ravenous monstrosities, not women. I'm fucking sick of all you feminazis bitching on about how anything even remotely sexual is "degrading to women." If the existence of human sexuality is an insult to the female persuasion, then we do indeed live in a fucked-up world.

2. What the hell do you guys mean this song is "inappropriate"? Do you even know what inappropriate MEANS?

3. I don't get it when people bitch about music like this "corrupting our children." If kids don't know about sex by the time they hear this song, their parents are DOWNS syndrome.

Again, I personally hate 50 cent along with most of the rap genre, but honestly; if you don't like the music, don't listen to it.

PS: What the hell is wrong with Acci? Is she a mummy or something?

Billy Talent – Standing In The Rain Lyrics 16 years ago
I think everyone whose posted so far was pretty much right. The "missing since 1983" indicates that the hooker in question either ran away as a child or was kidnapped and sold into prostitution. The "raindrops running through my veins" means that she has spent so long working the filthy, rain-covered streets that that is all she is: a worn and beaten creature of rainwater and tears.

If you didn't understand the movie, watch it a couple more times; there are some connections that you need to see several times to make. Even so, there are a couple things that I still can't figure out.

P.S: the song itself is about a child or teenager who looks through the world around him and thinks that it is hollow and meaningless. The hustle and struggle that everyone goes through to accomplish their daily routine seems like a sick joke when faced with the unimportance of life. The line "the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" implies that not existing at all would be better than being trapped in this world of figment and illusion.

You guys are right, for the most part. It is a song about how death is a natural part of life, and since it inevitably happens to everyone and evewrything (even the seasons winds and rain) there is no reason to be afraid when your time comes.

There are only two things I don't get. One is the whole "love of two is one" line. What does that mean? The other is the whole thing with Death talking to a dying girl as if they were lovers; is that just to be creepy and poetic, or is there something I've missed?

Echo and the Bunnymen – The Killing Moon Lyrics 17 years ago
Taylor, do you have difficulty in understanding the possibility that there may be one or two songs in existence that AREN'T about a guy and a girl getting together/breaking up? Does it strike you as psychologically possible that sometimes people are actually capable of expressing genuine originality in lyrical form? You must be accustomed to listening to Shitney Spears and the rest of the boob-fest 24/7, because you have no concept of art whatsoever.

Anyway, I think the song is about predestination; how everything that occurs in our lives, particularly death-is innevitable. The singer is exppressing the futility of trying to deny the cosmic plan ("fate up against my will") and how no one ever escapes death ("the killing time"). This aspect of the song reminds me a little of "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult, another extremely awesome song.
The last line of the song ("you will give yourself to him") implies that our own actions will conspire against us to push us into our predestined fate; no matter what we do, we are trapped in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

P.S: Donnie Darko is the best fucking movie ever made!

Modest Mouse – Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is meant to be taken on a much grander scale. It seems to be about how the universe is an uncaring place that doesn't bend in order to conform to our wishful thinking. There isn't really a heaven or a hell, we will never "live again" (reincarnate), and when we die we will live on only in the memories of other humans ("your body may be gone I'm gonna carry you into my heart, mind, soul"). When the last human being dies, the universe won't care; the ocean will breathe salty like it always has before.
