Let me clear this up a little bit: I thin the Jesus idea started when addictedjane said that Jesus was on the cover. I see no Jesus on the cover. What I do see is a Russian political cartoon from the 1910's featuring Rasputen controlling the Tzar and Tzarina. I don't think the cover has anything to do with the song. In Guitar World (1997) Billy said, "A simple song in a country tuning, 'Thirty-Three' was the first song the I wrote when I came home from all the Siamese Dream touring. I took three days off, and this was literally the first thing that came out of my hands when I sat down. I was living in my new house for the first time, and this song conveys all of that." |

I think this song could either be about people and spirituality and stuff or about celebrityism (did i spell that correctly? is that a word?). you can look at them as two completely different interpretations or you can mix them so that it's about the deifying of celebrities. if you take that meaning and then look at some of the lines- someone can be in the spotlight and worshipped one minute and then nothing the next minute "you know i'm not dead" well, it's a crazy theory. i might be looking at it a little too deep, but who knows what billy was really intending. i have a feeling i probably did too much, but if he did make that connection, then he's a fucking genius....wait- he's already a fucking genius. nevermind. |

You're right...the 33 is from a bottle...well, that's what I've heard. It seems like everyone has heard Billy say something different about it. What I heard is that he had just gotten home from the Siamese Dream tour and that was the first thing that came out. And it seems to fit the purpose...about being home again after a long time. It's funny how many of these songs I can relate to :) And Billy didn't write much religious stuff before Machina came along...that's where it really started. |

This is the first SP song I heard (besides Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sandness) and I probably owe a lot to it. Musically I think it's perfect- not the most exiting song but perfect. It shaped the Pumpkins for me, and I spent hours constantly obsessing over it when I haden't heard much of their other stuff. I always viewed it as a sort of mockery- not of any particular musician. This person tries to be dark and stuff, and that's what they do somewhere-he pulls his hair down-over a frowning smile a hidden diamond you cannot find a secret star that cannot shine over to you may the king of gloom, be forever doomed he is the king of gloom. his smile is a frown. i think the song describes it better than i can. |
