Agalloch – Celestial Effigy Lyrics | 10 years ago |
The opening quote is from Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem Nature (fragments on nature). In the booklet for the album, it isn't included on the page that has the lyrics for this song, but it does appear on the very first page itself. The parts that are in between dashes ( - ) are italicized in the booklet, but I'm not sure if that's possible to do here. If it is, please let me know how, or if you think there's a better way to convey it, I'm open to suggestions. |

Agalloch – The Hawthorne Passage Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"One thing that people don't know, and probably won't get, is the fact that Hawthorne Passage, that whole song, is about Portland. In a way. It's got a double meaning. But musically it's inspired by Portland, just driving around downtown Portland at night listening to gothic rock music. It's what totally initially inspired the first part of that song, and the second part was inspired by driving around Portland listening to Godspeed You Black Emperor. It has a very Portland vibe to it, hence the name The Hawthorne Passage which is named after the Hawthorne Bridge, one of the few bridges that connects the two parts of the city because there's a river that runs through the city. Conceptually, not musically, the song is a journey of life towards death. A simple, prosaic concept, and that's where the movie samples come into play. The 'life' part of the city, in the lively downtown area, that musical expression is there, and then the passage to death is sort of on the other side of the city, when you drive out towards the airport, the city degrades more and more. North Portland is kind of a slum, and it's like going towards death, life spiraling downward. That's where that kind of inspiration came from. The post rock vibe you get from bands like Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor and even some of the Swans material, it totally reflects that desolation and decay, in society more so than anything else. I thought that was a great way to express the death part of the song. The movie samples came into play at the beginning of the death section of the song and introduces that next step." ~John Haughm - http://www.lotfp.com/content.php?interviewid=13 |

Agalloch – The Watcher's Monolith Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"It has a lot to do with a horrible illness I had in Europe a couple years ago and the healing process which involved the Externsteine in the North Rhine region of Germany. Long story short, I visited the Externsteine with my friends and we stayed there late into the night and built a fire with traveling flutists and percussionists who we had met that day. The energy in the stones of the Extersteine is said to have healing properties so I laid down in the sepulchre, in total darkness, while the sounds of flutes and drums resonated through the stones and into my body. I spent about 30 minutes in the sepulchre…it was one of the most amazing spiritual experiences I have ever had. The following day, my horrible illness was gone. The overall message in this song is that these ancient Pagan sites are very important and must be protected and preserved." -John Haughm |

Pink Floyd – Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"On some copies of the vinyl version, the dripping tap at the end of the song is cut into the run-off groove, so it plays on infinitely until the listener removes the stylus from the album, an effect obviously lost on the CD release, though the dripping continues for approximately 17 seconds after all other sounds have ceased." -from the wikipedia page |

The Moody Blues – The Balance Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I don't know about how Jesus came about his enlightenment, but you mentioning that reminded me of the story of Buddha. He meditated under a tree for 49 days until he he attained enlightenment. the song talks about the guy looking up through the tree and such and it just sort of reminded me of that. I don't think it's about anyone in particular but maybe just has some parallels to the old stories. |
