yeah that slow drum beat in the verses is similar. also, the lyrics tell a similar story about sex, guilt, etc, and are written in a similar style. "i want a girl who's too sad to give a fuck" - that is suuuch a brutally honest and awesome lyric. this is one of those choruses you have to yell whenever it comes on. |

no-one claims that green day invited (sic) (im assuming you meant invented) punk rock, man on tv. what they did do, however, was help put punk rock into the mainstream. just like nirvana - they didnt invent grunge but they got it mainstream attention. like it or not, green day have had a massive influence on modern music. and all you people who think you are so alternative by saying that green day have "gone all mainstream" are idiots - they were always mainstream sounding in a way. they were never pretending to be this hardcore punk band, they had bubblegum harmonies and nice-sounding chord progressions from the very beginning. and that was what was so good about them. unfortunatly now, they are getting boring and repetitive, both in their music and in their lyrics. |

yeah the movie is one of my all time favourites. the soundtrack is also one of the best - i also love "die motherfuckers" by ice cube, (the one thats played when they smash up that damn photocopier), and samir raps a line of it when he goes home drunk from peter's apartment - "back up in your ass with the resurrection" in that accent of his makes me laugh every time. and this song is awesome. i can see why even if you didnt like rap you'd love this. it fits in so well with the scene, and i love how it fades out when lumbergh comes over to his desk. i think its having a go at some political bands. i know sonic youth are politically outspoken, but their songs are subtle with their messages. i think they are having a go at the bands who dont know anything about politics but bombard their audience with blatant and cliched political songs. yeah, the story is very very well written, as are the lyrics to this song. although the lyrics have a specific meaning, it is one of those songs that can translate to general human situations. new years eve is no big deal - it is an excuse to get drunk, and a night to think about all the shit youve been through in a year, and make unanswered prayers that everything will be better when you wake up in someones garden. thats what i take from this song - as with a lot of thursday songs, like 'for the workforce, drowning' and 'where the circle ends' - bitterness towards our social customs and practices.
