Ryan Adams – My Winding Wheel Lyrics

I am with Hunter on this one. The girl is his "winding wheel", as in a wheel of fortune that totally controls how he feels, that labilizes him. |

Rufus Wainwright – Foolish Love Lyrics

huh i got something totally different from this. to me it sounds more like a coming out song, as in rufus saying he's not prepared to spend his life pretending he's attracted to girls (especially mind the "me and my mistress the princess" line). a song in the vein of elton john's "rocket man" or scissor sisters' "take your mama". but maybe you guys have a point. maybe the song's about not wanting to feel that anguish of when you're fatally attracted to someone (and pretend like you're totally cool and aloof with that person), which i suppose is very universal. Or, you could still see it in the first sense, but without it being in any particular relation to any sexual orientation, like in: not wanting to fake love for someone. OR, it might be interpretable as: wanting to stop longing for a person whose whims and craziness you have to adapt to, just to make sure they "love" you back. anyway, what a superbly written and poignant song! |

Ryan Adams – Halloween Lyrics

i always experienced this song as very comforting one, but while listening to it for the millionth time just now, i came to realize that it might very well be another song about (or addressed to) beth orton. evidence: the snowflake reference (see "the sweetest decline"); "we are here to help her sing her songs" - it seems that ryan is subtly suggesting her musical incompetence, being "just" a singer and ever dependent on other people for her success. kind of like how in "english girls approximately" he is dissing her brother for "not knowing the blues at all". let's face it, he's just trying to get back at her for hurting him (and who could blame him ;p) - a universal theme. so in this sense, you might say it's a self-comforting song. but i also hear compassion. and so much more that's even harder to put into words. however, i absolutely adore it. |

in a couple of 2006 live renditions ryan has been changing around the lyrics of the bridge near the end to: "i do everything i can to confuse you, and it works" - haha, great one. |

back on "exile on franklin street" this song was called "faker", in which ryan sang "you're a faker" and not "i'm a faker". i prefer the early version, although this one has its moments. |

it's a shame that there are so many mistakes in the transcription here. it kinda hides the fact that the lyrics are absolutely tremendous. |

Ryan Adams – Harder Now That It's Over Lyrics

lol jail. - yeah, seems like one of ryan's exes got a new boyfriend and ryan had a bit of a hard time coping with it. --- or maybe we're all wrong, and he's talking about his wiener... think about it: "harder now that it's over"... |

yeah, it did dressed2depress. great description. although, i wouldn't say "modern" life, but just life in general... it's about fear of life, fear of the experiences and feelings it brings along. great comment by xpankfrisst as well btw. |

http://www.archive.org/details/radams2001-11-02.sbd.flac - a great live version where at one point he replaces the words "and cry, cry, cry" by "meg whi-i-ite": would this song really be directed to her?
anyway, sounds like ryan got hurt and he wishes he could've hurt her back.
and btw, doesn't the fourth line say "'cause all i know now from you is grEED"? |

uhm, it's liam singing. i like the repeating of the line "i think i've got a feeling i've lost inside" at the end of the song. no idea what exactly it's supposed to mean, but it's my mantra in times when i'm regaining self-confidence and stability after a dip. if you like songs in this vein, listen to the verve's "a new decade". |

courtney love is charismatic and even talented, but she's VERY much in touch with her satan side. amazing song, nevertheless.
ps, a side note: ("fish":) some people point to the fact that kurt cobain was a pisces - well, billy corgan was one too. ("amethyst":) but okay, he wasn't born in february like kurt but in march. |

Ryan Adams – The Hardest Part Lyrics
|
"the hardest part is loving somebody that cares for you so much"
a fine expression of perhaps life's biggest paradox. the one that makes this world go round and the reason so many people end up heartbroken. if showing another person how super fucking much you love and want them would be enough for that person to fall in love with you back, things would be easy. but that's just not the way it goes. it even works the other way around. |

Ryan Adams – Meadowlake Street Lyrics

it's amazing how ryan adams can incorporate imagery into his lyrics that's mostly used in very cliché ways by other artists - things like the moon, the stars, blabla.. - and actually, by means of a couple of subtle lingual twists, make it all feel really deep and urgent and moving (what adds to this fact too is of course his usual wonderful singing - even though i prefer his voice as heard on faithless street, rock n roll and love is hell). anyway, this greatness is perhaps only matched by the song's masterful musical buildup and the wondrous timbres it fills my ears with hehe. as for the meaning, it seems simple: pondering on and longing back for a past love - either suddenly struck by the memory, or never really having been able to let go of it. probably a mix of both. ;) |

amazing song. i totally agree with imaweirdo on the meaning, and like geeballs14 i can't help but want to comment on the instrumental outro, it's so f'in powerful! gets me every time. those wild distorted guitar attacks with the occasional feedback on that brilliant bassline backed up by the drums work like magic. (making the right facial expressions even deepens the experience of listening to this last minute of the song btw ;)) |

The Dresden Dolls – Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics

isn't this song just about amanda being such a highly evolved and intelligent and experienced woman that she can't find a guy who lives up to her high expectations? which, of course frustrates her, but she also seems to be frustrated because she realizes her expectations may be TOO high. but she keeps hoping finally a "REAL man" will come along that satisfies her every need. someone like me perhaps lol. |

Ryan Adams – This House Is Not for Sale Lyrics

Gimme a break.
I feel like this is a song about loss, about losing someone and the feeling (or the knowledge...) of not being able to do anything about it.
I'd recommend anyone to download it btw, it's a sad and melancholic song, but a truly great one too. |
