Don McLean – Vincent (Starry Starry Night) Lyrics
| 13 years ago

I can't find a single mention of this reference on Google, so I thought I'd post it here for posterity:
The "silver thorn" line is referring to Oscar Wilde's short story "The Nightingale and the Rose", in which a nightingale pierces its heart with the thorn of a rose in order to turn it red, so that a student may give it to a girl he likes. However, the girl rejects him, and the boy angrily throws the rose into the gutter. |

This...song...rocks!
Seems to be about the singer's mistake in coming to a certain place (his career?) and longing for his home. |

Where do you get that interpretation? The only evidence of it I see is in the first two lines and the "gin" segment, but nowhere else... |

New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle Lyrics

Because of the name, I'm inclined to think that this song is about the singer loving someone already in a relationship. This is reinforced further in "I'm waiting for that final moment/You say the words that I can't say," for he can't tell her that he loves her until she breaks up with her significant other. |

Iron Maiden – Out Of The Silent Planet Lyrics

The title is probably a reference to C.S. Lewis's "Out of the Silent Planet". In it, the "silent planet" turns out to be Earth because it does not reply to repeated attempts to communicate with it by other planets. It becomes a symbol of isolation and corruption. |

Gorillaz – 19-2000 Lyrics

This is just a wild stab, but I think this song might be about the debate over pop versus non-pop. Perhaps he's saying that it doesn't really matter which one you listen to, for life is short and both are just fine. The shoes might be a metaphor for music. (Nike vs. "your own shoes") |

Elbow – Red Lyrics

I don't think this is necessarily about drugs, but about a woman who tries to be accepted in others' eyes and fails. A man (the singer) finds her and tries to comfort her by saying that she's perfect the way she is ("Come as you are", "Just as you are perfect"). Perhaps by "dust" settling nerves, threats of death and suicide are implied. |

A beautiful look at Lebanon today. Although I've never been there, this song describes it with unimaginable power. |

Elbow – Powder Blue Lyrics

I agree with aftonbelle. The line "I'm proud to be the one you hold/When the shakes begin" gives most of the meaning away, and the rest can be deduced. In this, Elbow is genius; it creates a wonderfully descriptive mood for its theme with subtly twisted music and singing, drawing us into the numb and perfectly isolated world of a love transformed through addiction.
Don't assume a car crash because of the ending and the booklet quote. Granted, I don't know how they relate to my interpretation either, but I'm sure some thought will get us there. |

Modest Mouse – Float On Lyrics

This song is performed with unbelievable depth. While the lyrics are highly optimistic, the melody and voices have a depressing tone that evicts tears. "Depressing optimism", of course, is a contradiction, but really, this is what the song brings out to me. I guess it's what you feel when something incredibly depressing happens but you convince yourself that life goes on, even if you don't entirely believe it yourself. |
