The Mountain Goats – Have to Explode Lyrics 19 years ago
I think, "Have to Explode," "Old College Try," and "Oceanographer's Choice" were masterfully placed together in that order.

This song, the Alpha male can feel this tension rising inevitably, which finally comes in "Oceanographer's Choice," that is most definitly the explosion. Inbetween the songs we have a calm. "Old College Try" offers a comprimise, in order to try to save themselves from going over the edge. The narrorator's plight doesn't work, thus spousal abuse begins.

The Mountain Goats – The Young Thousands Lyrics 19 years ago
The young thousands are the people that have the same problem of what the narrorator has. Drug addiction, at least that's what I got from it.

"we were the one thing in the galaxy god didn't have his eyes on"

I have never heard a live bootleg of this song without this lyric being changed to "we were the two things in the galaxy..." does that in any sort of way mean that john has a different take on the song. I know sometimes he does change the lyrics when performing them, but that just seems like a powerful move.

I've heard that same shpiel, dagwood. He was doing an introduction to the song "Tallahassee" and described basically all you said and more. It does seem to contradict what you read in the "Protien Source of the Future...Now!" booklet.

"The series known as 'Songs from Alpha Privative' concludes here, having begun at a ski lodge some years earlier. Some deaths just will not be cheated no matter how good you get."

When he was talking about the alpha couple in that live session I heard, he said it started in southern california. I've never been down there more than a week, but I'd imagine it'd be pretty difficult to find a ski lodge in that area.

The Mountain Goats – Riches and Wonders Lyrics 19 years ago
A wonderfully terrible song. Only the last two lines of each verse even clarify how depressing it is. It's about the narrorator, who loves the person he's speaking to, but can never seem to get comfortable with anybody. Hence the "and I want to go home, but I am home." I'm guessing they're married, and he's homesick of course. Homesick of what his life used to be, but he certainly couldn't give up this person he loves with all his heart.

The Mountain Goats – Linda Blair Was Born Innocent Lyrics 19 years ago
Straight from John's mouth:
"It's about your friends who borrow money from you and they say they can use it to fix the car, but what they're actually gonna do is use it to buy speed."

The Mountain Goats – Family Happiness Lyrics 19 years ago
...and by that I meant the whole
"you can arm me to the teeth.
you can't make me go to war."
thing, not the entire song.

I thought that when I first heard the song too, but analysis into the lyrics made me realize it's nothing more than, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

Rush – Grand Designs Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about how the power of talk can bury the things that truly matter, and only bring to light stuff that lacks any depth. Power Windows is such a great album.

Does anybody know if the Alpha series is set in a chronological order and if so, anybody know which goes where? Just in order of release? I've always been curious about that.
