Chumbawamba – Amnesia Lyrics 19 years ago
This song always makes me think of Bowie's Young Americans where he says "Do you remember President Nixon? Do you remember the bills you have to pay? or even yesterday?"

People have to learn from history before they'll be able to change anything.

Chumbawamba – Tubthumping Lyrics 19 years ago
I just listened to it again, and I have to say that it accomplishes the goal very well. To me it says that regardless of the drunken pointlessness your fight seems to have sometimes, if it's worth fighting for then it isn't pointless, and it's worth kicking at it again.

Chumbawamba kinda said this with "Bad Dog" on Anarchy, but this song says it better and it rocks.

Chumbawamba – How to Get Your Band on Television Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a mean-ass song, but as anybody who was there for the "We Are the World" era of band-a-thons, even if you weren't really this aware of it, there was a tangible feeling of weirdness and insincerity permeating the whole mess.

Chumbawamba – Drip, Drip, Drip Lyrics 19 years ago
I love hearing this song because of all the slummy living experiences I've had-- not even by choice and sometimes not even by economic necessity-- sometimes the place is a dump and the landlord a crook no matter what you're paying.

Their reference to the "trickle-down-theory" (voodoo economics) is funny too.

thanks for that tidbit, king nothing2, I always wondered that. Another way (as if the liners you posted didn't explain it all) to understand the song in a little more depth is their collaboration with Negativland "The ABCs of Anarchy." It's funny, in true spirit of both bands, and makes even fans of the band disillusioned with the song view it in another light.

Crass – The Greatest Working Class Rip Off Lyrics 19 years ago
skunkbythebrook, wordy but somewhat true. The song is, I think, not as broad and much more about the Oi! "movement" and the false revolutionary mobilization of the working class that it brought-- more fighting others than fighting the system that oppresses them. Listen to "Hurry Up Garry" (the references in the title being Garry Bushell and "Hurry Up Harry" by Sham 69) for more evidence of Crass's general dislike for the skin movement, and even funnier, Chumbawamba's joke song "I'm Thick" they slipped onto a skinhead music compilation in 86 or so.

Crass – Punk Is Dead Lyrics 19 years ago
damagedgoods, while your anger might be a little unwarranted, I agree with what you're saying. I too, love the Clash, but I wasn't there, and Crass were.

When I first got into punk, people were saying the exact same shit about Green Day, Rancid etc., and now they're saying it again about whoever. So the pattern is there, and I don't think Crass buried punk prematurely. The music biz did that.

I believe that Crass probably knew what they were talking about because they actually HAD a foot to stand on by making it onto TV, in the record shops, etc, by doing it ALL ON THEIR OWN. They are the model for the whole DIY punk scene and that makes them not sacred like some people say, but all-important for sure.

Crass – White Punks On Hope Lyrics 19 years ago
the title is a pun on the Tubes' "White Punks on Dope." Crass shows their sense of humour in strange (and not that funny, more mean) ways sometimes

The Beatles – She Said She Said Lyrics 19 years ago
quote from peter fonda:
"I said to George Harrison, 'I know what it's like to be dead' And John Lennon said to me, 'who put all that sh** in your head-- You know you're making me feel like I've never been born.' I said when I was a boy, I shot myself. It was an accident, and I died on the operating table and I suffered from a massive loss of blood, and I my heart stopped. So I died three times on the operating table."

Lennon's acid-mind at the time most likely associated that with the Tibetan book of the dead stuff that he was reading/putting into lyrics like Tomorrow Never Knows. Interesting stuff.
