I'm not sure this song actually means anything to Mike Patton or FNM, I think towards the end, Patton just put words together that "sounded good". However to me, the title "Ashes to Ashes" is a testament to the end of the band..an I also feel it's a straight up love song about someone who's done wrong, yet the narrator wants them so bad, he will take the blame so he can get to his beau with no hassle or interference. When I first heard Light Years, I immediately thought it was a ode to the fans from the band. Think about it..the band were just ordinary muso's, who were made into stars by the fans. That's underlined throughout the song. The first verse, is about the declining fan base and how Ed maybe preached too much...I mean how often has Ed talked about politics and war to the audience? Probably one of the best tracks off Motel California. Whit told me in person..It went something like: "wagon rolls" - that's his boozing habit. "Another bottle" - beer Whit would drink right thru the night, right up until the sun rose the next day..then.. ...I think the rest of the song is about the band itself...UKJ were flavour of the month, an then they weren't. "where now don't those flavours go"... An Undertow is a current that pulls both ways under the sea, thus making it very hard to get anywhere. i.e. the music biz was very hard to UKJ after their mega hit - Everything Bout You. "We got pulled out by the undertow That's the way the wind blows" Accepting they [the band] were overlooked..and left out in the rain [after a sunny period] also known as the limelight. |
