Don't know where you got that info from floydian. Todd wrote this one. Bruce has a song by the same name, but it's not the same song. |

The Hold Steady – Party Pit Lyrics
|
Craig Finn: "The Party Pit was somewhere I really would go in Minnesota. I don't know if it's there anymore. It was kind of like you'd go back in the woods and there was this big hole, maybe a quarry or something. It certainly wasn't an active quarry, but you could go back there and drink. There were a lot of high school parties there. The cops totally knew about it, though, so the parties would only last like 10 minutes. I'm really a fan of that song. It talks a lot about being evolved in punk rock and hardcore and all that shit but also partying."
It's supposed to be a sort of tribute to Chesterfield King by Jawbreaker.
I really like this song, but it's not my favorite. Still blows away most of new music. |

Black Sabbath – Falling Off The Edge Of The World Lyrics

RACC, I think you're off the mark. Considering "Load" came out about.... 16 years after "The Mob Rules" I'm fairly certain Ante is suggesting Metallica ripped Sabbath off. Not the other way around as you figured. And by the way, this is my fave Sabbath song. Yep, Dio is the man. |

Big Star – Thirteen Lyrics

It's actually called "Thirteen" because that's how old Alex was when he wrote the song. That's what he said on the Live on air album before playing it. |

The Who – Cut My Hair Lyrics

As far as the zoot suit thing goes, you're all correct. But Pete is not referencing any Mexican-Americans or New York City gangsters, it was an outfit some mods used to wear and like babathespider says, is also a reference to The Who's past. Which ya know, is what the whole album is about. |

Stevie Wonder – You Are The Sunshine Of My Life Lyrics
| 17 years ago

I like how the first words Stevie sings in this song (And the whole album) are "I feel like this is the beginning." Alot like Elvis Costello sining "I just don't know where to begin" on Armed Forces lead-off track Accidents Will Happen. |

This is my favorite song from "Songs in the Key of Lif." Obviously shows how America truly was built by people of all races and backgrounds and that we should all drop our troubles and work together. |

I think this part is quite clever:
She is a living fire she is a reason to live
She is killing me burning only for him |

Quadrophenia, the album, was released in 1973.
Tommy, the film, was released in 1975.
Quadrophenia, the film, was released in 1979. Check your dates.
Anyways to sum up the song, Jimmy is reliving memories of his early mod days while taking the train that left at 5:15. |

The White Stripes – The Denial Twist Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
Also in live performances you can obviously tell that it's
So now you're *left*, denying the truth
And it's *hidden* in the wisdom in the back of your tooth
Ya need ta spit it out, in a telephone booth
While ya call everyone that you know, and ask 'em
And I think that the last part should be
You should know that *the doctors weren't kidding*
She's been singing it all along |

The White Stripes – The Denial Twist Lyrics

I think the lyrics for the last part of the first verse is:
"Make sure to never do it with a singer
Cause he'll tell everyone in the world
Whatt he was thinking about the girl
Ya, whatt he's thinking about the girl, oh"
Though I'll admit, I can't find anything to back it up with on lyrics sites. Although it's pretty clear on the Daily show performance. You can download somewhere. Plus it makes more sense. |

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Timorous Me Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
Some corrections..
"but I only know from photographs that I only get every now and again." should be "but I only know from photographs I look at every now and again"
"Telling me" should be "Johnny"
"but my life rolls on just like a death before." should be "but my life rolls on just like it did before"
"just past us by" should be "just passed us by" (Nitpicking i suppose)
Atleast to my ears. |

The Who – Sally Simpson Lyrics

Basically Sally Simpson is a groupie. She's incredibly intrigued by this new star, Tommy. But the only way she can show him is not through devotion, she has to physically touch him. She's a very simple-minded person. |

Sonny Boy Williamson does the original. I really love this song. I mean, how could you not use this song? How many other songs include references to the blind, dumb, and deaf other than a song from Tommy? |

The Who – Happy Jack Lyrics
|
According to some interviews of Townshend this song is about Pete's experiences during vacations at the Isle of man. When he was there a man used to sleep on the beaches. All the children would make fun of the man and at one point actually buried him in the sand. But Pete says he never minded it and just smiled. The man's name might not have been "Jack." Pete just made up the name.

The Who – Bargain Lyrics
|
dukeface is correct. The song is about the sacrifices Pete is will to take to attain the enlightenment of his spiritual leader Meher Baba.
From www.thewho.org: (Pete: "This song is simply about 'losing' one's ego as a devotee of Meher Baba. I constantly try to lose myself, and find him. I'm not very successful I'm afraid, but this song expresses how much of a bargain it would be to lose everything in order to be one with God.") |

The Who – The Real Me Lyrics

An amazing song. The kid is finding that he can't go to anybody to help him with his multipersonality and he's probably just as confused as the doctor, mother and preacher. I think Entwistle should have been knighted for this song. |

The Beatles – Get Back Lyrics

Now something about me is that I always take things literally, I don't look at a ton of songs and say that almost every single rock songs has a hidden meaning about sex, or drugs, or death.
But I have to ask, if the part about California grass has to do with drugs, and not leaving his home to a non-desert enviornment, why go to California? Arizona has a nice, long border along Mexico (for any drug smugglers) and it's not like you can't grow pot in a desert environment. |

Jawbreaker – Basilica Lyrics

It doesn't necessarily have to be about a girl. Sure, he says he wants to ask the person out on a date for the rest of their life, but still. My interpretation is that it's either about the narrator's friend who is having some troubles and is thinking of suicide or about a friend who has some sort of illness that is threatening death. |

Bad Company – All Right Now Lyrics

This is song is actually by Free, and has only been released by Bad Company once. I still like it though. The band (Free) wrote it because they needed an upbeat song to end their sets because their blues rock wasn't energizing enough. |
