Nick Drake – The Thoughts of Mary Jane Lyrics 14 years ago
don't kid yourselves: nick knew full well the implications of the name "mary jane." whether he intended a full-blown metaphor or simply a little nod to marijuana is debatable, but neither is a stretch. after all, the album itself is named after an inscription found on joint papers which served as a heads-up to let people know they were down to their last five.

Operation Ivy – Caution Lyrics 15 years ago
i think antispace is absolutely correct.

skaboss, op ivy didn't write this song to condone or promote drug use-- if anything, it's a warning. it's about someone who wasn't cautious and started taking drugs, and then it got out of hand ("turned around, saw the dog walk me"). then he learns his lesson and offers some advice: "i didn't get it then/ i think i got it now... don't step in the water til you know you can swim".

don't kid yourself; op ivy weren't as deep as you think. they simply wrote very smart, insightful lyrics, often about urban issues. drug abuse is as good a topic as any.

can anybody guess as to what he means by "stainless steel and painted glass"?

The Smiths – Bigmouth Strikes Again Lyrics 15 years ago
As has been said, Morrissey may have made some not-so-well thought-out comments in interviews which he wishes he could take back (hence the "Sweetness, I was only joking" line).

But nobody can take a joke, so Morrissey was burned at the stake, figuratively speaking.

Alkaline Trio – Bleeder Lyrics 15 years ago
I always thought he said, "I'm outta smokes and I wish that I HADN'T."

Add that to the next line and it's this:

"I'm outta smokes and I wish that I hadn't woke up to my daily headache and the realization that you are gone."

As in that, "Why did I even wake up today?" feeling.

There's obviously a break between those two lines, but it's not uncommon for Matt to break his lyrics mid-phrase. Just a though.

Bright Eyes – Old Soul Song (For the New World Order) Lyrics 15 years ago
And Dresdenia... yowza. That's an excellent analysis. I never would have thought of it like that. Makes perfect sense though.

Bright Eyes – Old Soul Song (For the New World Order) Lyrics 15 years ago
He definitely mocks the way people cling to religious dogmas, wishing so bad that they hold some kind of truth. As for the last verse, I've always thought he was just talking about how he gets really unhappy and something comes along that reminds him of the more positive aspects of life.

Dropkick Murphys – The Spicy McHaggis Jig Lyrics 15 years ago
If I'm not mistaken, Spicy was only 17 when Sing Loud, Sing Proud was recorded.

Brand New – I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light Lyrics 16 years ago
"If looks could really kill, then my profession would be staring..."

Now that I think about it, that line doesn't really make much sense. I can kinda see where he's trying to go with that one, but it really doesn't mean much. Is he trying to say he's an assasin-for-hire? I love his lyrics, don't get me wrong, this one just doesn't work.

Morrissey – First Of The Gang To Die Lyrics 16 years ago
"You have never been in love until you've seen the sun rise behind the home for the blind."

that line cracks me up. what a bastard. it sounds like he's speaking from his perspective in that first verse. we all know Morrissey loves his irony, and it sounds like he's expressing that love in those first two couplets.

Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics 16 years ago
"Calm me and let me taste the salt you breathed while you were underneath."
Sounds like he's asking his recently-drowned significant other to come back and comfort him with a kiss. I tend to think of it as Jesse simultaneously taking on the role of the man in the shipwreck and making whatever comparisons to relationships.

Pixies – Levitate Me Lyrics 16 years ago
EDIT: FRANK BLACK is clearly saying it in a mocking tone (just thought I'd clarify).

Pixies – Levitate Me Lyrics 16 years ago
"Come on Pilgrim, you know He loves you" is the catchphrase of Christian folksinger Larry Norman (I believe that was his name), the "He" being God or Jesus or whoever. He's clearly saying it in a mocking tone, like "you're all suckers for believing this shit."

Thursday – Ian Curtis Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, Ian and his wife had a rocky relationship. He had a pretty open affair with another woman. For all you Joy Division noobs, Ian Curtis is the guy from Interpol's dad.

And I don't believe he did drugs, but he had epilepsy, which would often leave to seizures on stage, depression, breakdowns. It's really too bad. I don't have much pity for rock and roll casualties, but he really must have had a hard life, seeing as it wasn't caused by drug addiction, but something out of his control; a mental illness, if you will.

At the Drive-In – 300 Mhz Lyrics 16 years ago
^For the last time, it's not a different language, it's backwards (although it does sound like he's speaking in tongues).

Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics 16 years ago
It's funny how they take a song that's clearly about drugs and oral sex and wrap it up in such a pretty package so that the meaning goes virtually unnoticed to the casual listener.

Third Eye Blind – Graduate Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe the guy didn't graduate from high school or college and it's really holding him back in life.

Third Eye Blind – Losing a Whole Year Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm thinking it's about a couple who's relationship was based almost entirely on sex. The girl is a sheltered rich kid with a false sense of reality ("now you touch everything with a velvet glove") who's interested in trying a life of sin and begins using the guy for sexual purposes. Now the novelty and excitement has worn off and the relationship is just a bore ("Now we're stuck with the tube/A sink full of dishes and some aqua LUBE").

Alkaline Trio – Settle For Satin Lyrics 16 years ago
^Well said. I've seen lots of people give up their pursuit of a dream simply because they are offered another option that seems more convenient. I'm not too sure about the title though. I could see why you might have to settle for a cheaper fabric or something, but satin sounds pretty good to me. Any ideas?

Alkaline Trio – Smoke Lyrics 16 years ago
i believe the chorus is "i wish i didn't wish that i still smoked". when i first picked up the album, i was hoping this was an acoustic track (blue in the face was a breath taking way to end good mourning), but i really ended up enjoying this song. a short and sweet offering from danny. his songs always tend to use less distortion than matts and more of a twangy, clean guitar sound.

Alkaline Trio – Clavicle Lyrics 16 years ago
"i saw what looked like really good food, than i saw ya and so did you" eh? any ideas?

Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life Lyrics 16 years ago
yeah, i think the thing that allows people to identify so readily with this song is just its simple sincerity. the lyrics are nothing too extravagant, but he conveys his emotions in a very honest, direct way. i really admire that about his music, just that stripped-down integrity. you can just feel it.

submissions
Sublime – Don't Push Lyrics 16 years ago
i think by "we don't want no plastic" he means "we don't want any of that fake shit". in other words, he prefers organic reefer over man-made crack.

Matt Skiba – Next To You Lyrics 16 years ago
i'm sensing a little double entendre here. isn't a colt forty-five also a shot of heroin? man, skiba and his drug references...

Alkaline Trio – We've Had Enough Lyrics 16 years ago
i have to say, of all the alkaline trio songs new and old, lyrically this flows the nicest. skiba's rhymes are tight, man.

Alkaline Trio – Madam Me Lyrics 16 years ago
just the fact that he calls himself "madam me" always cracks me up.

Alkaline Trio – Nose Over Tail Lyrics 16 years ago
in the milk magazine interview, skiba talks about how nose over tail was just this completely cheesy, tongue-in-cheek love song he wrote for kicks. heh, what a cynical bastard.

"whatever happened to that silly dream you had? i want to make it real. i'd love to rub your back."

simply immortal.

i do believe the drum riff was sampled from james brown's "funky drummer". i'm guessing mushroom tea is some psychadelic mushroom type drug?

Incubus – Just A Phase Lyrics 17 years ago
has anyone seen the morning view sessions dvd? brandon sings the "womens intuition" line with the biggest smirk on his face. maybe he's poking fun at his own sexuality?

Brand New – Okay I Believe You, but My Tommy Gun Don't Lyrics 17 years ago
come on guys. this song isn't an ode to jesse's ego. it's called tongue-in-cheek humor.

Sublime – Boss DJ Lyrics 17 years ago
Kozmic Tequila-

that is a perfect interpretation. you obviously know a thing or two about the man. brad never truly enjoyed being an addict (after all, who does?), he just got sucked into a trap that he, amongst others, could not esacpe

The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead Lyrics 17 years ago
"So I broke into the Palace
with a sponge and a rusty spanner
she said: "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said: "that's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

i've never quite understood this line. why does he break into the palace with a sponge and a rusty spanner? and the humor behind the queen's comment and morrissey's reply. is there something i'm missing or is it just supposed to be kinda silly?

The Smiths – William, It Was Really Nothing Lyrics 17 years ago
yeah, it's supposedly about Billy Mackenzie of the Associates with whom Morrissey had a relationship. Billy's friend Alan Rankine wrote a song called "Steven, It Was Really Something", thus came Morrissey's strikingly similar parody, "William, It Was Really Nothing".
