Kienapp, I can answer your question. Ben Folds Five was the band led by Ben Folds. (They were a trio, btw.) Ben, Robert Sledge & Darren Jesse. Now Ben Folds is solo plus working on lots of other projects. I looked over the song lists on here; a lot of the songs in the BF Five list are actually from his solo work. John McCrae sings with him on Rockin' The Suburbs, too, not just the live version. I Love how at the end of the live one Ben says "John McCrae of CAKE y'all" That cracks me up.
This song was what got me listening to Ben Folds, simply because we found out that John was on the album & we're huge fans of CAKE. We listened to RTS & got hooked on Ben, too.
Oh, and by the way, this song & a few others I noticed in BFF song list are not Five, but Ben Folds Solo. Either way this song is great & Ben Folds Rocks!! |

The main lyric is straightforward. It's the chorus that leaves you scratching your head. The Mastodon is a now extinct relative of the elephant; hmm how does that relate to a skyrise apartment & cutting swatches from material? I'm not sure even John has an answer for that one. |

"pretty pink ribbon" ... "sticky little kitten" ... "tight little denim" It's definitely about a female getting away with stuff & getting advantages simply because of being female. I think the ticket reference is more about not receiving traffic tickets than being given free tickets.

Could this refer to Male anatomy?
I don't think the cancer reference is literal; John doesn't write like that. I think the cancer is some unnamed personal flaw.
And what about "lift this steaming herd ... kill all the sick ones ... bury them deep in the earth" ? Is this referring to male responsibility; men having to do the unpleasant physical tasks? And the idea that because of her frailness & femininity she's excused from these hardships. |
