Drake – Successful Lyrics 12 years ago
Songz told MTV News about his involvement in the song "Drake told me back in January he was gonna do another mixtape. At first, he was calling me about interludes and trying to segue his singing into his rapping. That didn't work out, because we couldn't come to terms about what records I was going to be on. Then he sent me this track one night. I was in the studio when he sent it. He said, 'Let me know what you think about it.' It was simplistic, but it knocks. It's eerie, it's dark. The first thing I laid down was the gothic, reverb-driven harmony: 'arrrgh, arrrgh, arrrgh.' I couldn't think of what I wanted to hear on it, so I did a whole bunch of harmonies."

Songz then came up with the hook: He remembered: "The first thing that came to mind was 'I want the money, money and the cars/ Cars and the clothes/ The ho's/ I suppose I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful.' When I'm saying all that, conceptually for me, the deepest part of the record was when I say, 'I suppose.' I supposed that's what success is about. That's what [we're] led to believe."

Drake recalled: "I opened it up in my e-mail, and I heard this hook, and it was so powerful to me, because he says all these things: 'I want the money, money and the cars.' And it's like, it's almost like it made me feel like it may not be right what I want, you know? All these things, it's like it made me feel young. It kind of made me feel ignorant to the game. But it was an exciting record even though the tempo is slow. That's what I want. That's what I've been told is success: 'The money, the cars, the clothes and the ho's. I suppose.' The 'I suppose' moment in there is like, it's almost like you're doubting yourself for a second. But at the end of the day, I just want to be successful. So that's what the record meant to me."

Drake explained to MTV News the lyric, "My mother tried to run away from home, but I left something in the car, so I caught her in the driveway. And she cried to me, so I cried too/ And my stomach was soaking wet, she's only 5'2." He said: "When I was going through the creative process for So Far Gone, I was actually at a pretty dark place in my life. It was a frustrating time for my family, because my grandmother – who is now in her mid- to late 90s – was just losing it. It was hard for my mother to watch. And it was just, it was really at a point where it was like, 'Is this rap thing going to work?' Like, 'Is this my choice? Is this what I am committing to?' Money was an issue. Degrassi [which Drake starred on as a teen] had ended years ago, and we were just all kind of trying to figure stuff out.
So my mother was going through a rough time. And yeah, man, one night she just broke down and tried to actually run away from the house, tried to leave it all behind. It was just a lot going on, and she never would have really left. She would've always come back, but it was just a frustrating moment for her. So I had forgot something in my car, and I came outside and I saw bags sitting by her car. I saw her out there, and she just started crying right away when she saw me. Anyway, I don't wanna get too emotional, but I had to hug her. My father doesn't stay with us, so I had to be security for her and just let her know that everything is going to be all right."

Songs mean something different to every listener; however, here is Drake's explanation....

Drake wrote the bulk of the lyrics after Trey Songz came up with the hook. In an interview with Complex Blog, Drake explains: "It's basically a story. It starts in January 2008 when I was kinda confused like, What am I really doing? I gave up acting all together to really do this music thing, and I was really truly confused. It's way different than acting, there aren't people to depend on, you really have to build your own thing basically from the ground up, you know, so in January not only was I confused about my career, I was also in a very destructive sort of us exhausting relationship with a female and it was just a bad headspace for me to be in. So that's where the tape starts. I just felt that nothing was ever good enough, and she was always searching for more excitement and then we move into “Successful.” I say at the end of the song, “There are so many things I want to say but I just don't know how to say it to you.” I know exactly what I want to say, you know, I just want to be successful, but I don't know if I can do it with you and then it goes into “Let's Call It Off,” which is the breakup."

The Subways – Strawberry Blonde Lyrics 13 years ago
I saw somewhere that it was about his new girlfriend, but then I read that he said the following in an article:

“That song is also about me feeling guilty over what I think I put Charlotte through in our relationship, and also realising that for a long time I wouldn’t be anything without her.”

Here is the whole article: http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv-entertainment/film/film-reviews/2008/06/12/the-subways-return-after-with-new-album-after-billy-lunn-s-op-and-split-89520-20604942/

Sometimes things have duel meanings...who knows...

I saw them play a live version of this on "Live From Abbey Road", on the Sundance Channel. It's even better than the version on the album.

Mark Ronson – Stop Me Lyrics 14 years ago
I forgot to add this part to my initial post, so here it is. The final verse of this song is actually an addition. It is not in the original version.

Set me free, why don't you babe?
Get out my life, why don't you babe?
'Cause you don't really love me, no
You just keep me hanging on.

This could be interpreted as the girl whois beaten saying this to the drunken boyfriend who beats her. Maybe tired of this cycle and feeling he doesn't truly love her, she wants out of this but lacks the strength to get out of it. She feels like she has to be in this? She keeps hanging on?

Mark Ronson – Stop Me Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm not a huge fan of Mark Ronson's work in general, but because of the way he mixed this music and the addition of vocals from Daniel Merriweather, it's by far the best thing he's done to date. Personally, I like the original version by The Smiths much more. Maybe that is because orginals are normally better anyways, not sure.

This song is about love within a violent relationship. The girl is beaten by the guy beats everytime he gets drunk, resulting with her in the hospital. The hospital trips happen repeatedly (refer to the line "Friday night in Out-patients"), and the doctors are lied to about her injuries each time(refer to the line "Oh, who said I'd lied ? - because I never, I never"). Despite this all of this happening, she loves him "only slightly less" than she used to.

Morrissey(from The Smiths) is a notorious feminist. This song was written to make a statement and movtivate individuals to report domestic violence and stand up for themselves.

My favorite part of this song is:
I crashed down on the crossbar
And, the pain was enough to make
A shy, bald, buddhist reflect, and plan a mass murder

It's an interesting description of pain and very vivid.

Do listen to the original version if you get the opportunity. It is well worth it.

Levy – Rotten Love Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with Milkman82.

This song:
is in a minor key
has pleasant sound that is "really nice" (to me Regina is the melody)
is somewhat disheartening lyricaly(or at least for James)

Actually, a couple of my friends are named Regina and James..the song really fits them in a way. Maybe that is why I like it so much. Regardless, I enjoy this song.

Cary Brothers – Ride Lyrics 15 years ago
I hate saying that I completely agree with someone on their comment; however, I agree with diellenicole. I'm not sure I could have put it better myself. The meaning behind really is deep on many levels. All the elements of this song tie together so perfectly. The opening lyric really strikes me: "You are everything I wanted, The scars of all I'll ever know."

[Chorus - Timbaland, Magoo, Sebastian]
I got my eyes on you
*my King…*
Baby, let me tell you that you are the truth
*you are my King…*
I love your Indian flute
*my King…*
Oo, da-da, oo, da-da, oo da do
Sing it 2 me
*every since I met you*-
Sing it 2 me
*I have been in love with you*-
Sing it 2 me
*If I kiss you once, what could happen?*
But I can't understand a word you sayin!!?

[Timbaland (& Raje)]
*It’s very hard for you to resist me now…*
Baby, I been eyein’ you way from afar
*I see everything in your eyes…*
Thanks 4 the props, but 2 me, you the star,
*Why do you always forget about me* (?)
Let's get it on tonite, why wait 4 tomorrow,
*C'mon Timmy, show me how bad you are*
Timbaland in Hindi: Come here beautiful, I’ve been lovin’ you, oh!

[Chorus]

[Magoo (& Raje)]
*Now tell me what I should do next*
Baby, you sure, you wanna sleep next 2 Moo,
when it's 3 of us on the TV it's kung-fu,
f*** around with a N—and dump on top of you,
*Life is just about suffering*
U ain't the first, best believe,
fo' sho', there's been a few
*C'mon Magoo, because I'm feelin’ you*
Magoo in Hindi: Come here beautiful, I’ll do it again, oh!

[Chorus]

[Sebastian (& Raje)]
*Take me in your arms…*
Don't slow, and I'll direct your every move,
like a young Benny Boom,
after beatin’ up your womb,
no need to put on perfume,
baby girl, you leavin’ soon
*Sometime, my dear, you have to come closer to me*
Nobody gotta know your thong was maroon,
*I am yours…*
Ya know, after creepin out my room
*You are mine…*
Just so your man don't assume,
sing it to ‘em
*Ever since we met each other…*
Sing it 2 ‘em
*Since then we’ve been crazy in love…*
Sing it 2 ‘em
*And we’re lost in insanity…*
*If I kiss you once, what could happen?*

[Chorus]

Imogen Heap – The Moment I Said It Lyrics 16 years ago
instead of:
It’s not even like that…but you’ve somewhere to be.
&
It's not even like that.

it's actually:
It's not even light out but you've somewhere to be.
&
It's not even light out.

anyways: really awesome song to end the album with. one of my favorites from it.

song is about something being wrong between two people and in their relationship. one is walking out with the car keys to leave(somewhat abrutly, i gather) and the other is asking them to stop and just talk to them. the one leaving is ready to throw it all away, while the other is scared and willing to work everything out. they convinced things will seem better if they just sleep or talk about it in the morning after sleep.

Foo Fighters – Aurora Lyrics 17 years ago
I have always loved this song.....There is just something about it. It is so peaceful and peaceful. My favorite line from this song is at the start of this song. When he sings

"I just kinda died for you
You just kinda stared at me"

The line itself is really awesome. It makes me thing about when you do something for someone and they just start at you as if not acknowledging what you have done. No matter what it means....It is my favorite line in the song. I think the way Dave Grohl sings it just makes it even more beautifull.

I am thinking some one has passed on and 'the clincher' is that instead of this person being the one....it should be the other guy.

It's a great opening track. The rest of the CD is great too. I am an intern at a radio station and have heard the new cd already. It will blow you away. People don't download the new cd.....JUST GO BUY IT! Support the band. They are worth it!!!!

The Postal Service – Such Great Heights Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is amazing. To me it is about two people that totally connect in every way. They connect and it just transends them. They are on a different level or on some high because of this deep connection. From where they are the world/life is perfect. They never want to come down or leave where they are because for them....it couldn't get any better.

That is just one outlook on it. I am sure there are other thoughts.

I love the way the feelings/thoughts are described in this song. I had never thought about "the freckles in our eyes" before. The lyrics are great, and I can't stop listening to. I have had the CD for over a year and its just as good as the first time i heard it.
