Tegan and Sara – His Love Lyrics
|
I'm can only assume that you (commenters) are referring to Augusten Burroughs? I read Running With Scissors awhile back and it sounds like the same guy... the lyrics make sense. Also I don't know of any other writers named Augusten. If so, that's very cool that he has a relationship with Tegan and Sara.
Also, to the last comment... I don't belive the fact that he's gay has anything to do with it, as the lyrics are about his relationship with his FATHER. |

David Byrne & Brian Eno – Strange Overtones Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
I like to think this is how Brian Eno and David Byrne started collaborating (*disclaimer, I know that is not the case, I'm just pretending) - Both artists had their hey day 20-30 years ago, so the lyrics add up. David heard Brian experimenting with beats in the next apartment, and came up with the chorus, and great music was born!
Seriously though, I think it's a pretty straightforward song about living next to a musician you respect... if you're finding deep life metaphors in these lyrics, I think you're looking too hard. |

Modest Mouse – You're the Good Things Lyrics

it's awesome to find so many amazing metaphors in one song... most bands will come up with one great line and build the rest of the song around it with filler. not modest mouse- almost every song is lyrically perfect. |

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #2 (Laika) Lyrics
| 16 years ago

Listening to this song this morning for the first time since having seen Into the Wild about a month ago, the lyrics totally hit me as definitely being about Chris McCandless. It's such an inspiring story, I'm certain this isn't the only song written about him and his life. Funny how this song makes sense to me now. |

Feeling Left Out – Rocky Dennis Lyrics
|
i hope you guys know what that quote is from- it's a movie called Mask from 1985. the main character, Rocky Dennis, is physically deformed. it's based on a true story... and it's a great film. i can't say for sure the rest of the lyrics are about Rocky but it definitely adds to the story. |

Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear Lyrics
|
i'm just getting into joanna newsom, but immediately what came to mind when reading the title was a childhood i-spy book called "Each Peach Plum Pear" which featured storybook characters. joanna's music feels like it belongs in a storybook, so it's undeniable that the line is a throwback to the book. |

Minus the Bear – El Torrente Lyrics

i don't think a detective would be told to "take note" of such things if there weren't foul play involved, and i don't think he'd feel so strongly about it, it seems there was innocence taken away in this scenario, and i just don't see that happening with someone falling from a tree. maybe she was trying to escape someone and tried to climb up a tree? |

The Thrills – Big Sur Lyrics

i moved back in with my parents in the country for several months, and they liked having me there. as i packed up my car to move back to the city, they hugged me goodbye and said they wished i wouldn't go. i got in my car and this song was playing. ("baby baby please don't go" / "letting your old man down" / "so much for the streetlights, they're never going to guide you home") kinda creepily fitting. |

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics
| 18 years ago

responses to other posts on the topic:
1. 4-H reference isn't necessarily a glance back to childhood... as we've established the narrator is young, and personally I was one of many active 4-H members until graduating high school. Although I can't recall anything involving a stone of any sort, it could very well be an award -- perhaps for a floral exhibit involving goldenrod? County fairs often take place in August, when goldenrod would be in bloom, and 4-H would play a large role in that small-town experience.
2. Someone said the character is more likely to be a male when referencing that the shirt is tucked in: in the time period that Sufjan was growing up, girls tucked our shirts in often.
3. Cardinal hitting the window doesn't necessarily have to be symbolic. Birds fly into windows often... it may have more to do with the imagery than symbolism.
4. I read that Sufjan did a lot of research on the states before writing his albums, reading about the lives of their residents, and drawing off of this research to develop creative ideas for his songs. Nothing indicates that this story is rooted in his own life. That's the mark of a brilliant songwriter... to write not necessarily about that which personally affects you, but to tell a story from your imagination that touches our hearts. |

Kings of Convenience – Love Is No Big Truth Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
"do I have to be like them, or be lonely?" --society revolves around love, and maybe it's not the big deal that everyone makes it out to be. it's no big truth, it's just our genes. so why should i be like the rest of the world just to escape lonliness? |

it's not about love; it's about getting to know someone. you may not have much in common/anything to talk about, but you can still hit it off and have a good time if you're dancing...

Talking Heads – This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
home is less of a place and more of a concept, oftentimes idealized. when the tangible experience of home is not present, a search is made for a suitable replacement, and this can be found in a person. there's no place like home, and sometimes when you are with something warm and familiar in an otherwise unfamiilar environment, it can be the best form of love. |

Pixies – Trompe Le Monde Lyrics

my favorite pixies song. i think that "trompe le monde" is an art movement... you know, the one where they give paintings a 3D effect by painting a fake frame with something on it, like a bird or flower. |

The movie Pumpkin, with Christina Ricci, uses this song so well I almost thought it was written for it. Ricci's character teaches a retarded boy in a blue velour jumpsuit discus for Special Olympic training and, in a way, 'liberates' him. Well, you'd have to see it. Anyway, good use of a brilliant song in a brilliant film. |

It's more about everything going so well, that you know it can't keep going on like that forever, so take it all in, don't take anything for granted, but make your moves carefully because you never know what's coming next.

Mirah – Telephone Wires Lyrics

I was still in love with my ex, and we were still "together" in a sense, but he was hung up on some girl in Germany and went to visit her. I knew when he got back that I wanted to solidify things, either we were officially back together, or it was over completely. During this time I first heard Mirah, and specifically fell in love with this song that matched up 100%. |

I take this song at face-value. "Ahh, I see you have pollen on your nose. You must have been out picking flowers, that's cute. Now let's be happy in love and possibly sexual, cause I like love in the afternoon, now let's go play in the garden. La."

Radiohead – Knives Out Lyrics

I always thought from the video that it was about a tumultuous relationship dying, and looking back on it. For instance, watching the scene on the train where they use different weapons (hurting each other) and then he proposes. Almost a likeness to "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
It may make references to cannibalism, but I really think it's an analogy, not the point of the song. |
