Kurt Vile – Peeping Tomboy Lyrics
|
I think "peeping tom" is a way of addressing the dangerous side of having an inquisitive and skeptical nature. Looking into things he knows he shouldn't but can't help himself. The rest of the songs talks about a longing for something undefinable that he seems to search for, sometimes in wrong places. Perhaps when he met this girl, he got into trouble by spying on her? |

Something that came together quickly and passionately ("with a burning paper heart") but without sustainability and has reached the limit of its capacity to stay together ("about to bust apart"). |

Osker – Anchor Lyrics

mimickid, you're confusing "idle" with "idol".
The phrase "idle will kill", I take to be very meaningful. I think of it as a philosophy to live by, basically: if you stand still; if you stop trying, let the world pass you by; it will ultimately destroy you. |

Right on, pawnshop trash, I just recently went through a broken up engagement, and this song has adopted all new meaning. I have a similar reaction to this song, as well as "for want of". |

Hot Water Music – Choked and Separated Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
There is so much I want to say about this song right now... it fits my current situation to a T.
Basically, it's about being impatient towards not knowing where two people stand in a relationship. The other person is not ready to commit, and the singer is promising that there's nothing that could have already ruined their relationship, and there's nothing that could ruin it in the future, if the other person is willing to invest in the relationship what the singer already has. As things are now, they are just slowly drifting apart and this song is a plea to keep that from happening. |

The Dismemberment Plan – Secret Curse Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
Here I am, as I always am, to put fit these lyrics with my own situation...
I see this as coming from someone who is experiencing a day (or several days) of absolute unsuredness ("screwed if I live, screwed if I die" "I don't know what sin I have not confessed" "I don't know what else I can do"). It's like when you get in one of those situations where you try and try to fix a problem with someone who is new to you ("I don't know who you are") when you probably shouldn't be trying so hard, but instead you try to say and do too much, and are left hopeless (""I don't know what else I can do.. please, please, I'm sorry" "and I really do try to run that fast and long but it gets there first" "I'm nervous and lost and I can not refrain") So basically, they are going through a very emotional time, and are trying to simultaneously start a serious relationship with someone, and are putting everything they have into this relationship, thinking it will be the answer to their emotional stress ("and I'm losing my friends as we're getting along") when in reality, the emotional stress is taking its toll on the relationship, and their only solution is to try harder and harder... which only makes things worse.
On the good side, this song does seem to serve as recognition of the situation, and also seem to be their plea for forgiveness for their actions "please... please.. I'm sorry." A great song about venting emotional stress and expressing a need for forgiveness. |

Gregory and the Hawk – Neither Freer Lyrics
| 16 years ago

See, I don't see this as a "getting over someone" song at all. I see it as a "new love" kind of song... maybe they both have just gotten over breakups, but the "tangled in fear" line to me is about not wanting to rush into a relationship, and "neither of us freer" because their new relationship with each other allows each of them to be freer than they were in their previous relationships... |

Her Space Holiday – You And Me Lyrics
|
As I often do, I'm attributing this song to my current situation.
This girl and I have both just recently met and got swept up in each other... we're both coming off of relationships, but don't want either to be a "rebound" and feel something powerful in our connection.
We are both in awe at the kindness of gentleness of each other... I don't know if it's what either of us were looking for, but are glad we found.
The "in a dream" verse kind of fits what we both are wanting and are kind of going through in reality as well. We've met a couple times this past weekend, and each of us has felt that we're just moments away from falling for each other, we're just waiting for the other to say something.
In the end, this song has an openness about it... especially the "so here we are" part. In my situation, neither of us is ready to commit fully to what we've started, and neither of us is sure that we're right to be in something long-term right now... but what we are doing and the time we spend together feels so right. |

The Futureheads – Decent Days And Nights Lyrics

I agree with yowza as well.
I have always viewed this song as something directed at the listener... like, some songs are the kind of things you would say to someone else, but this is a song who you have to listen to yourself.
I just broke up with my fiancee... and listening to this song helps me realize that I need to work things out, on my own and with her, to get back to where we were. |

Stars – Calendar Girl Lyrics

Maybe it's just part of my tendency to relate any song I hear to my personal problems, but I take this song as being about a relationship fight.
"if I am lost for a day/try to find me/but if I don't come back/then I won't look behind me"
I think this means that the person is having doubts about the relationship, and wants the other person to kind of show them a way they can work things out. However, if it turns out there's no way they can work things out, then the first person must admit that their relationship can't be saved, and they must move on.
"all of the things I thought were so easy/just got harder and harder each day"
If they live together, then going through all the same routines, seeing each other every day; these things would get harder and harder if one person was doubting the relationship, and subconsciously wanted out.
Unfortunately, I can't get too much along those lines from the rest of the song, but I thought it'd be nice to share my views.
Now if only I can work out my personal problem... |

I didn't know that part about his daughter being named Alabee, though it does make sense of the one part of the song I didn't fully understand.
Regardless, me and my future wife were planning to put this as a first track on a CD that we'll give out at our wedding. |

Rites of Spring – For Want Of Lyrics

I disagree with the whole "reflecting on a previous relationship" aspect.
I can see a reflection in my current relationship. I have had several attempts at relationships that never really worked, yet I still had put a lot of emotion in them, and sometimes still wonder what might have been. I think it's the fact that the relationship I'm in now is so amazing, that I feel like it might not be real, and I reflect on what might have been if it had never happened. In this way, it's my "want of" my girlfriend that sometimes blinds me from now real that love is.
But what do I know, I have a bad habit of twisting lyrics around to suit whatever situation I'm currently in. |

Elliott – Superstitions In Travel Lyrics

I don't see this song as sad, I think it is more hopeful.
A long distance relationship that no one thought would work, perhaps even themsleves. But, even as more and more time is spent apart, they both still believe they will be together one day.
Consequently, is fits the relationship I'm in. And with all the cliche surrounding it, this song is beautiful to me. |

The Postal Service – Such Great Heights Lyrics

You wannabe indie-hipster/scenesters don't really know that much, do ya? Iron and Wine did a cover of this song for the single, which also has a cover by The Shins and the unreleased song "there's never enough time." And I just got that off Interpunk! You guys sound like such big fans, I figure you'd have all this stuff memorzied, much less purchased for yourself.
But I digress.. this is a damn good song. Reminds me why I should always hesitate before I diss pop music. |

The Who – My Generation Lyrics

And I always thought the stutters were just a display of the angsty feelings shared by the band and its fans. In an era where happy melodic rock 'n' roll was as abrasive as music got, singing out of rhythm and with distaste for the older generation seemed like one of the earliest forms of rebellious music. The style became more widespread once ground was broken and less-than-conventional singing was attempted.
This is only my personal opinion, with no research to support it, it is completely possible that it's wrong, and joeyjoejoeshabadoo has come the closest to providing some real evidence. |

The Dismemberment Plan – Gyroscope Lyrics

No, I'm sure they've realized the instruments stopped, and are probably singing louder because they can be heard.
As for the song, it certainly is a work of art. A pretty straight-forward song about the effects of going out night after night trying to find love but only getting your heart broken. |

Crass – Punk Is Dead Lyrics

I think one of the greatest things a band can do is call bullshit on everyone else. Kinda like what Cursive did recently with the 'emotional rock' label. It's almost hard to believe punk is dead the way Crass seems to portray it so strongly. I do completely agree with this song. Some of the most quotable lyrics ever. |

"I could be wrong, but wasn't that the point of Conor creating Bright Eyes, so he didn't have to play with a set band?"
I don't think so, because Bright Eyes has been around since '95 but Desaparecidos didn't form until recently (Read Music Speak Spanish was released in '01, so they probably weren't around much before then) |

Desaparecidos – Manana Lyrics

"Who are these two guys talking anyway?"
the 'I did' guy is obviously Conor, and I assume the other guy is his friend.
And, for the record, I believe these are some of his most poetic lyrics. With the rest of the album being an attack on consumerism and political outcrys, this is a powerful emotional song that to me symbolizes a strong belief that tomorrow (as the title states) and every tomorrow after that we (someone he loves?) can create a beautiful future that no one will be able to destroy. |

Conor really does an amazing job on this song. You can really tell how much he abhors war with his sarcastic "I wanna fight in the war" screams, which to me are some of his best, and most emotional. I would love to hear this song live. |
