he's said before that he wrote this song for his father, who died during the recording of A New Day at Midnight. i think a lot of the depression and melancholy one feels after losing a loved one is conveyed throughout the album, but this song in particular strikes me as a plea for an escape from intense emotion |

i was very surprised that no one had commented on this song before! its basically about how shallow and lazy the world and especially our generation has become- money and material-obsessed, but too lazy to come up with any original ideas. he also focuses on the extreme apathy that is characteristic of many people, and that they don't care about anyone or anything than themselves. because of these bad qualities, he warns against the moral and intellectual demise of the generation, as a bird with no wings cannot escape the cat hunting it. |
