Cold War Kids – Mine Is Yours Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I agree with what jbee said. Building on it a bit, I think this is a relationship moving past those 'dream' stages of the beginning where you're making out in the car all summer and dealing and helping each other with real problems. "Realistic love runs out of room." There comes a point where realism has to replace idealism in a relationship. He can promise the sun and moon to her, but he doesn't own them, they come out when they want to. Idealism can get in the way of realistic love so that it runs out of room. The last verse is piercing honesty. This song is a very mature definition of love. |
The Tragically Hip – Are We Family Lyrics | 14 years ago |
If I understand this verse right, I think it is being sarcastic and making a social comment on how effed up the world has become. Gord writes, 'Taking care of each other'- and how do we do that? 'One bullet to another.' I wouldn't want that referring to how I take care of my friends. There's nothing very tender about this verse or the song in general. It's a very bleak but realistic outlook on the sad state of affairs existing in the world today. It's not 'We are family,' but rather 'Are we family?' Or, as Gord introduced it once, 'Here's a song that's more interrogative than declarative..' |
Devotchka – Dearly Departed Lyrics | 14 years ago |
'Flesh of my flesh' is what Adam says in Genesis 2:23 in reference to Eve, the first marriage. It's commonly quoted in Christian weddings. It goes along with the next verse in Genesis, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his mother, and the two will become one flesh.' I think it's pretty hard to ignore that this is a lament over an ex-lover. Quotes like, 'Darling,' 'When you were mine,''I know you had no choice,' along with the Flesh of my flesh I just explained it's pretty obvious that it's not a family member. |
Our Lady Peace – Blister Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Raine has never really written about relationships or breaking up" Are you for real? I agree not as often as the average songwriter does, but certainly relationships are part of everyday life and it would require more effort than it's worth not to write about them now and again. |
The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Manic Depression Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Who would want to have sex with music rather than women? Jimi is not saying that at all. What he's saying is that music is his outlet for when everything else has got him down. Despite this, music doesn't have the sweet caress of a woman. We know that babies become sick and die when they are not held enough or shown enough TLC. Music, although powerful, important and comforting to Jimi, cannot provide him with one of mankind's necessities: human contact. |
Dave Matthews Band – Proudest Monkey Lyrics | 16 years ago |
lol. This song brings me back to 1998 when I was in 4th grade and finally given a "cool" album for Christmas. Dad never allowed DMB because of sexual connotations. So I can remember falling asleep to this song in my Grandma's house 9 years ago. Thanks to the 1% of people who came to this site and read my post. |
Broken Social Scene – Fire Eye'd Boy Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I agree with Dropbeat about the Columbia bit. I think it's a very personal song, could be about blazing trees since your eyes turn read, giving people the slip to continue your habit. And then maybe dealing with the consequences of this by getting your ass whipped. PS I think tatters up there is smoking chronic too, because Hitler? wtf with these conspiracies. |
John Mayer – New Deep Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think this is the "sarcasm" Cause ever since I tried Trying not to find Every little meaning in my life It's been fine I've been cool With my new golden rule "fine" and "cool" are the most unconvincing adjectives he could've used here. Do you really believe John would advocate "trying not to find every little meaning in life"?? C'mon people.. he's saying a lot of people do that, they don't care where they came from or what everything means; they're self-serving pleasure-seekers. |
The Tragically Hip – Scared Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yes, I mean World War II. Wonderdog, Gord often introduces it with "Dad's job that became obsolete" which seems almost sympathetic, which I don't think he would be to the sly politicians or the media. PS I'm fighterandlover from the forums. If you like the hip, I recommen http://hipbase.com/forum |
Dave Matthews – Grey Blue Eyes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't think it's about God, because God doesn't necessarily have Grey Blue Eyes. I don't think it can be about a death either, since the speaker begs them to not "Forget my broken heart." Also, since he can't find himself in their grey blue eyes (the eyes would be closed if they were dead). |
Relient K – Let It All Out Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't think the religious theme of this song can be denied; anyone who denies it doesn't know anything about Christianity. "And today I will trust you with the confidence Of a man who's never known defeat And I'll try my best to just forget That that man isn't me" Christ is the man who's never known defeat. Never been defeated by sin. 'That man isn't me.' We cannot by our own thinking or choosing pay for our sins, only he can. 'Hearing what I did' is God pointing out all of the speaker's many sins. AND to the people saying "I wish they weren't religious," that's the most ridiculous comment ever! Certainly Relient K would not have written a song as this or be who they are WITHOUT religion, they may not even be a band today. Grow up people, don't hate religion just to jump on a bandwagon. Appreciate how Relient K has embraced their religion and set it out there in a much more people-friendly form. |
The Tragically Hip – Fiddler's Green Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Correction: this song had never been sung live until 2006. |
The Tragically Hip – Daredevil Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Good explanation, IvoKent, I couldn't have said it better meself. I'd just like to emphasize one of my favourite clever lyrics from the song: "I'll be short and brief and to the point." That wasn't short/brief/to the point at all! ROFLCAKERZOMG |
The Tragically Hip – Toronto #4 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree with you, BamSplat. But I think you may have missed the most important part of the lyrics- the very last word. I think it should have been punctuated with a question mark as well. Gord says it, "Hello?" as if looking around for all the people he was saying he can depend upon; I think he's making an ironice statement that we actually are all quite alone in a sense. |
The Tragically Hip – Locked In The Trunk Of A Car Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Aftermath of the ending of a relationship dealing with the results and reminiscing juxtaposed with an actual murder (don't know much of Pierre Laporte, but I'll look into it). raidu- I agree with you except for the last part. I think this is where either the narration switches from the criminal's point of view to the victim's, or that this point reveals that the criminal and victim are one in the same. |
Dave Matthews – Oh Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Gseal- right on everything except that this is the first time he talked about this event in a song... After all, Under The Table and Dreaming was dedicated to her... |
Dave Matthews Band – Sister (New) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
In Detroit 6/6/06 he mentioned it was about Jane. He said what Kyle said, and also that when they were younger him and Jane used to pretend that her heart somehow got inside him and his inside her chest when she was born, and that this song was about that. |
The Tragically Hip – Boots Or Hearts Lyrics | 18 years ago |
fiiiiiiishy- "but even babies raised by wolves they know exactly when they've been used" You don't think anyone who knows they've been used is bitter? "now you've blocked off most of main street for your faith parade" Seems a little bitter at how self-centered this person is. |
The Tragically Hip – Stay Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I can't decide- can some please tell me- is ysalvatore serious? |
U2 – Please Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Good interpretation blackwell, knowing the historical background in Ireland might have helped. Thanks for calling me out, dando. I don't really see how the last verse fits in well, though. If he is still speaking to the culprits of this holy war, why does he refer to them as "my love"? |
U2 – Do You Feel Loved Lyrics | 18 years ago |
certainly an interesting theory, and well backed-up, eire, but I think it overlooks a few things. "Stick together, a man and woman" is too firm a bond for a fan-rockstar relationship, I think. Then there's the final line, "There's heat in the sun to see us through the rain." What metaphorical rain could there be in a relationship of a fan-rockstar? |
Dave Matthews Band – Two Step Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Maybe I do need to make some points against Noah's Ark because too many people believe in that theory. A) it says WE climb on 2 by 2. It was animals that climbed on two by two onto the ark, Noah had his entire family with him so it wouldn't be 2 by 2 would it? And telling that from the perspective of animals wouldn't make any sense. B) The Bible doesn't speak specifically about Noah having any extraordinary love for his wife, as the speak of Two Step clearly does. C) There was nothing to celebrate on the Ark. Do you know why Noah went onto the Ark? So that the rest of the evil world could be wiped out. Do you think "Celebrate we will" would be something Noah would be saying? Such a pious man surely would not have rejoiced at the destruction of the rest of the world, even if he had been persecuted. |
Dave Matthews Band – Two Step Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Inevitability of death, and yet taking joy in the love we can have during the short time we have on this earth. I think if Dave saw the things on here about Noah's Ark and the Vietnam War he would have a good laugh. Everyone's taking it to literally or reading too much into it. Just because Dave said it's about love during war doesn't mean he had a specific war in mind, it's the idea of love living on through such a hostile and violent world. I don't even need to make any points against Noah's Ark because that idea is just too ridiculous. |
Matthew Good Band – Fall Of Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I always thought "we'll stick to the plan" was "we're sticks in the plan." I kinda like it better, kind of goes along with another Matt Good lyric "You are still here and so made to figure you are an important part of the computer." But now that I read that I can hear that it uses stick as a verb. |
The Tragically Hip – If New Orleans Is Beat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I see this song as kind of a symbol of the downfall of society. I think "the world's changin' for the worse" is a recurring theme in the hip's lyrics. The Mississippi river is a great symbol of the power of nature. In the midwest (Minnesota) it is just gorgeous. Down near New Orleans I picture it as being significantly less natural and more polluted. So it's still got a piece of that natural beauty, but it's slowly dying, and so is nature; so where's that leave our future? Is it inevitable or can something still be done? I don't know, that's just what I get out of it. |
The Tragically Hip – Leave Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm pretty sure the blind lead the blind whispering things like "I'm the money" rather than "on the money." |
Harvey Danger – Jack The Lion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm with the hippie on this one. If it had said just "old man" instead of "the old man" you might have a point for another acquaintance, but "the old man" speaks so specifically that I think it has to be his father. |
Harvey Danger – Old Hat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Two points for catching the Moby Dick reference. Minus three points for using the word juxtaposition for no real reason. |
Stars – Tru Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm not too sure on the meaning exactly. Stars are notorious for writing fictional stories about lovers, so the places aren't necessarily historical. The one thing I notice is how the title "Tru" is mispelled, which is quite ironic. If tru is mispelled, is the speaker lying? I see it as two young lovers who don't really know what love is yet. The ending "It's killing time" suggests that their brief and premature relationship ended. |
The Tragically Hip – Gift Shop Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I like what opinionhead said. That really makes sense with the "beautiful lull...dangerous tug" of materialism. |
The Tragically Hip – Vaccination Scar Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Perplexing song. Something good for you in the long-run, yet it hurts now and leaves a permanent mark. Ending a relationship? Maybe. An ever-changing world? Maybe. Rockin' song? Fuck yeah. |
The Tragically Hip – Nautical Disaster Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"the other problems in his life are much more significant than the conversation between him and Susan." I think you misinterpreted this. The narrator compares the faintness of this conversation to his fallen comrades' desperate fingernails scratching on his own hull. You have to imagine that this horrible scene of carnage sticks out in his memory, and his conversation with 'susan' (generic woman name) is as vivid as that is. Contrary to what fsfwannabe said, I think these two images are the most significant ones in his life. |
The Tragically Hip – Twist My Arm Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think anyone will tell you this song isn't really about the lull of Detroit, it's just one of the ways Gord personalizes shows to match the cities he's playing in. I really like the last stanza: Martyrs don't do much for me Though I enjoy them vicariously After you. No! After me. No, I insist! Please, after me. You can picture two martyrs fighting over who gets to take one for the team. I kind of see this song as a satire of religion in that sense. Doesn't want to twist his arm into conforming with religious traditions? But there also seems to be more the aspect of a woman with "all that charm." I don't know... |
Broken Social Scene – Backyards Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Backy- I think there is considerable evidence against your idealistic picture of this song. "Silent waves responds expose to fear" is pretty harsh, not as harsh as "a kill" and "rented faces, lying on a naked train" later on. |
The Tragically Hip – New Orleans Is Sinking Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Fuck your pretentions, yet I respect your right to be vocally retarded. Thank you for your time and attention." Fuckn owned. And Red Rover selects to go on Over to a less-educated fanbase to make more comments out of his ace. |
The Tragically Hip – Something On Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Just saw this one live at Fox Theatre- introduced somewhere along the lines of "This song is about friendship, and dealing with fame" Yeah whatever, Gord, way to let us know, but keep rocking in the free world! |
The Tragically Hip – Scared Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I love this song, recently heard it live. The meaning- somewhere along the lines of growing up during the Great War, "So when Nazis find the whole place dark They'd think god's left the museum for good" I think is a key quote, maybe growing up in Russia or one of the other neighbouring European countries the nazi's invaded. |
The Tragically Hip – Boots Or Hearts Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Wow. This is another sweet (or should I say bitter) breakup song. I would go on explaining this song, but I think it's pretty obvious. Two lovers are growing apart, and they're starting to get confused about why they don't agree on anything anymore. |
The Tragically Hip – Nautical Disaster Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Yea The Hip def. have such a unique sound that it's hard for some people to get used to, but I think even non-Hip fans have to admit that this song absolutely rocks their socks off. I LOVE IT. I think it's my fav. hip song, altho I've probably said that to like 8 dif. songs. I WANNA MARRY THIS SONG. Gord, I don't know if it's legal over in Canada, but WILL YOU MARRY ME!? |
The Tragically Hip – The Dire Wolf Lyrics | 20 years ago |

The Tragically Hip – Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man Lyrics | 20 years ago |

The Tragically Hip – I'll Believe in You (Or I'll Be Leaving You Tonight) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
oh, don't you mean the story of ALL women? OOoo just kidding ladies! I love you all |
The Tragically Hip – Fully Completely Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Yea- this and "Vancouver Divorce" are def. the best breakup songs ever. She said "youre gonna miss me, wait and you'll see... fully, and completely!" Sweet song, and IM me at Madscooterfoo |
The Tragically Hip – Ahead By A Century Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I wish I had money and could just buy The Tragically Hip, I love this song. My SN is Madscooterfoo if anyone wants to talk. Yea this song is one of the best |
The Tragically Hip – Stay Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Well a lot of what I'm about to say is really ridiculously obvious, but that's ok I just wanted other opinions.... At first, he's saying "fuck this relationship, I don't need her" But with time, he finds that he really misses her. As for all this balancing business- I think it relates to how in every relationship, you keep thinking that you can find the perfect one, and your life will just be so great after you've found her. But every relationship takes work, even the strongest and happiest couples still get in arguments and have problems, they just find ways to balance it themselves. Yea, I love this song though. AND I'm American. Wanted that out there. Love Canada, it's kinda cold, but I still love it. ANd the Hip. Anyone wanna talk on AIM my sn is MADSCOOTERFOO. Peace, love and God's blessings |
Gordon Downie – Vancouver Divorce Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Vancouver Divorce, yet NO POSTS!? I am absolutely IRATE!!!. This is by far my favorite breakup song ever written and GORD DOWNIE IS THE MAN! Okay, so this one time I was at a concert, and I was standing front row, Gord leaned out, and a drop of sweat fell from his chin, I reached out to catch it in my hand, and okay so none of that story was true, Ive never seen the hip live, but I want to. Okay, back to songmeanings. Oh this one is just so damn obvious, tho. It's obvious that this couple bickered a lot, and gord never really knew what he had til it was gone. She left him, but he wasn't surprised. You can just feel the damn tension, sitting at Tim Horton's (Canada is filthy with this coffee shop). Very clever lyrics tho "Sitting here at the Horton's, so ya know this is impOOorORrrrrrrrtant" Then at the end, Gord regrets it, he doesn't want her to leave. I don't think he means paintings in the literal sense, like she is an artist, but he loves what she does for him. THis song just sends freaking SHIVERS oh MAN you have to listen to it. |
U2 – Please Lyrics | 20 years ago |
okay, I'm not going to lie, I'm just making it look like there's more posts on this song so I can hear other peoples opinions :>( |
U2 – Ultraviolet (Light My Way) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This song just makes you cream your pants |
U2 – Please Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I'm going to start this post with the same way everyone starts every first post: "HOLY SHIT! I CAAAAANNNNN'TTTT believe NOone has POSTED about this SONG yet!" Phew, with that done, this is probably my fav. song on "Pop". Last summer, I just put it on repeat, such a great song to fall asleep to on those hott summer nights. That said, I've never really pondered all that hard about what it means. I guess to me, this is a song about an over-confident Catholic wench who thinks she is a better person than everyone just because she was blessed to be born into a Christian family, and so she talks down to people. Also, it's a song about how you (especially Catholic wench) never know what you have until it's gone. I think this girl may have abused and used (bono?) but at the same time, neither of them really know what love is yet. Still one of my favorite songs by U2 ever, even tho I listen to it so much that I should be sick of it by now. |
U2 – Do You Feel Loved Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I think this song is about how a lot of people confuse Love with Lust nowadays. Bono says he will stay loyal, "take these boots they're going nowhere you know these boots they don't want to stray" and he wants this girl to take him and "tie him down" (so he doesn't leave) Then they start having sex, confusing it with love. "pushing and shoving in the belly of a woman" could perhaps mean she gets pregnant? Then the "heavy rythym taking over" could be that they've finally outgrown their sexual relationship, and now are settling down and just trying to "stick together" The part in the song that confuses me is the constant references to the sun and rain. Maybe looks can be deceiving? Either way, I'm disgusted by the lack of comments on this song, one of the best on "Pop" |
