...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Sunken Dreams Lyrics 17 years ago
Someone with more motivation than me should figure out what the spoken interlude and the repeated line at the end say and post it.

Modest Mouse – Bukowski Lyrics 17 years ago
I always saw the song as a narrative of a conversation between two people. One person believes in God, the other is skeptical.

The part that beings with "Well, see what you wanna see..." is the person who believes in God talking, basically saying "you can live a free-spirit life, but where is that going to get you?".

Well, take what you want from me/You deserve it all = owing God everything, sacrifice, etc.

Nine times out of ten/Our hearts just get dissolved/Well, I want a better place/Or just a better way to fall/But one time out of ten/Everything is perfect for us all/Well, I want a better place/Or just a better way to fall = you can go around chasing women, but you will just get your heart broken. I would rather love God instead. Granted, sometimes love works out, but I would still choose the love of God over that.

Then, the other person, who is growing a little exasperated by the speech, rolls his eyes and says "Here we go..." and lets out all of the foundations of his skepticism.
He makes his point and leaves it alone, but the other person keeps on preaching ["You were talk talk talkin' in circles that day"]

The skeptical person is the speaker in the song, of course. And I always thought that when he said "every night/day turns out to be a little bit more like Bukowski" he was referring to the Bukowski-esque cynicism that he felt while having these same philosophical conversations over and over.
The "Who would want to be such an asshole?" refers to the guilt/shame he feels for being so cynical.

Sunny Day Real Estate – How It Feels To Be Something On Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song as a lot to do with taking the bad along with the good in life. Many people talk about the injustice of why this or that bad thing happened to them, but there is good in everything. Even the bad things make you feel alive, and you wouldn't be experiencing life without them.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Richter Scale Madness Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh, and I love this song because I feel like it purposefully takes that whole 'rock-music-is-evil' stereotype to another level. Its just so blatant, it beats you over the head with the idea. Perfect way to start out their first album.

I may be wrong, but before the "kill kill kill" part, doesn't Conrad say something like "1995, one more year I'll die" or something that sounds like that?

Wow. Thank you for the information!
I am endlessly amased by Ian's knowledge of Nazi Germany. He was an intelligent chap.

Interpol – Not Even Jail Lyrics 19 years ago
Interpol is one big Joy Division reference in itself.

I am not saying that as a bad thing. Joy Division is one of my favorite bands, and I think that Interpol does a great job of creating their own songs, but they are pretty blatantly influenced by JD whether they conciously mean to be or not.

Anyway, about the song. The thing I like about Interpol is that their lyrics don't always come right out and say what they mean, but you can just tell in the voice and emotion of the song. I really think that this is about going into a relationship knowing that you will hurt the person, even though you don't want to.

Anyone know what he is whispering during the bridge?

I wanna take the meaning a step further and say that it is about loving someone, either romantically or platonically, who screws you over. This song is the list of things you would say to them out of anger, but you don't really mean any of them, you are just trying to hurt the person in question.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – A Classic Arts Showcase Lyrics 19 years ago
When I first heard this song, I was elated. I used to watch 'Classic Art Showcase' on our college tv station and no one seemed to appreciate it but me.

I am assuming that is what it is about, of course - watching 'Classic Art Showcase' and basking in its glory.

Can anyone tell me what the significance of the numbers is?
[That sounded really pretentious. I honestly didn't mean for it to]

I think it may be the B-side to a single from 'Building Nothing Out of Something', but I can't prove it...

I think its about feeling different or cast out from people around you and/or feeling different from others because they are more vain and not as introspective.

I wish his song was around when I was about 13, because it would have fit the angst perfectly.

Nada Surf – Icebox Lyrics 20 years ago
I always thought this song was about someone close to you dying, and the regret and associated feelings afterward.

This is not only my favorite Nada Surf song, but one of my favorite songs of all time.
