Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics 13 years ago
Yes, I also interpreted the "pour a little salt" line as evoking an image of salting the land so that it would infertile, thus killing any memory of the relationship and any memory of it, so "we were never here".

Coldplay – Violet Hill Lyrics 14 years ago
I see a lot of people saying it's "bury me in honor".

I listen very closely and I hear "bury me in armor". Which would make sense seeing as the song seems to be from the point of view of a disenfranchised, bitter soldier.

Thrice – Lullaby Lyrics 15 years ago
I think if anyone makes strawman arguments, it's Lennon. He implies that without things like country or religion, people will live peacefully and happily, living each moment as it comes. He implies that religion and country are the reason people kill, and die, and are miserable, and don't focus on their life at hand and just think about the future.

This is inherently a huge strawman. Neither religion nor the concept of country are what make people kill each other. People have killed each other since the dawn of time. People will ALWAYS have something kill each other for. People will ALWAYS have something to hate each other for. People will ALWAYS want more than they have.

The idea of "world peace" is as Thrice states, a pallid dream, a lullaby. It's in human nature to hate and kill, unfortunately. The best we can do is continue to try and make the world a better place knowing it will never be a perfect utopia. And in reality, the world being a utopian dream like Lennon describes would awful. You need the pain to appreciate the joy. I agree with Thrice.

Minus the Bear – Electric Rainbow Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure the 'stay lonely' is actually "stay low, man". Which would fit in the rest of the lyrics well.

And this song reminds me of a movie or book. The "narrator" is talking to a friend who has pulled off some heist/rip off of some very dangerous people. Perhaps something to do with gambling, as he says something about "the score".

Minus the Bear – Burying Luck Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song was pretty evident to me the first time I heard it. It's a dream he's having about killing someone who had stolen his woman. The "person" digging a hole in the back is himself. He's watching himself bury the body of the man.

It seems as if in this song, he is watching himself do this horrendous act, hence he keeps asking himself "what have you done"? The side of him from which the dream is being seen is regretful for the act, but the part of him he's watching; the part burying the body doesn't seem remorseful.

It seems almost like he's questioning himself why he's done it, and the verses are explaining the rationalization of why he killed this person.

The Starting Line – Photography Lyrics 16 years ago
There are definitely two different versions of this song.

In the one I'm listening to, after he says "I'm grilled by a spotlight" he says "we're still in the meantime, but we're oh so, oh so close".

For me, especially with that last line, I think this is about a couple who breaks up but remain friends. He's missing her, looking at photos of them together. It sounds almost like he's waiting for her (I'm stuck in the meantime).

Thrice – The Earth Will Shake Lyrics 17 years ago
The literal interpretation I don't think would be so much about slaves, but about prisoners in jail. Since he talks of iron bars, and wardens, which are images prevelant in jails, not of slavery.

As far as Christian refrences, I seem to see a lot of debate whether or not these songs are supposed to be outwardly Christian. But keep in mind that an artist can have multi-faceted interpretations of their work, and furthermore, that the Bible is often times an allegory for many of the things human beings experience. It's great for allegory.

So, to say that it is not JUST a Christian message and to say it does have Christian undertones are both correct.

The Police – Every Breath You Take Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, it always seemed silly that people thought this was such a "creepy" sounding song. Maybe that's because I see most romantic love as always somehow rooted in deep friendship, and plenty of people stay good friends even after years of being together.

In that context, it's more like subdued nostaliga, still loving a woman you were with, but now share a close friendship with, and watching her move on with her life, and knowing that somehow, you'll always love her. That's what I get out of the song, at least.

Death Cab for Cutie – Summer Skin Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is probably one of the most heart-breaking songs I've ever heard because it's so relatable. Especially in this time of life, when graduation is near.

I agree with some of the different takes. I don't think it nessecarily represents a strictly summer romance, but perhaps a long romance that will end when summer does. I really liked the take of people going to College that someone else had. It fits perfectly with the imagery. Her going away soon after labor day to college, him staying behind. He goes over the last night they have together and realizes it will be over once she goes.

I guess this strikes a special chord with me, and makes it terribly depressing.

Unearth – Sanctity of Brothers Lyrics 17 years ago
It sounds a lot like The Outsiders-esque idea of close friendships and brotherhood and loyalty. The chorus sounds like the book as well, with "bring back those days of gold". In the book, Robert Frost's poem "nothing gold can stay" is quoted, and one of the characters tells the other to "stay gold", or stay youthful and innocent at heart. That's what this song means to me. The sanctity of boyhood friendships that became like brotherhoods, and yearning for those days of loyalty and fealty to one another.

Thrice – Eclipse Lyrics 17 years ago
I took a different message from this song. I saw it more of an atestment to the fact that man has always burned to become more like divinity. It's almost in human nature to play God, particularly by taking life.

The images of making war on Heaven (Apollo dead) and to "bridge the great divide" (Between humans and Gods) seems symbolic of the human nature of trying to amass more power, and we build weapons that give us almost God-like powers (nuclear weapons, etc.)

Just my two cents.

The Cure – Lullaby Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's more so meant to be a simple manifestation of fears. How your fears creep up on you, and even though people say to face them, it's paralyzingly frightening to try and face something you're afraid of.

It also has an element of childhood, almost boyish writing. Maybe illustrating the fright of being a boy, when all the monsters were so vivid and you could feel their tentacles or many legs pull you into its jaws.

Badly Drawn Boy – Once Around The Block Lyrics 17 years ago
Pretty much what everyone else says, it's obviously a love song. To me though, I see and interpret the meaning of the lyrics and the music as complimentary. And I see this as more as a first date, or a blossoming love rather than one that's already happened.

It's got the feeling of first date jitters, or even post-date jitters, driving home and reflecting back on the night. Smacking yourself for saying some stupid things, and feeling dumb for having stuttered so much, but still feeling like it was the best date of your life.

Death Cab for Cutie – The Sound of Settling Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's much more than just the inability to talk to someone who could've been a potential romance.

I think he definitely uses that as a springboard for things in general. Every decision you make elimnates thousands of potential futures that would've come about if you had gone with one of your many choices.

I think this song harks on that. It's about how people drive themselves crazy with the ideas of how this or that could've been different, but in the end, there's no use. You have to accept what's infront of you and the choices at hand.

Minus the Bear – Hooray Lyrics 18 years ago
Indeed. I think, besides taking hold of your youth, it also has a message for grown people, which is to never grow too old at heart. Always remain a child at heart.

The image of men becoming boys again is just very powerful and amusing. It's tiny moments like those that make you appreciate being human. How something as arbitrary as snow can make everything clean and infuse everyone with a sense of youth.

Elliott Smith – Baby Britain Lyrics 18 years ago
To the person whose idea that this song was refrencing Britain. Are you not the person who was calling Americans self-centered? Yet you're sitting there ASSUMING it's about you.

And here's the kicker; music is not definite or concrete. If Elliot Smith wanted his music to be interpreted in an EXACT way, he outwardly stated what his songs are about. But he didn't, because he, like many artists, understood that it was all about individual meanings. A good song is one that can be interpreted thousands of different ways and have a thousand different meanings to different people, even if those meanings are not nessecarily what the artist had in mind while writing the piece.

To me, the best interpretation of this song is Elliot writing about himself, and his own struggles with alcoholism.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dosed Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about accepting a loss of something one never had. In this case, it seems like a friendship or relationship. He accepts now that there is nothing he can do to get closer to her, and there is no way he can ever be with her.

He equates the relationship with a drug; as it felt extremely right to love her, but in the end, only hurt him when he finally come down from his high.

Matthew Good Band – Weapon Lyrics 19 years ago
I take this song more literally, or at least what he means in the lyrics. I think the song is, how someone else mentioned, that everyone has the potential for evil. The song to me is someone being seduced by essentially "the devil", and being conflicted as to who to give their faith to.

I think the "devil" can represent many different things in this case. Vices. Drug abuse, gambling, alchohol abuse, violence. It's the reason why people turn to terrorism or crime, because one is seduced by thoughts that this will alleviate your pain. So the idea of these things bringing you happiness, essentially represent satan or lucifer, or whatever evil persona we want to attach to it.

Oasis – Wonderwall Lyrics 19 years ago
Who really cares about whether or not the Beatles are better than Oasis. You might think so, you might not. Everyone has their own opinion. This isn't Oasis Vs. Beatles anyhow.

I think it's easier to take the song for face value as a love song and leave it at that. Most, if not all the lyrics point to it being about a girl the writer loved, and going through all the complications of loving someone and finally naming them some nonsensical word that fits your description of true love.

A town like paris,
Thank you for once again proving how much of a pretentious moron you can be.

In any case, now to be a "bitch-face-emo-kid". I love this song, and it reminds me of being with my girlfriend. The line about the person being on the road for shows confused me, because I figured this was written by him to the girl who always stayed at home while he played shows. Oh well.

Amazone, if the lyrics of the song are up to the listener, then why are you so quick to say it's not about the cold war?

To me, this song has no feeling of being a stalker. To me it's about a lover who dies, and through heaven or being a ghost or whatever it is, watches his love live life without him.

Modest Mouse – Tiny Cities Made of Ashes Lyrics 20 years ago
I doubt it's about drugs. It has a meaning, just it's very elusive. I read somewhere, (Though I don't know if there's anything to invest it) that modest mouse got a lot of the lyrics for this album from a guy who turned out to be insane? I dunno, if that is true then obviously the meaning is going to be harder to find. Every song has a meaning, so this song is not "ridiculous".

Motion City Soundtrack – My Favorite Accident Lyrics 20 years ago
Jinx, please do shut up. If you're so caught up in the meaning of the song then why did you post with something that had nothing to do with the meanings of the lyrics?

I also always thought it was "I can't swim in the silence of your escape", and that makes more sense than "silence of your skin", thus putting a whole in these pervert theories.

Rage Against the Machine – People Of The Sun Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is not only just about the zapitista movement, it's about the whole history of the mexican country and its people, and the injustice it's endured over the years by various countries. Though it could be about the aztecs, aztecs were primarily in south america, not central america. The natives there were the mayans more so. 1516, obviously refers to the spanish as well as the french who occupied mexico later on. "Back cracked for tobacco" refers to spanish enslavery and forcing the natives to pick tobacco plants, as it was a blooming buisness back in the late 1500's and 1600's, and even more so when the first american colonists set up a colony in the 1600's. "Troops strippin' zoots, shots of red mist,
Sailors blood on tha deck
Come sista resist
From the era of terror check this photo lens,
Tha city of angels does tha ethnic cleanse" all refers to the los angeles riots in the 40's. "Zoot suits" were primarily mexican american kids (some were fillipino as well) who openly defied the impliment of cloth limits by the U.S. to reserve more cloth for the war effort. These zoot suits were very large and baggy, so it took a lot of cloth to make. One night, sailors who's ship had docked in the los angeles port went around the town and accosted some mexican girls. Because of this, a local group of zoot suits fought them and beat the sailors. The next night, hundreds of sailors flooded the streets of L.A looking for any mexican american or even hispanic kid and stripped them of their clothes, which is where the "troops strippin' zoots" lyric comes from. It was not just white sailors however, it was also african american sailors who took part in this, despite the racism geared towards them, many african americans had racism towards hispanics and asians. Even though the sailors were the ones beating all the hispanic and fillipino kids, the zoot suits were the ones being put in jail. It was a very corrupt time.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – This Velvet Glove Lyrics 20 years ago
I believe this is a long song, but not nessecarily about a love he didn't take a chance on or he cannot recieve in return. I think it's about a love he had that went wrong and was ended, wether by him or by the girl. As far as the refrence to drugs, I agree with what someone else said. Drugs have such broad range of affects and features that anything could be attached to drug use. The "close to my skin" lyric is accented by the title, "this velvelt glove". "Sailin’ for the sun
’Cause There is one
Knows where I’m from" I think is an attachment to a part of the chorus. "Your solar eyes are like nothing I have ever seen". The love interests eyes' are so bright they remind him of the sun, thus he sails toward it to find that feeling he once had. Sailing would be a metaphor to his departure, to which john says to live above hell, or to live life well outside of this scope of love. It may also be a refrence to the book of john, but that's if you want to stretch it i suppose. All in all, this is my favorite song by RHCP.

AFI – The Leaving Song Pt. 2 Lyrics 20 years ago
'Yo estado aqui, muchas veces antes. Y regreso'
Translates as: I have been here before, many times before. And I come back.

'Y regreso aqui otra vez y comienzo '
And I come back, here once again and commence (or less literal, start)

I translated that myself, being hispanic and knowing spanish so.

Soccer does have quarters. If you pay attention to a pro-soccer game broadcasted, it will tell you what quarter it is. Maybe not in american soccer, but in all the other soccer games I've seen it has.

"Tending the net" does refer to soccer, that's why there's a term in soccer called "Goal tending".

A town like paris, please stop trying to make yourself intelligent by insulting other people's reviews. It says "what does this song mean to you", not be a pretentious moron. The person stated what the song meant to him or her, so grow brain cells before you start speaking like you have some right to.

I don't know about the girl getting around part, but I do think that it's a love song. I think it's about a couple that started to grow apart and eventually the girl moved away. Now that he has a chance to visit her, it seems as though she's moved on. I think "the stranger with your door key" is the new person she's fallen for, and then of course he says "I am finally seeing why i was the one worth leaving." Just my input.

As far as the lyrics "I can't accept that it's over: I will block the door
like a goalie tending the net in the third quarter
of a tied-game of rivalry " go, that IS correct. Soccer games do have quarters, just the game doesn't stop for them, but they are measured. Coaches take those quarters as chances to put in or exctract players. There are four quarters in a soccer game. Two in the first half, two in the second. Just wanted to clear it, it is correct.
