I agree somewhat with imozarti, except that instead of this being present tense, I think that the realization happened after the relationship has ended. When someone exits your life, their lack of action and words after that point force you to make up your own reasoning and justification as to their incentives and motivation. Sometimes you can dwell on someone's absence for so long that they become a metaphor, almost nonexistant... therefore he has only her image as compensation. |

i remember when i was younger, i felt that because i was very emotional and full of feelings, that a lot of older people considered me to be naive. a lot of times we resort to becoming "numb" just like those we call bitter and jaded in order to protect ourselves and our feelings. it's natural for people to want to hide from their feelings - that's the most literal meaning you can get out of this song. everybody has heard the cliched term "bottling up your feelings," and you can't forever.. so eventually you explode. hence the "i'll get though becoming you, becoming you" sometimes we find ourselves doing what we used to hate others for doing, esp. if the person you are with, or want to be with, hides from you. in order to move on away from someone who is hiding their feelings from you, you can find yourself hiding your feelings from them.. if that makes sense. you can't wear your heart on your sleeve all the time. |

| the whole orchestrated bit is just.. well, i'm not sure about anybody else but there are so many fucking images that come to mind when i listen to this song. a whole play acting with conor as a puppet, bright red curtains, etc. a lot like some french film with tragicism involved. but anyways, i feel such a connection to the fairytale of pinnochio that i do believe you're right, spazzo, completely. there are different views on conor but there's mainly just the two sides - the critics who love to hate him and the fans who are just, well, in love with him. | |

i sense sarcasm, or bitterness. i'm not sure what exactly, but she doesn't exactly seem so sure of herself when she is speaking of winning someone back, making them stay with her (and she speaks of this in a somewhat apathetic tone, like she wouldn't mind either way). and also there are the lines, "Though dreams can be deceiving like faces are to hearts They serve for sweet relieving when fantasy and reality lie too far apart" that is the part where i stop believing she is speaking of his feelings and not her own. |

a lot of you have forgotten the fact that fiona is saying "you'll," and a whole lot at that. regardless of what the song is about, she is continually talking in the future tense. so i really don't think that any doubts or inhibitions she is speaking of are about someone else, and not of her own person. |

It's completely conditional, there's no use tearing apart At the Drive-In's or the Mars Volta's lyrics because you won't discover any inevitable truth at the end of your search. And that's because there isn't one. "Now I'm lost," "I am to go," so many of their lyrics are about searching and so few are of finding. Their intelligent and intimidating lyrics usually don't flood anything over, it's not about ripping anything apart. When did we lose sight of the music? |
