The Smashing Pumpkins – Rhinoceros Lyrics 20 years ago
Probably my 2nd favorite SP song....
The mood and tempo of the song remind me of making out, for whatever reason.
As for the meaning-- I have no idea. Seems like it's just about hanging out with your friends and having a good time.

Sorry about that... I checked the CD credits and eeyore's right. Whoops.

I'm with Ironic on this one. And yeah, the music video did suck... even though the girls were pretty hot. I dunno, though, I kinda took the video as a parody of today's videos-- with the tits, ass, and pointless shit in it. Hmm.

This is my favorite by SP, and as for the meaning, I'm with lost_zero.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Eye Lyrics 20 years ago
This is one of my favorite SP songs. As for my interpritation, I think it's about someone in a strictly physical relationship, but they're beginning to want more from the other... To be able to connect with each other on an emotional level I guess.

Now that I'm looking at it, it could have a different meaning to me, too. The guy singing this song could be examining his current relationship, and realizes he's pretty much just using his girlfriend. He feels guilt and can't sleep, then realizes he really does love this girl, even if it doesn't show very well. She can either leave him (turn towards the gate of heaven) or stay with him (to myself be damned) and be unhappy. By saying "Turn away from the light," he may mean to forget about heaven and your freedom-- stay with me. Then when he gets to the "It's not enough, just to touch," part, he may be realizing that he's going to have to show his affection for her in different ways now.

Sorry for the rambling, guys :P

I think it's about some one realizing it's time to just move on.

Wow. I was just gonna comment on how close my views on this song are with damn dirty insomniac's, and then I realized that it was my old username :P
But they're still the same-- It's an amazing song

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is oozing with emotions, but I can't pinpoint just which ones.... You guys have mentioned a few good ideas, though-- especially doobey's explanation for the title. Anyways, great song-- I'm looking forward to hearing some more of their stuff now.

Yeah, this is pretty much life scrunched into a few minutes of great music. It's one of my favorite songs.

I won't try to explain it line by line, but I'm guessing it's about some one telling you about how they feel while trying to quit drugs.

Heh, I wouldn't say 'obviously,' but perhaps that's what it is..... I know I have no frickin clue.

A Perfect Circle – The Noose Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm with prayingmantis on this one.
It seems like it's about some one who killed an innocent person (or people) while DUI. They've either gone to rehab or 'found Jeebus' so they feel like they've made up for their past mistakes. The singer, though, is kinda like "Hey-- you're all better now!... That's great and all, but uh, what about the people you killed? They're still dead, and nothing can change that."

Yeah, I can't quite picture Maynard wording that last part like that.

A Perfect Circle – Crimes Lyrics 20 years ago
No clue about what the 'real' meaning might be, but whenever I hear this song, I imagine some one who's just sick of life and suicidal. They're counting to ten before they do it (most likely with a gun), but hesitate on nine, since they're starting to wonder if it's really such a good idea. They hesitate on ten as well, unable to go through with it.
Does anyone know what they're saying in the background? Especially towards the end...

A Perfect Circle – Weak And Powerless Lyrics 20 years ago
"Tilling my own grave to keep me level"
-- He's doing drugs to feel better, yet they're killing him as well

"Jam another dragon down the hole"
-- Maybe represents a needle, or pills going down him throat? I dunno.

"Digging to the rhythm and the echo of a solitary siren
One that pushes me along and leaves me so"
-- The digging refers back to the first line, and as he does so, he's doing it to his body's screams for more drugs (the solitary siren)

"Desperate and ravenous
So weak and powerless
Over you"
-- This would definitely fit in with the drug theme... Pretty self-explanatory.

"Someone feed the monkey while I dig in search of China
White as Dracula as I approach the bottom"
-- Reference to the 'monkey on my back' which is some times used to describe addictions. China is known for its heroin and opium and such, so _maybe_ that explains that part... The white as Dracula part is thrown in there to describe the fear he feels as he's slowly killing himself, and sinking lower and lower.

"Little angel, go away
Come again some other day
Devil has my ear today
I'll never hear a word you say"
-- His conscious or common sense is telling him to quit while he can, but the effects of the drugs cloud his judgment.

"He promised I would find a little
Solace and some peace of mind
Whatever, just as long as I don't feel so"
-- The drugs win. He's now giving in again, unable to suppress his cravings.

Yeah, this is my interpretation. Probably off in several areas, but works for me. Just doing my best to keep deep_and_down okay ;)

Gee, I thought ALL of Maynard's songs were about anal sex... Hmm. That's what 73.2810% of fans claim, anyway.

My favorite Floyd song.... I see it as a look back on how good and simple things used to be, and how your life never turned out quite the way you'd hoped it would.... But you still go on.

Tool – Pushit (Live) Lyrics 20 years ago
A masterpiece. How many of you guys really kept your eyes closed through out the entire song? I can remember the first time I listened to this CD I was in my room at night. When this song came on I shut off the lights, cuddled under my bed's covers, closed my eyes, and wow. I was crying like a little girl by the end of the song-- it was just so touching and very well done. I try to limit how often I hear it, so that it doesn't grow old or too familiar.

Not too sure about this one. All I know for sure is that it's Maynard's son, Devo, singing the guitar riff from Pet. Maybe it ties into the drug-theme by showing how the addict has gotten what he needed, and can finally relax and enjoy the high.... I guess basically how the drug is soothing him.

I guess that works, too-- The song being sung by the drug to the user.

I'm gonna go with the more obvious of the choices and say this song is about not being noticed. And considering how many of you guys have put things similar to how I veiw it, I'll just leave it at that. Great new perspectives on it now, though, thanks :)

A Perfect Circle – Over Lyrics 20 years ago
Yes, I can see Maynard singing this song about the album in general. As for myself, though, it always reminds me of past relationships... the kind where the small things don't work out, and you find yourself going in circles, repeating them over and over and over, which in turn brings about silly arguements and eventually a breakup. But, that's just me... I guess if you just listen the the first part (not the whispers at the end) it could talk about just anything in general that you keep repeating, instead of learning from that mistake. History, rehab, relationships, deja vous-- anything goes.

A Perfect Circle – The Package Lyrics 20 years ago
Ahh, I love this song. Great transitions and layering....
Anyways, to keep things short, I think this is about some one (most likely a man, but it could go either way) talking about how his only real need is to satisfy his uncomtrolable lust. He doesn't really want some one to connect with emotionally, just a person that'll satisfy his sexual cravings. He'll do anything to temporarily get with them, including lie, deceive, and pretend. As for the changes in the tone (like when he gets to the "mine" parts) he seems temporarily possessive of this person that he believes he's fooled and conquered. Maybe releasing some pent up aggression now that he's got what he wanted and doesn't have to play along with the bullshit act of his anymore, too...

A Perfect Circle – Pet Lyrics 20 years ago
Hmm. I think this song is about the current state of our country and the war. I can picture Bush singing this to us, asking us to pay no mind to what's going on in the war, and to not bother asking questions-- he'll take care of us, right?
*Cough* sure.... It points out how today's society is asleep, ignorant, and pretty much unaware of what's happening around us. We just kinda go with it and assume it's all for the best.

"... Pay no mind to the rabble..." --would refer to people trying to speak out about what's going on in order to help everyone else see it as well, but we're told to not listen to them.

"...Your enemies and your choices son
They're one in the same
I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself..." -- The speaker asking: Why endanger yourself by risking a bad choice? Let me decide for you, and keep you safe

At first I thought this song was a father (or mother) talking to their child, trying to comfort them and maybe sheltering them a little too much. Kinda gets into the whole "overprotected" thing, but yeah, I'll try and steer away from that subject for now. But the line that changed my mind was "... Swayin to the rhythm of the New World Order..." I dunno, makes sense to me, anyway :)

A Perfect Circle – Thinking Of You Lyrics 20 years ago
When I listen to this song (my favorite on the CD, by the way-- I love the tone), I always think of a man fantasizing and getting off to memories from the night before... like many of you have of course figured out. But I think it's more about him screwing a virgin, not just whoever he's with at the time. I may be wrong, but I feel the fact he mentions "Surrendering" and "Sweet revelation" to kinda support that idea. To a virgin, the 1st time is a new experience and realization, or as he puts it, a revelation. As for the surrender, I guess it could be applied to anyone, but it fits in nicely with my perspective. Then again, who knows.
Oh, I almost forgot. I recently saw them live last month in Albuquerque-- great show!! While singing this song Maynard did play around with himself, but it wasn't exactly masturbating, just grabbing his stuff to the rhythm of the song. And right before even starting the song, he mentioned it was best sung with your pants off, too :)

A Perfect Circle – The Nurse Who Loved Me (Failure cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
Well, I can't say this is one of my favorites off of Thirteenth Step, but it has definately grown on me. I basically see it as a playful song sung from the perspective of a patient in a mental institution or rehab. He's convinced one of the nurses is "falling for him." She's perfect for him (pharmacy keys, pills-- what more could a crazy man could ask for!?) He believes she only gives him the special attention, and just acts like a regular nurse towards the other patients. Cuz hey, he's special :)
