i wrote an english paper on this song relating to the book "night" by elie wiesel.
In this song, Conor Oberst is talking about his disbelief in God and Jesus, and doubting his existance.When one is in several terrible situations, it is hard to have hope for the future, and keep faith in God when it seems he is not "helping" you.
There is a great deal of imagery in the lyrics. For example, in the chorus, "..When there won't be a moon and there won't be a sun / It will all go black, it will all go back to the way it's supposed to be". In religious theory, before God, the world was dark in a sense of light, and desparation. Without God, not only was there no light, but there was no hope. Relating to the lyrics, God (according to the Bible) controls the sun and moon. So without God, there is no sun and mood, therefore the "black" represents despair and hopelessness without a God. However, the last bit leaves us with Oberst telling us his disbelief in God - that it is supposed to be black, therefore there is not supposed to be a God.

the first bright eyes song i heard;; a long long time ago. many months later, i'm still hooked. i actually used parts of this song in an art project i did pertaining to the horrific era of growing up, and realizing what the world is really like. quite depressing, really. |
