I believe this song is a summary(or a conclusion, if you will) to Songs About Jane. It encompasses the sadness(Mama, I've been crying), the happiness(so gald I met you), the sheer admiration(take my breath away) and the gratitude(so glad I met you...make everyday worth all of the pain that I've gone through) of having had the connection he had with the person he's singing about. The bridge(Hate to love and love to hate her, like a broken record player) is very important as it signals the cyclic nature of his feelings for the girl, where he would feel down about her and then happy, showing that he was very conflicted about his feelings for the girl and puzzled when it came to the easily fluctuating nature of the girl's feelings. He admires the girl's natural beauty and is shown to still be very enamoured by her(perfection of her creation). It can be seen that he is singing about the past(I cannot remember what life was like through photographs). He is also expressing sorrow at seeing people who don't matter in his life, or at least won't matter as much as the girl did.(See people I won't ever meet). Well, every person's interpretation is different based on his or her life experiences. I believe that the point of using the girlfriend's mother in the video is to signify that he went through unrequited love. Forbidden love, which causes a person to feel things strongly due to the fact that he or she cannot act on his feelings. Perhaps the person he was in love with was already in a relationship(he was always there to help her), but it's obvious that he realised that his love interest did not reciprocate his feelings(I know I tend to get so insecure, it doesn't matter anymore). The bridge connotes that he watched her from a distance as she was not available to him(or perhaps did not want to interact with him) and was distant from him despite his strong feelings for her(I know where you hide, alone in your car). The pre-chorus conveys the idea that she does not reciprocate the feelings he harbours for her(I don't mind spending everyday...Ask her if she wants to stay a while) as he has to beg her to be in his life, and has to resort to spending every day in distress, waiting to be able to meet with his love interest. All in all, I believe this song can only be written by someone experiencing intense longing, a song inspired by true, unadulterated love for a person who might have been inappropriate to pursue, given by the fact that his lyrics convey the reluctance of his love interest to be with him |
