The Stone Roses – Elephant Stone Lyrics | 3 years ago |
Another comment about translation of experience (emotion, physical) into sound and music. The opening guitar riff to me is A) like an elephant thundering (perhaps that's a direct nod to the title ?) and B) like the initial outburst as you start to have a damn good cry. No denying the writer was feeling the intense heart break of rejection. |
The Stone Roses – Elephant Stone Lyrics | 3 years ago |
First, sometimes you elevate yourself by accepting what has happened and not denying. Humans can be a walking bag of contradictions - watch a horror movie to be entertained ? Whatever. Anyway Elephant Stone has been a favourite of mine ever since I heard it architecture school back in the early 1990's. Two things amaze me to this day. First how catchy and enjoyable the song is despite the terrifically sad experience of the writer. (He just got dumped, and badly, and he's balling his eyes out on his bed after discovering his girlfriend had done a runner on him.) Second is how brilliantly the drummer translates that experience into a short drum riff that he repeats about 44 times (if I've counted it right) through the song. Basically what he is doing is a short cascading drum role that is the perfect expression of banging your fists on the bed while simultaneously kicking the mattress in alternating rhythm with both legs. That's exactly what you would have done as a kid. As happy and enjoyable as the song is, my heart aches for the writer. We've all been there - heartbreak that is - and it never goes away. All it takes is a trigger. But simultaneous to whatever you may feel from your own past disappointments, it's just darn good entertaining music. |
The Zombies – She's Not There Lyrics | 3 years ago |
@[edulondon:36297] that's funny that's you saw the NPD connection, that's what I saw too even though it's about a family member for me and the sadness I feel that the person I thought they were is 'not there'. 'Sorry' doesn't even factor in, it's too far gone and 'how should I know, why should I care' because I had to move on. |

Then quite a few songs about drug addiction, religious views, or politics. |
Elliott Smith – Coming Up Roses Lyrics | 3 years ago |
Deliberately or serendipitously, Smith's song reworks Sylvia Plath's poem "I Am Vertical," which itself replies to Auden's lines, "Let us honor, if we can,/ The vertical man,/ Though we value none/ But the horizontal one." The big difference? Auden was an emotionally healthy man for whom our general tendency to value the dead over the living could only appear as an irony and an insult to life itself. Plath and Smith were suicidal depressives for whom death figures as a consummation devoutly to be wished. The fact that dying not only relieves us of life's difficulties--"the pressure of days," as Smith calls them elsewhere--but also invests us with "value"--in Auden's words--renders it doubly attractive to Plath and Smith. In both cases you have death aestheticized, made beautiful through its connection with natural cycles. Plath's poem thus ends, "I shall be useful when I lie down finally:/ Then the trees may touch me for once, and the flowers have time for me." Compare that to Smith's refrain: "While the moon does its division/ You're buried below/ And it's coming up roses everywhere./ You've gone red roses." Did Smith know the Plath poem, or the Auden poem? Maybe. For a guy his age, he was pretty well read in literature and philosophy. But it doesn't matter that much. The idea that life is a "conspiracy against the human race" (Thomas Ligotti), a "burden" (Schopenhauer), a "tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,/ Signifying nothing"--this forms one of the great echo-chambers of western art. |

Elton John – Shoot Down the Moon Lyrics | 3 years ago |
"Shoot the Moon" This song - which I heard for the first time tonight, not only had beautiful vocals, and lyrics, but they are spare and cut to the chase. They bore into my heart, because they exactly describe my 32 year relation ship for the past several years. The chorus is repeated, because there's nothing left to say .A tentative truce won't work, or fill your heart with passion. The connection is gone. You are room mates that used to be lovers. And it hurts unendurably., endlessly. That is all. |

Default – It Only Hurts Lyrics | 3 years ago |
I think the song is about Adultery. On the album cover there is a scarlet door and a destroyed home. Scarlet is symbolic with Adultery. Adultery destroyed the home. The song hints at it with Lyrics " Miles away promise from a burning bed. Two worlds should never collide. One word would end it if you ever heard." If the wife/husband knew it would end the marriage. |

@[Slashz28:36289] I know this is nine years later but I think it's about adultery. " Miles away promise from a burning bed. Two worlds should never collide. One word would end it if you ever heard. Also the door on the album is scarlet which is the colour symbol of Adultery. |

Billy Ocean – Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car Lyrics | 3 years ago |
Listening to the lyrics now the song definitely has a touch of a sleazy Pretty Woman rescue story thing going on. The song is about his fixation with a lady he’s seen on the road while cruising in his car. He talks of “making a deal” with her at the roadside, and her being like Cinderella (so him Prince Charming) with connotations of him saving her a life of servitude. Combine that with the whole song is purely about sex, sex in cars and notably not romantic love “I’ll be your nonstop lover”, and it’s reasonable to suggest the song tells a story of a man with long standing but as yet unrealized fantasies about sex with prostitutes, and his obsession with a particular hooker he’s seen while curb crawling. This song came out 2 years before the Pretty Woman movie, so it’s too much to suggest any connection there, but the imagery the song suggests is definitely in that ball park. |

@[kopra:36245] wow i completely agree with you, like when you said "I wish I could, but I'm busy." There is another line where she sings; " Two birds of a feather, Say that they're always gonna stay together, but ones never going to let go of that wire " Perhaps indicates that he's being slightly toxic and doesnt want her to leave and likes being in one place, "but ones never going to let go of that wire" and the other bird, she wants to leave and explore. " One says c'mon and the other says ' I'm tired ' " - seems like he is being lazy or using it as an excuse. (btw sorry i replied like so many years later lmao) |

Bonnie Raitt – All At Once Lyrics | 3 years ago |
I believe, in meditation of her loss, she goes to alpha level, where we connect with God. She hears the voice of God and feels the Holy Spirit brush like a wind, across her face. She is then taken, by God, to a place of exquisite comfort and peace, for awhile, with God, intended only, for her and God. There exists, for each one of us, a place like this, with God, in this life, a foretaste of Eternity, to help us through, the dark night, of the soul. Amen. |

I think he’s saying his life has been hard, he’s travelled so far and has become weary of this world. He calls to the Holy Spirt to carry him through but he says he’ll take it all, all of life’s challenges because forever is just a minute. This is just a small spec of time in all of eternity and when he dies he’ll become one with all of those who have been struggling alongside him. |
Townes Van Zandt – To Live Is to Fly Lyrics | 3 years ago |
It means... this person is saying, right now everything is a mess... but I will be coming back to you so no matter what you think no matter our past together, no matter how we are both struggling with our lives The melody that is us still sings and I will return to you, so dry your tears. "I won't say I love you and I won't say I need you but I will get you, and I won't do you wrong" is saying I choose you, because I love you I choose you because I need you. I choose you because you are my future, so hold on. "I may be gone But it won't be long I will be a'bringin' back the melodies And rhythm that I find" "We all got holes to fill Them holes are all that's real. Some fall on you like a storm, Sometimes you dig your own. The choice is yours to make, Time is yours to take; Some sail dive in the sea, Some toil upon the stone. To live is to fly Low and high, So shake the dust off of your wings And the sleep out of your eyes; Shake the dust off of your wings And the tears out of your eyes." He is saying he is a mess right now, but he is coming back. So don't cry, because he has chosen the girl he gave this too, but is struggling with his real life. Won't say I love you, babe, Won't say I need you, babe, But I'm gonna get you babe And I will not do you wrong. Living's mostly wasting time And I'll waste my share of mine But it never feels too good, So let's don't take too long. You're soft as glass And I'm a gentle man; He is wasting time with his real life issues, and giving her hope by saying I won't give up because he does need her and love her, he just does not want to say it, to show his pain for having to be away. |

@[GreenGargantua:36208] They are soulmates, she is just scared and he is telling her He will hold onto her and be there when she is ready to be loved. Soulmates. Her love is everything he needs and wants and she thinks she is not enough so he is telling her she is not only enough, but she completes him and is haunted by her fear and her absence and hopes she does not take long to realize it because he will wait forever. |
The Psychedelic Furs – The Ghost In You Lyrics | 3 years ago |
It means he loves her and he does not want her to go away... He is in love with her, and what they have is everything to him. He does not want to lose it, and he wants her with him not distracted by other things and or men because heaven is with her and moments away if she would just be focussed on what they have and the life they share... When she does that his worry of losing her will not haunt him so... A man in my shoes runs a light (I am open to anything) And all the papers lied tonight (He did not realize what he wanted until he found her) But falling over you Is the news of the day (Turns out she is his person his love his other half) Angels fall like rain (he feels heaven raining on him with her) And love is all of heaven away (He wants and needs her but feels he is not worthy of her love) Inside you the time moves (Time flies when with her and slows when without her) And she don't fade The ghost in you She don't fade (when she is not with him her memory is and he worries and misses her and is haunted by not being able to be with her all the time) Inside you the time moves And she don't fade A race is on I'm on your side (he is all in and ready to win her) And hearing you my engines die (He hears her voice and he stops running) I'm in a mood for you (He wants and needs her right now) For running away ( He wants to run away with her) Stars come down in you (heaven falls for her like he does) And love, you can't give it away (He does not want her to give her love to another) Inside you the time moves (Time flies when she is with him and slows down when they are apart) And she don't fade The ghost in you She don't fade (she is in his thoughts all the time and he misses her so much it haunts him) Inside you the time moves And she don't fade "Don't you go It makes no sense" We are happy together just us as we are... we have it all, no need to let things get in the way and or take you away from me> "When all your talking supermen Just take away the time And get in the way" You are letting things get in the way of our happiness Ain't it just like rain Soaks through And love, is only heaven away Focus on us and our love and what we have and it's perfect... Inside you the time moves Time goes by fast when we are together slow when she is not with him And she don't fade The ghost in you She don't fade but she is in his heart and mind part of him |

Did the song lyrics have nothing to do with the Iveys/Badginger? It’s just weird because it seems so meta. Like, you’re a minor band and The Beatles want to sign you and Paul will even give you a free Beatles quality song to give you an instant hit. It’s not hard to see the band thinking/saying that “there must be a catch” because this McCartney fool is just giving them money. |
