Toto – Africa Lyrics 21 years ago
The words are "I bless the rains down in Africa" Trust me, i had to sing this song in concert.

As for racism, I don´t really think this song has anything to do with it. I think its more about a guy that loves this woman, and he´s trying to find some way to tell her that. There´s more, but it will have to wait for another time.

Gaelic Storm – Drink The Night Away Lyrics 21 years ago
Something that Lissa forgets is the darker side to this story. These "all night parties" were actually called "American Wakes." The meaning of the party was that, to the people that stayed behind, a lot of these people were dead. They were losing them, and in a very real sense: there was no phone, the post wasn't nearly what it is today (and, considering that it isn't very good now, thats saying a lot). These people were dying. Hence the line in the song "We'll drink and we'll dance / and we'll drown our sorrow."

Snoop Dogg – Gin and Juice Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, first off, the Country version that we have all come to love was done by a bluegrass band from Texas called "The Gourds" (you can find the information at the Phish FAQ at http://www.phish.net/faq/ginandjuice.html). I'm looking right now for who did the punk cover of the song.
Frankly, I like the bluegrass and punk versions much better than this one. But by far the best out of all of them is the Saturday Night Live "Jack Handy" version of the song. It doesn't do all of it (only up to "so turn off the lights, and close the door"), but it is absolutely hilarious to hear this deep voiced white guy speaking with a very white-bread voice and saying "Shee-it, I got a pocket full of rubbers, and my homeboys do too" and "I got bitches in the living room, gettin' it on" and "Its kinda hard bein' Snoop D-O- double G"

Barenaked Ladies – If I Had A $1000000 Lyrics 21 years ago
Actually, sarahmansour, they do diss other groups, and often. A great majority of their songs were specifically written as a playful jest towards other groups. Look at "New Kid on the Block."

This song seems to take on a rather interesting meaning when they add in the lyrics from Grade Nine, as they did on the "Rock Spectacle" version. Whereas this is pretty much a silly little love song, it becomes something different with all that other stuff. The other stuff points out that it is a silly song, and possibly about that puppy love we all get when we're really young.

This is my favorite band. I can't get enough of them. They can be both serious and funny, and often at the same time. And thats a dying artform.

Warren Zevon – Hit Somebody Lyrics 21 years ago
I like Buddy, too. I still think he dies at the end of the song, though. It says the last thing he saw was the flashing red light, and I think it implies that he saw the flashing red light, and then that heavenly light.

I agree. Zevon is one of the truly great story-tellers in all of singing history. Right up there with Johnny Cash in that department.

The Mamas & the Papas – Creeque Alley Lyrics 21 years ago
Actually elysiarenee, this song is the entire story of the band that sang it. The Mama's and the Papas were one of the most incredible folk rock groups of the 1960's. The band members were Mama Cass, Mama Michelle, Papa John, and Papa Denny. They sang with incredible harmony, and loved what they did.
You are right about Mama Cass dying of a heart attack. Her daughter had a small role in the movie "American Graffitti". John Phillips (Papa John) died just last year. His daughter has a starring role in the Disney Channel show "So Weird".

Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics 21 years ago
The song is actually about Hell. As noted in the "Encyclopedia of Hell" by Miriam Van Scott under the entry for "Album Cover Art", this album was the most successful album to use Hell as a selling point. The idea of the song is that the so-called Hotel California is Hell. The narrator is driving on a highway at the beginning of the song, and is killed by another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction ("Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light / My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim / I had to stop for the night").
He is greeted by a figure that resembles the guide that often accompanies travelers to Hell in many tales (such as the poet Virgil, who accompanied Dante through Hell in "The Divine Comedy"). Eerie voices explain to him that there is "plenty or room at the Hotel California" (a reference to the idea that Hell has no limits to the number of souls it can hold). His guide shows him the grim, morose hotel and it's features (Dancing people that resemble the shades of legend, the eternal wails of people, darkly twisted visions of the rooms at the Hotel, etc.). His guide tells him that everybody in the Hotel is a prisoner of their own device (i.e. they commited some form of sin, and weren't able to gain redemption for it, and, therefore, will forever be a prisoner of Hell).
When he gets to the master chamber, there is a feast but there is no food. All the guests have knives to try and kill the Beast that will not die (either a depiction of Satan, or Cerubus).
In the end, the narrator tries to leave, to "find the passage back to the place I was before." Many depictions of Hell describe such an exit, from which, if you are lucky enough to find and prove to be even luckier in making it through, you will be able to leave Hell, and return to whichever plane you wish to return to. However, our narrator is stopped by the doorman (an allusion to the gatekeeper of Hell that appears in many of the stories, such as the Divine Comedy, and the Aeneid). This doorman, told him to relax (in other words, don't bother trying), because they are only "programmed to receive", and while you can checkout anytime you like, you can still never leave (a reference to the inscription over the Gates of Hell in the Divine Comedy: "Abandon Hope, all ye who enter here"

Shaggy – Angel Lyrics 22 years ago
First, this song is great. It is probably one of my favorite songs made recently. It is a love ballad from a man that doesn't quite know any other way to tell his lover how he feels about her. Similar to the idea behind Jim Croce's "I'll have to say 'I love you' in a Song."
Secondly, this is not a remake of anything. The chorus' structure and tune are the same as the Juice Newton song, but the words, and message, are very different.
Last, nzvamp posted the lyrics wrong. Its not "takin' a beatin'" but "Begged and I pleaded." Not "Can't be a fool," but "Don't be a fool." Not "Girl inspite of my behaviour said I'm your saviour," but "Girl in spite of my behavior, you're my savior." And not "You appear to me so tender," but "You are petting me so tender."

Hootie & the Blowfish – Tootie Lyrics 22 years ago
To me, this song is about a man who broke up with his lover. The dream he talks about where she sat down and said that they were through with each other wasn't a dream, but to the man it feels like a bad nightmare. They each seem to still have love for the other, but they don't feel like they can repair the problems in their relationship ("we just don't have the time").
The song is him trying to tell her that he still loves her, even though she may not understand how or why.
This is one of my favorite songs now. I heard it the day after I broke up with my girlfriend, and I cried because it was exactly how I felt.

Linkin Park – In The End Lyrics 22 years ago
This song means a lot to me. I often feel like the speaker in the lyrics: I try so hard, I get so far, but nobody cares about anything that I do that is important to me. I get used a lot, and people continually treat my like their property. And, while it carries a pretty depressing message at the beginning, by the end of the song the speaker reuses what is bothering him and turns it into a positive central message: "In the end, it doesn't even matter."
