Then he does get her "she walked but she never not away" and then breaks her heart by ignoring her "no he's never going to hear and he ain't going to follow down at the corner of the square". That last line is from Laura's original and not in the Three Dog Night's cover version. A lot of people have tried to add all sorts of deep meanings, (Apollo and Daphne from Greek mythology etc.) but I don't buy that. |

| I think that to say the song is about a car or the song is about a stripper is too broad of a definition for what actually goes into writing a song. Panama is also a play on words. Of course Roth isnt going to say that in a publc interview. That would instantly diminish the coolness and mystique of the play on words forever, and what singer does that to their songs? We know this writing tactic by VH in albums like OU812, and so many other word plays in their lyrics that escape me right now. But the real clue is that everything he says about the “car” leads up to “don’t you know she’s coming home with me, you’ll lose her in the turn. I’ll get her” So here leads intom the chorus, and in this context, what does Panama really mean when you factor in the play on words? And maybe there IS a car called “Panama” But what makes this particular car worthy of a song? When I was a little kid I probably thought “Panama” was about the canal or the country. In fact I probably didn’t care what it meant, because at that age i just figured rock stars sang whatever they wanted whether it made sense or not. It wasn’t until I got a little older and understood the song’s lyrics, and VH’s word tricks a little better that I realized that “Panama’ wasn’t about Panama. Its was just about your ma. lol | |

I have been listening to and loving this song for over 45 years. It's one of my favorites and definitely a fun sing-along. I was recently commenting to my daughter that like many Doobie Brothers songs, I couldn't come up with a single unifying meaning and rationale that could tie the whole thing together and make sense. Yes, the refrain is magnificent but what does that have to do with trains? She hadn't heard the song except snippets here and there so I cranked it up and played all the way through. i think the political message in this song takes way more importance over the part about a relationship. the most poignant line of the song the system gives you just enough to make you think that you see change they'll sing you right to sleep and then they'll screw you just the same is super amazing and so right on. tokens, we put people of 'color' in power, or women and say look things are different. but it's not about having a black president or having a women president, it's about changing our consciousness, about realizing we've been raised only to divide. it's about realizing that we think things have changed but really we're even more deeply rooted in our cycle of hatred and discrimination. and i think the whole waiting part of the song--the whole relationship part--kind of just shows the dedication these two people have to the cause, thus making it more important than their relationship. which i think is like the ultimate message. we need to step outside ourselves, make sacrifices if we want to see change. |
