Just basing it off of an event in my own life, I perceive it as Jesus talking to someone and trying to give them strength. "Feel the light of your eyes find a way through the darkness tonight, fearing no one". I won't get into the complexity of my own beliefs here, but I pretty much considered myself a Satanist until about a week ago. It's a long story, but something happened that really proved to me that Jesus is really watching and doing what he can where he can. I feel like it's supposed to be Jesus saying...

I feel like it's supposed to be Jesus saying in the song that if you've got a lot of darkness, he knows that there is light in there, and he wants you to use it to rise up above the darkness. "Do you really think I covet like you do?" He's saying that a lot of people usually go down dark paths to get something that they want. He's saying he wasn't, and isn't somebody who required any certain thing to be happy. "Am I precious to you now?" Something happens that really does shed a light to show you that he's there. He's able to channel something miraculous into your life in a time or need to let you see the light cut through that darkness and realize that he can sometimes give you a hand if you believe and let him. Then, my favorite part of the entire song. "I cannot stop this pure emotion falling from my eyes. You are vindicating, liberating saviors of my soul." I believe it could be from the perspective of Jesus as he sheds tears of joy as a result of seeing people pushing the darkness out of their hearts and letting him in so that he can help guide them to a better future. He refers to them as a saviors of his soul, as he feels like his sacrifice is being made more and more worth it as more people find his light.
Cornell the Visionary. Chris saw the future, he knew America would arrive at the point we are here in 2024. Our rightful past, present and future president... the amazing and immortal Donald J Trump will lead us back to greatness and the point to which the treacherous and lecherous Buyden has driven us too is the straw that broke the back... SETTING OFF the destruction of the psychotic "progressive liberals" and their unholy alliance with demons of depravity. Set if Off brothers, we're ready to reclaim our nation.

I think that this is about a sort of growing up, (In the beginning,we all start as a tiny seed, then a tender sprout With water, light and the hope of love, We grow up towards the skies above)

This is paired with plant life aspects, in my opinion, to compare coming of age as a human and the need to claim a life for yourself with the natural order and entropy of the universe (plants retaking a city).

This is a wonderful and deep song despite how short it is and how few lyrics there are. (:

I think it’s generally about the court of public opinion — be it talk shows on TV, social media on the internet, etc. It was a bit prescient in that respect because these days, it really is hard to hold people’s interest for very long with “pixels and sound”, so we have to resort to more and more shocking content to grab that fleeting attention.

I don’t care what it’s about.

It makes me think of my dad every time I hear it.

Anyone else think this song is about religion? The swallow the meaning of life part and there’s no right and wrong way kind of remind me of my time going to catholic school. I could be wrong and it might be generic authority although religion is def a form of authority so it applies to them too.

Wow, so many comments. I've always loved this song, had it on a CD mix back in the day. It just came up on my Apple Music and was looking at the lyrics, and this particular part really hits home with me:

Cold silence has A tendency to Atrophy any Sense of compassion Between supposed lovers

I went through a tough breakup (all breakups are tough for me) a couple of years ago, and these lyrics are a perfect fit for my feelings about it. To this day, I hate her and I will always feel that way. Mostly because of the "cold silence" from her. And that cold silence totally eroded any "sense of compassion" I felt for her for anything i might have done wrong. And with just the power of the song, and how good it is, I feel it even more. Love it.

I agree it's about us figuring things out, and really matches what an earlier responder said about Karl's intentions when writing the song, but even moreso, I get the sense it's about us messing everything up. We've fouled up this gorgeous planet that we were lucky enough to "inherit," and now we want to go to the moon and try to make things right but we'll just mess that (and space) up too! Think of all the junk in space - satellites, etc. We can't keep ourselves from messing up a good, pure thing. We think we know and understand...

Think of all the junk in space - satellites, etc. We can't keep ourselves from messing up a good, pure thing. We think we know and understand so much - well, we TRY to understand, and we often do get there (we know more about lots of things than in the days before science and before they could just sit and think) - but that understanding somehow doesn't stop us from fouling the water and the air and killing each other and never seeming to learn or get any better as a whole. I just love this song, and I know Karl Wallinger was very earth-concious, very concerned about the planet, so this interpretation is the one I've always had and continue to think fits the song.
I think they mean business. This is neither cute nor to be taken lightly.
