This is how I perceive the song through the lens of my experiences. When I heard this song again today it so clearly resembled my experience with a past abusive ex. There was a lot of lies, manipulation, and gaslighting - to the point of me feeling crazy. It's been years trying to put it all to rest, and have some closure.

If you strip away the overtly romantic context, this is my ethos in life. If I can help those around me whom I love to ease their burdens and remember the beauty and joy of life, I will 馃挋馃挋.

Putting the past and all of the bad things you used to do to each other in the past where they belong. Starting new and doing things right this time around.

If you've come this far, it's because you're probably suffering from the struggles we all deal with in our lives. Whether it's alcohol and drugs like Stevie. Whether it's the struggle of relationships. Whether it's mental and emotional turmoil within your own mind. Like he said, it's all based on fear. Once you tear down that wall of denial in your life and let the truth of whatever it is that is holding you back no longer have control, you begin to break the cycle of madness that consumes you . The threads in the veil of darkness fall away...

Song is about heavy drug abuse, and how every time the main character stops, the drugs "beg him" to come back. "I got what was / I want to take what's left," the main character wants to take all of the drugs he has at once, so he takes a lot The main character is hypnotized by taking so much drugs, his "beautiful senses are gone," and the drugs keep calling him back, "Canary in a gilded cage / Singin' / Sweet, soft and low / I will poison you all / Come closer, racin' to your tongue," the main character listened...

Obviously about people doing cocaine, because battery acid is in cocaine.

I think this song is describing the perils of being a wanderer. Dion is Christian and has some quite conservative beliefs, amongst them are that casual relationships bring pain to both parties.

The wanderer with his "two fists of iron" suggests he possesses great strength and control, but also he's clenched in fear/anger? He's going nowhere, the repetition on around around around... suggests it's tedius for him. And he could fall for girls, but a barely thought through compulsion making him "hop right into that car".

I think it's about the police. We want them around to make society better, but they often make things worse. They promise they won't destroy us, and yet their actions say otherwise. The chorus puts me in mind of the military / police using force against civilians. "Pa pa" is the sound of a gun, therefore "pa pa power" is power asserted through violence and fear.
