In his memoir Never Surrender, Biff Byford said this song is about the voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers. The press didn't like it (perhaps because they didn't understand it); The Pilgrim Fathers, also known as the Pilgrims, were the English settlers who traveled to America on the Mayflower in the early 17th century and established the Plymouth Colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

It's about celebrity worship, which seems to be worse than ever

I don't understand how he (Clapton) could be making these death threats to some guy in light of the fact that he, himself (years earlier) stole the wife of George Harrison (who was his best friend at the time), Patti Boyd. This really seems very hypocritical to me.

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Eric Clapton. But this really gives me cause for concern. It's kind of like the Stones' song, 'Sympathy for the Devil'. That was a song that should never have been either written or recorded by ANYONE. Let alone the Stones ----- who could arguably have been considered the best rock band of all time ---- had it not been for that piece of garbage.
This one is more in your face, the song is basically someone thinking about their past relationship with the biggest mistake they ever made in their life. A big FUCK YOU to a bitch ass mother fucker liiiiike, this reminds me of a group of assholes I knew tbh LMAO. I guess you can take this both romantically and or platonically, pick your posion~

A relationship that ended due to the main protag doing someting that their ex lover wasn't happy about. The protag is torn apart and is deeply missing thier ex lover, knowing and also feeling like it was their fault. Saying that they could scream in their face about how it was them that ruined the relationship, hoping and wishing that their ex wouln't hate them anymore. The protag, in a deeply depressed state, thinks that maybe if they weren't alive anymore they wouldn't hate them. To reason with this thought, they say that they hope their friends move on too,...

And ya that's kind of it, pretty sad but fucking amazing. I'll cry to this song any day PERIOD!
I feel like this song is about deeply missing someone that they once knew, yearning for this person to the point that they are gripped with anxiety. Begging for this person to ease their mind and calm their heart. Give them a sense of purpose and meaning.

In the first verse(and rest of the song), the narrator is talking about he has left the island of Chandeleur(not chandelier, as that doesn't make sense, and Chandeleur is in the gulf of Mexico, which is in a similar region to Texas) and working some temporary job make sure he has money(Second verse) "I got a job as a public relations man Passing out handbills on Austin Street Merely an effort to improve my financial situation" This man is trying to catch or tame the thunderbird. What does he mean when he says thunderbird? Well in Texas, there was a myth about a giant bird, which could control the weather and would rip it pray from limb to limb with its massive talons. It also would make thunderstorms when hunted(kisselpaso.com/the-legend-unique-formation-of-el-pasos-thunderbird-mountain/.) The narrator has returned to whatever town this interaction takes place in, in order to continue his quest to catch the bird(It might have caused a death or injured someone he knows, or himself. Also the fact that he has a bad financial situation, means it he kills it he may get a reward) ,or tame it(He might want to have the power of controlling the weather.)
On the title track, bassist Steve Dawson said that "In England, there's a paper called the Daily Express, and on the logo at the top of the paper, there's a crusader, and there was a car made by Ford called a Cortina Crusader. That's what started it off. We just liked the name "Crusader". We didn't have any connotations of what it meant as far as history goes, but we just liked the name "Crusader", so we just wrote the lyrics to fit the title, really." "It's what we used to learn at school," Biff Byford added "We used to read about the Crusades back in the day, Richard the Lionheart, and all these figures that obviously weren't as fantastic as people make out they are. It's a song written from a young boy's point of view, watching the knights and soldiers leave for a crusade, basically. And that's what it's about. It's a third-person song, and he wants to go with the knights and his father or his uncles who are going off to the crusade, and he can't because he's too young. That's the idea behind the song." The Saracen mentioned are the Muslims the Crusaders fought to take revenge. Biff Byford also stated he wasn't trying to make a religious statement in this song. "It's not anti-anybody or pro-anybody. It's just a boy watching the crusaders go off to war," he said. Growing up in England and learning its history, Byford learned of the violent struggle of its past. "England's history is full of wars and invasions. You know, the Romans, the Vikings. Our whole history revolves around combat, and I suppose as a boy when you read about war and the Crusades and the Vikings, it all seems to be good Boy Scout stuff. I suppose in reality, it was absolutely brutal and bloody, and billions of people died, but when you're a boy and you're listening and reading and watching these films, it's all a bit glorified and it's all a bit marching off to war."
