I have been the person about which people are warned. Girls have actually been told (by my friends, none-the-less) not to get involved with me. I am fun to be with, but there is no future with me. I am caring and compassionate, but not commitment material.

I don't mean to be that guy... I just am.

I like the song, even if it makes me feel like the person I apparently am.

    the pre-chorus sounds more like:

"but patience pounds on the time that i stole
you were meant to be mine
i draw a duel with the cards of the gods
that were played in fated time"

and verse 2 sounds more like:

    "sky whispers in a baritone
that the mystery always beats what i am shown
search the the dial for what i need to know
they don't play the songs on my radio"

love this song! it seems to be about her wanting to reunite with an estranged family member.

"i have been informed you could be the death of me":
people close to her warn her not to get too wrapped up in this person, because she could end up being let down.

"but patience pounds on the time that i stole / you were meant to be mine":
she's trying hard to be patient.

"i draw a duel with the cards of the gods / that were played in fated time":
she's taking a gamble, but she knows they'll end up seeing each other again.

"sky whispers in a baritone / that the mystery always beats what i am shown":
she's warned that not knowing the person's better than knowing. kinda like the saying "never meet your heroes."

"search the the dial for what i need to know / they don't play the songs on my radio":
she tries to find the answer in music, but can't.

This song is about the reunion between two former lovers.

The first part of the song has her relating her first memories of the lucky Guy. While she knows this person is trouble for her (she loves him too much? ["I have been informed you could be the death of me]). But she still loves him... even though he has moved on.

["But patience bounds an eternal stone
You were meant to be mine..."] - To me this is her saying that she will wait, has fantastic patience, for the two of them to meet again and re-kindle.

The second half of the song has her showing she understands that things may not and perhaps could not have worked.

    ["Sky whispers in a baritone
that the mystery always beats what I am shown"] - We all know this one. Sometimes the fantasy is better than the reality. She likes the mystery. Perhaps this is what she really loves. Perhaps the relationship could not actuqally work.

["search the the dial for what i need to know
they don't play those songs on my radio"] - Easy enough. We all want to hear songs to relate to and perhaps grab some advice from. But few songs can tell you how to cope with this... and they are hard to find.

All in all? A song about two people getting back together or the hope of getting back together and the feelings that result.

    GREAT song.

I really don't think this song is about a long lost family member. At all. She simply compares foreseeing their first encounter to a "ghost story from a family tree that was handed down to [her]." Plus, it would be kind of creepy to be repeating "you were meant to be mine" and "I know we'll meet again, maybe tonight" to a random family member. To me, this song is about a guy she met once who beamed with mystery - which is why she would compare their encounter to a ghost story. Mystery that entrances and draws you in a desire to know the unknown. But like with many relationships not all can last, and she seems to acknowledge that by referring to him as a "siren song," a warning for what would become of a relationship between the two of them. Despite having "been informed" that he "could be the death of [her]", she rebuts that "patience" in waiting for him "pounds on the time that [she stole]" with him since he is "meant to be [hers]." Referring back to mystery and the acknowledgment that not all relationships can last, she admits that "the sky whispers in a baritone that the mystery always beats what [she] is shown." It's fitting too that the sky whispers in a baritone, and baritone is the most common male voice - common being juxtaposed to the mystery that will soon diminish when she does see him again. Despite knowing that, mystery still entices her to know and "see [him] again, maybe tonight."

The song also has a sort of adorable feel to it. Like a little girl in a big house (similar to the idea she utilized when creating The Way It Is video). She's been warned, she knows they won't work, she'll likely be disappointed as mystery is often more alluring than reality, but we all still want to understand the mystery. She's so hopeful with the "maybe tonight" idea, like a little girl wishing on a star and really believing it will happen ("i KNOW we'll meet again"), as it fate exists. She insists, after what was clearly a brief encounter considering all this mystery remains, that "you were meant to be mine." And again, that idea is completely juxtaposed against the very sophisticated styling and syntax of the lyrics.
