Hot Breakfast! is a dork-rock duo from Delaware. After performing separately in various bands and together in living rooms and the occasional bar, Jill Knapp (vocals, percussion) and Matt Casarino (guitar, vocals, other things) officially became Hot Breakfast! in 2010.
They built a following playing venues in Delaware and Philadelphia, often in support of The Joe Trainor Trio. Because they took a hard-rock approach to acoustic music, they found they were as comfortable playing at rock clubs as they were coffeehouses, and often shared the bill with rock and punk bands. Their offbeat and often comedic approach to music, highly energetic stage shows, and unmistakably dorky demeanor earned them the unofficial title of “Delaware’s Premier Acoustic Dork-Rock Power Duo.”
In 2012, Hot Breakfast! released their self-titled EP, which would go on to win Best EP at the 2013 93.7 WSTW Hometown Heroes “Homey” Awards. The self-recorded EP contained four originals, including early versions of “It Only Takes Two to Rock,” “Defender,” and “Hole in Your Pants," and covers of Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom” and Violent Femmes’ “Kiss Off.” Later pressings of the EP also contained their single “An Idiot for Christmas,” which has been included on a few Christmas compilation CDs.
After taking home another Homey Award for Best Lead Singer, Hot Breakfast! released their first full-length album, 39 Summers, to a sold-out house at World Café Live at the Queen on May 18, 2013. The album was produced by Ritchie Rubini and Matt and Jill, and recorded at Studio 825 and the band's own Knappshack Studio. With several songs utilizing a full band while Matt and Jill played multiple instruments, the 12 originals on 39 Summers run the gamut of styles, from hard rock to power-pop to acoustic folk to electronica. Several songs, including “Underground,” “Defender,” “Act Surprised,” “We Are Not Cool,” and “Hole in Your Pants” started getting in rotation on local and internet radio stations, including Graffiti Radio, Y-Not Radio, and Radio NCB (North Cornwall, UK). In September of 2013, their song “Underground” debuted on SiriusXM’s Little Steven’s Underground Garage.
