Lyric discussion by Robert71

Today is 2023JUNE23, Saturday. I consider myself a big fan of DCD. I came to this website in hopes of understanding the lyrics better, but there’s nothing definitive, nothing like I hoped here. Nevertheless, I’m compelled to share my thoughts with, well, you. Sup?

This rhythmic song makes me imagine a combat-worn soldier from centuries ago, walking back home alone through mountainous terrain. (There is no real person named “John Francis Dooley,” according to my brief, superficial search online, by the way.) I mean, like the song name, I have that sort of imagery floating in my head, like in the classic Ulysses story.

When the bigger, orchestral strings come in those two times during the song, in a chorus-like way, it really captures me. That’s kinda the best part, in my opinion.

I was also hoping to find if there are any lyrics/words for the first vocalist. It’s fairly creepy. My wife instantly thought the same thing when I shared it with her earlier today, with the exception that she, with a frantic countenance, also thought that it could be satanic. But I accept it as a “scatting vocalization” that has no literal meaning, and no real purpose other than to create a moody tension and some musical contrast to the lead singer! I told my wife I think it has a place in a soundtrack of a suspenseful movie.

I wonder how many years will pass before somebody reads MY Cincinnati comment? haha Thank you for reading! Have a great day!
