A struggle with depression and an existential crisis. "I fought the fear and chased the pain" could be a reference to it. fighting the fear is courage, but to face what, exactly? To chase the pain means to subject oneself to whatever must be endured to face the enemy. He goes on to say he is on an island-possibly referencing Simon and Garfunkel's 'I am a rock' the protagonist in that song refers to the pain caused by interaction with the world. He goes on to refer to the waters that can take him far away. Does this mean to run away to sea or to drown oneself? His hero's journey is to serve others that need him, and in the process come to know himself. Towards the end, recovery is in sight, when he realises knowing himself is the answer. This does not purport to be a definitive answer, but rather a catalyst for debate-there must be and interview somewhere. I also suggest listening to Mr. Mister's 'Kyrie Elieson' and Simon and Garfunkel's 'I am a Rock' in conjunction with this song.
