I’ve always heard it as “Out beyond the pull of the past”, as in having swam out beyond the pull of the tide, or riptide. The tide and the past being analogous, as both are something that can keep us stuck, and unable to reach the future, or the shore. “Out beyond the pull of the past, just before the future comes.”
