Pretty sure this song is about him singing to his daughter, to whom he is very close. He is singing from the perspective of a young struggling artist (700 places, 700 faces - endless shows, no crowd, save maybe a bartender...bright lights on a weekday - again, no crowd, not a big enough draw to get a weekend show). He misses his daughter, and fears she is growing up without him. She rolls her yes, like kids do to parents and parents do to kids - hence "back of you eyes look like my mothers" - but they are close and as she grows, they become friends "when we talk you're like my brother." Finally, he sings, "how could I miss you to another guy" - meaning she has grown up and married off. This is all very obvious stuff - but whatever message others hear is valid if it makes a connection for them.
