To me this sounds like a toxic one sides relationship. Especially with how evocative the music is, I think the narrator loved someone with everything and tried to be everything the one he loved wanted but couldn't "I couldn't even take you home" "I couldn't play that role" it sounds like he knows he did everything right within the relationship "I was your father, son, Holy Ghost and priest" but just wasn't enough for this person, "I didn't see much happiness or pain" nothing he could do could get the reaction he wanted. Being loving him in the same way he loved her. Now this could be complete projection on my part.
