Lyric discussion by aurora1020

Got a few different meanings from this song. Not sure how it would portray to Maynard's actual life - he is well known for writing about personal issues.

My take is that his upbringing was very structured and disciplined - step out of line and you will be smacked around. He went to a military academy and had very religious parents. Conservative upbringing reminiscent of older days.

He then turns to talk to someone rather than in the third person at the beginning of the song. The explanation is that the person who is being referred to (you) hasn't experienced the same issues when living with the people who are condescending and forceful in a physical sense. This person simply does not understand what is going on, and I'm assuming that they are being condescending or speaking with a severe lack of experience similar to how the "parents" of the song are portrayed as. A "remedy" is proposed - to subject (you) to the same kind of shit that he went through.

Another viewpoint was that someone was overstaying their welcome. This was suggested to me by someone else in the room.

Another interpretation that I think this song is conveying - there is always someone bigger. No matter how tough you appear, how threatening you seem, or how much you puff up your chest, theres going to be someone else that will knock you the fuck on out. MJK is known for his sarcastic tones, double-entendres, and facetious lyrics.

@aurora1020 are you retarded? Maynard didn't write the song but you posted a huge RANT on how the lyrics are so personable to him! Sure, they may have resonated with him but you're writing your post as if he constructed the words. Do some fucking research in the future and think before posting ffs!

@Gfyic EVEN IF wikipedia is wrong about who wrote the songs, Maynard seems to agree with the meaning by putting people through hardship  rollingstone.com/music/music-news/tools-maynard-james-keenan-on-climate-change-ac-dc-puscifers-new-lp-56276/
