This song has a double meaning to me.

The verses are about how words are powerful weapons, and can change all of history for the good or bad. (Hitler comes to mind when it says "...and watch whole nations stand up.")

The second meaning, in the chorus, is that Christianity is like an "untraveled road." Nobody listens to us ("when we scream, our lips don't make a sound."), and there are few people who truly follow Christ. The Bible even talks about how the Christian walk is the "long, narrow road." It even says, "Wide is the road that leads to destruction (hell) and many find it, but narrow is the road that leads to eternal life (heaven)."
