Lyric discussion by Dudi

"Your funeral my trial" is one of the earlier songs written and performed by Cave on a subject that he is not unfamiliar with, even on the recent masterpieces that he & bad seeds have delivered - Push the Sky Away (2013) & Dig, Lazarus, Dig (2008).

  • The song is about "an encounter" or having to spend a night with a girl (or to be more specific a prostitute) and the aftermath of this encounter that stays with the man, but is long forgotten by the girl, because of you know, her profession. Nick has chosen this words to describe this event and with the words "Your funeral my trial" he expresses that for the girl it's a funeral, because after they are through having sex, she dies for him,, probably he will never see her again, and that's when his "trial" begins, he judges himself about all what occurred the night before. He was young when he wrote this, and you can dig in the lyrics that he has his moral grounds to deal with after what happened the other night.

You can find this kind of misery expressed even in masterpieces such as "Jubilee Street" (Push the Sky Away) & one truly underrated song such as Midnight Man (Dig, Lazarus, Dig).
