This is the first song that I heard from Pepper, and at first I didn't really care for it as much as I do now. The previous song that was my number one was "Bring Me Along." Then one night when I was on the path of never waking up the next morning, this song care on. When I heard it, for what I thought was going to be my last, the song became clear to me. My interpretation of this song was visualizing Kaleo as a little child, who's adolescent parents "unfortunately" had a child who were unprepared both mentally and financially. Which brings me to the point of the first verse which states, " Rent to the Landlord baby, that's his business..." Which would mean that there was a question that generated this answer. Which would mean that Kaleo would have asked his parents " where is the money going?" Of course his parents did not want to hell him that the truth of why they were alway short on money, but the truth of the matter is that the baby was where all the money was going. So his parents would come up with these excuses to turn him away from the truth like it was the electric, or rent that cost so much money. Which with all the frustration that the parents were going through they all would argue and fight including the now grown teen child. Now that Kaleo is all grown up saying, " slip to the bottom of my empty pockets.." realizing that living in this world is hard, having to work hard like his parents. So this song is set out to let his parents know that he understands that whatever fighting or lying that happen was to protect him in the long run. "How could I ever thank you, My girl" meaning you will always be my mom no matter what happened andi could never do what you did. Of course his ma is telling him to be electric, setting goals, and achieving greatness, Music and singing. This is what I thought the song was trying to get out to the public, as right now my mom and I do not have a great relationship. Growing up poor with a lot of brothers with parents that could barely scrap by. I do understand like Kaleo does
