To me this song comes across as the need to connect with a loved one ... someone to hold you in your time of need.
I get the impression the whole album that this track appears on is relating to an impending "death", and I think that this song ties into that by being that glimpse of last hope (or at least holding onto life for that bit longer ... their protection be it from death).
