Lyric discussion by MeredithGrey

To me this song is about a girl named Closer (how it is sang in the chorus) that seems to be very indifferent towards the pain and sadness of people that are struggling (even in a very young age) and they have to make their own way through life with their own fists (Kyla sings about them in the verses). Closer judges those people for being different, for having their own world (there's a lyric saying "she/he could fly" which to me symbolizes that although they're damaged in some way, they still have something special about them, something that makes them who they are). She doesn't really care what stories are behind their actions and behaviour. In the bridge there’s some sort of a promise that says “And one day they will need you/ But you won’t need them then/ And one day they will love you/ But they are not your friends” which means that the position you’re in now doesn’t have to last forever and better times are about to come. And the people who were putting them down will suddenly be looking up to them.
