First of all this is an awesome tune! On my all time best list. I love the ethereal feel. I like to think it could be about a Christian Crusader or Viking setting out to sea having just ended a relationship (not uncommon behavior in those days/sometimes it was demanded of the missionary to totally devote oneself to God and leave behind all personal relations in order to focus on the mission). The sadness one might feel after his gutwrenching decision. Choosing to be a part of a greater movement in expanding his faith to other parts of the globe (or for the Viking, going to war in order to earn a living which comes natural to him, a man with barbarian blood running through his veins). Sagres Point is a southwestern Portuguese remote promontory with a Castle on it and many menhirs (Stonehenge-like rocks/religious symbols) that has been used for religious purposes since neolithic times. It can be very difficult to reach, due to wind swept waves leading to many shipwrecks (experienced captains would wait on the lee side until the winds were calm before going around the point and out to sea). The singer, Kristian Matsson (Swedish), most likely is a history buff of his own peoples and drew some parallells between a man giving up and leaving behind something in order to answer to his preternatural being to be free, not tied down, and the consequences (regret, doubt, loneliness) he feels on his long and sometimes treacherous journeys at sea and in life. In summary: a loosely drawn parallel of a relationship he destroyed due to his wanderlust and the consequences of his nature. His feelings that it may be in his viking nature to be a Rolling Stone and his hope to maybe change this fact. Who knows?.
